Hey there, I'm a new poster to this site, but have been familiar for a half year or so. I LOVE all the art on this site, it drives me nuts! :D I have somewhat "similar" drawings, but they're all on sketch paper and it's a pain to scan them cause my scanners resolution sucks... SO I've been doing all of these doodles in PS and I thought I'd finally contribute to the daily sketch group :)

I know it's not the "concept" art like everyone else's work here, but it still illistates the idea!

P.S. Can anyone give me directions on how to post my images differently on the forums?

Lol, I originally missed the whole human head thing and just drew a dinosaur fighting a squid. Here is the link if anyone wants to see it.

And here is my finished sketch. I spent about 30 minutes on it. Any crits would be greatly appreciated.

Wiggles- welcome to the dsg! And I think your image is certainly conceptual, that is what "illustrating the idea" means I think.

Akvarell- That is HI larious! nice colors too

Okay, this topic totally set my inner nerd off, and also I got work so my submissions after this one will be simple stuff. So I put in a little more. (the dino is a Hagryphus)

Great Piece(s) silentbrain. I'm loving every aspect of them.

Looks like the majority by far has positioned the dino as the deserving winner of the battle!

I'm liking your style and depiction of the subject Tommoy. Something playful and fun about the impending doom of your dinosaur.

I've done a little theme linking with the 'outlet' of the weapon being human face shaped.

The dino worked out pretty well but then I had no ideas on how to draw the squid, so instead of fighting they came out like this hahah ^^;

oh and SilentBrain- very nice pieces. what program do you use? I'm new to the digital painting thing, just trying to figure out which program has the most bang for its buck

I again try to say something about other's pictures, despite being a very beginner...

Naastika: good pose on the dinosaur :)

Zaelzar: well, the expression isn't fit for fight, I think. or maybe he wants to hipnotize its opponent? oh no, I see, he's smirking, right? it's a bit unclear... and with this tight-cropping the dinosaur figure seems to be unbalanced, in an unsteady position. with his other legs and his tail it may be better, but now it's a bit.. floating? and just doesn't enough dinamic.
I like the squid, though. I would like to see more of it, but this crop is okay, too.
sorry if I was too harsh or anything, but I was the type of pic I felt I may have some points... and you asked for this... take this with a grain of salt.

silentbrain: its georgous colors makes this pic heroic, no way for some silly animal fight... and it shows that squids are actually really beautiful creatures :)

Tommoy: I like the angle. funny =)

Maaiker: oh, yes, it _can_ be a beginning of a fight. maybe this squid is a very cunning bastard... though now it seems to be really cute ;)

silentbrain: Love the dino half. Very dynamic and great lighting

Tommy: Nice stageing

Johnn: Like the concept for the head.

OK, call me lazy... My dinosaur didn't really pan out, so I added some dinosaur-shaped blobs of lights. Perhaps the dinosaurs are flourescent and attract their prey with the light given off. Fill in the blank. Painted with a hard-edged brush at low opacity in about an hour and 15 min.

Neat sketches everyone!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have nightmares about human-faced dinosaurs from now on, but it was still fun to do.

EBrown- Looks like you know a fair bit about painting already! I dig your color choices.

I use photoshop, but that is my preference since I like the adjustment layers and other photo editing tools. But it does lack some of painters features, like the ability to rotate the canvas freely and a nicer, more realistic brush engine. I'm not sure how one finds their ideal program, maybe one just falls into it?

Silentbrain- Well man I loved your color choices and what you can do. Well done. Do you use custom brushes?

Only a quicky. I tried starting in grayscale then adding a Colour layer later as I think I may be distracting myself when I should be concentrating on composition(trying to run before I can walk sort of thing). What does everyone else do?

I think my perspective may be a bit off, do you get that the squid is very far away and VERY big?

Silentbrain: That is just epic work there, you inspire me.

EBrown
February 20th, 2008, 09:14 AM
uncannyvalley- I do get the impression that the squid is much larger with your perspective coloring, but i think the colors need to be adjusted for it to look further away. maybe some atmospheric perspective (using the hue of your sky) so there's some bluing on the squid and refine the detail on the foreground character so that he appears closer

uncannyvalley
February 20th, 2008, 12:43 PM
Thanks EBrown. I added a bit more texture to the foreground character and used some pink from the sky on the squid. I think it looks much better, thanks again for the tips.

OK. I had some more time at work today. Instead of replacing the dinosaur head with a human head I made a portrait tattoo, This way I get to draw both heads!
