View Full Version : Ed Roth-esque hot rod
Swedish Chef
September 22nd, 2003, 11:51 PM
This is my latest assignment for my illustration class. We had to pick a charity organization and create an 11"x17" piece to promote it. I chose to do "Meals On Wheels" in the style of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. I bought a couple hot rod magazines for reference on the engines and stuff, and checked out a lot of Roth's pieces to get a feel for his style. Then I watched Beavis and Butthead Do America for the monster guy. :)
C&C most welcome and appreciated. It's not due until Wednesday, so I still have some time to touch it up.

this feels a little too similair to me. from the album art for American Made Music to Strip By by Rob Zombie:

Rob was the one who did the animation in the Beavis and Butthead movie.

Problem with this style of art is its all so much alike that it all looks like rips. Its not original, nor creative. Rat Fink style art has been around forvever, and personally I feel that it is too similar to alot of it, and it has no originality to it. Kudos to nil for pointing it out to us. And in fact that piece looks very similar to one that Big Daddy Roth did himself.

well he said he drew it purposely in that kinda style... he obviously used that pic as a reference... but he has a different car design, different monster design, and a different pose... only thing stolen in my opinion is the style (good job by the way Swedish Chef) and the 8-ball shifter.

the wheels are in the exact same position/perspective only flipped in the horizontal.

I know Zombie did the Beavis and Butthead sequence in the movie. I didn't trace or anything, I just looked at a lot of Roth's pieces, got the feel for how he drew the hot rods and monsters, then I threw in a little Rob Zombie influence (to keep it from totally being Rothy). Honestly, I hadn't seen that image from American Made Music To Strip To. A lot of the hot rod art has the front two wheels in a similar position (and has the high 8-ball shifter), which is why I did them like that.
I mean, I know it's sort of a generic Ed Roth looking piece, but we're going to TRY to send them to the charities and see if they'd like to use it. I doubt Meals On Wheels would like a monster in one of their ads, but you never know. That's why I didn't go TOO weird or scary with him. If i was just doing it for myself, I probably would have made him a Frankenstein monster. :p

Rob Zombies pic the front wheels are pointing inwards. Not the exact same as Swedish Chef. I don't think this is a rip. Is it heavily inspired, yes.

I would agree that this isn't a rip, just heavily influenced. Chef acknowledges his influences and so let's move on :)
Not much to say, other than it could use some more kinetic linework to snazz it up a bit, and if I ever have need of Meals on Wheels, I hope to sweet God, that guy doesn't bring it to me :)

That's kinda crazy. "He ripped the design". It is a style so all of the drawings of that style look the same.
Anyone ever wonder where the idea for the style came from? Roth did not make it up, he drew what he saw.
Replace the gear shift with a wang. Facial expression look familiar now? That is how people who play with their wang too much look after about 10 or so years.
It also affects people psychologically, the playing too much part. These people get the urge to be macho and do things like drive hotrods. Roth was making fun of racers without them knowing it.

I thought that monster looked awfully Zombie-ish. Pretty cool. I'd have tried to change it up more, but hey, it's a cool tribute to the style. :)
BTW, on a completely random note, where can I get some goggles like Swedish Chef has in his picture. I need to get some cool industrial looking aviator goggles. :o

Yikes, some folks' trigger fingers are a little itchy.....
Swedish Chef: Go for it man! Don't worry about people who are a little to eager to accuse people of stealing.

fukifino- I got those goggles at Restoration Hardware. I think they were $19.95. Which is pretty cheap considering some of the expensive crap they have in that store.
MGH- No big deal. I know I didn't steal it, so they can throw all the stones they want.
HEXXXER- I like the coffin look you have working on the back of the car. I'm actually putting in some purple drapes on the window in my bedroom, and my bass guitar case is shaped like a coffin (with a red velvety interior). Coffinz rock! :)
