See if you can break your drawings down into more shapes. The shapes that you have seem to lack the "locked together" feel. They're very very clean drawings though and that is good. Also, maybe try to vary your line weight. They have a cartoony look to them with the same line weight everywhere. Not that that's bad, it's just the way it happens to be. Anyway, keep up the good work! Pce.

This took way too long. I think 4 hours. Spent most of that getting the proportions and angles right. Didnt even get to the head and other arm.

I think for where it looks like your at, you shouldn't just ignore the heads on the figures. start with the head and work your way down the figure, and make sure everything else is in realationship to that head. That might help with your proportions. I think as far as your shadows go, don't add them on until the figure itself is solidly constructed and proportiional. The figure is the foundation, and shadows don't mean anything on top of a weak foundation. Shadows are the fun stuff, but see if you can hold back on them. then once you do shadows, you need to consider edges. On all the figures you posted so far, all the edges seems really cut out and don't act accordingly to the anatomy underneath the shadows. Really pay close attention to those edges. It either has to be hard, firm, soft or lost. Edges are easily the hardest thing in drawing and painting, so don't worry so much, but know they are very important. Hope that helps a little.

Watch out for those blue lines that iffy did over your drawing. Those lines aren't going with the form. None of the back muscles go straight down like that. So just be carefull what you take from that. On your last post it looks like your having a hard time with anatomy. So the best thing to do about that is, is to not think about it. Until you go and get the antomical knowledge from books and studying anatomy all by itself, your gonna have to be a slave to what you see. So just draw what you see and don't worry about all the muscles, just look for shapes. And like i said before, it would probably be best to stay away from tone altogether until you can keep proportion and structure consistent.

Teacher showed me a quick way to indicate in the features. It looks sort of like a man though.

October 11th, 2003, 09:22 AM
Now we're getting somewhere! These last few are a dramatic improvement in terms of structure.

The reason that last one looks like a man is less a matter of the face than the proportions. The shoulders are much too broad , the waist is too low, and the hips too narrow. It's like you've superimposed the idealised wedge-shaped male body type on a female. Looking back over your earlier pieces it looks like you tend to do this pretty consistently, so be carefull.

nice drawings and i can see you looking for the simple shapes like tiny hands mentioned you might want to pick up the bridgman book on constuctive anatomy and life drawing (each like 10 bucks on amazon) to understand what creates the shapes you are drawing. you have made great improvements on your drawings. good job

These are all very interesting, winjer. Keep at it. I like the contour style you're producing, and you have an obvious desire to emphasize and simplify the shapes you draw. I see problems with spacial relationships, however. I would recommend doing exercises that concentrate on that alone, and not trying to finish things too soon. Don't let your style get in the way of accuracy.

And here I find you group of people that have the wonderful oppurtunity to draw in life study classes :P

As for me , I draw out of my head through studying anatomy out of the textbook? Is that bad?

I know life drawing teaches you faster but I just dont have the money or the time to do that.. and im stuck on digital drawings too.. is that bad?

Money will be the least of your problems with that attitude. You'll need time and good will to be good. And digital drawings isnt bad at all, in fact, I would kill to get my hands on a wacom tablet  and start doing digital stuff. traditional media is dirtier too, but at the end it helps you alot more in the transition to digital media, then by starting digital from the beginning. In my case, i havent even posted an image before (except for a mouse painting i did) cause i dont have a scanner or a camera to help me out and have critique but anyway i still post cause the guys/gals involved with conceptart.org are very damn helpful and inspirational.

as lady lioness said, if you are SO interested in going traditional, get some paper and a pencil (or pen for the matter!) and start drawing everythig you see. people, animals, objects, anything! and do it daily if you can. its not that hard, yu just need to be dedicated.

good luck man!

and winjer, you KICK ASS! what are you studying and where?

Anarchy i dont go to college at all. I start in september at sva but theyre being assholes and making me take lots of bs even though i transferred a bunch of credits. Just going to life drawing is probably better than college and an order of magnitude less expensive.

These last few posts are showing a lot of improvement in form and proportions as opposed to your earlier posts.

It's nice to see the construction of the base shapes in these sketches as opposed to your first posts that look like you tried to go for a completed drawing from the start.

So many people want to skip right to a final product without starting with construction of the main form.

Why do you think instructors makes you do all of those one minute gestures?;)

Hey man, you've got some good studies here. Seems you are patient with your drawings, which is a good thing. Sometimes your anatomy seems generalized, as in, you draw what you think the muscle looks like, rather then what you are seeing. I get that feeling from the graphic nature of some of your shapes. Also, I think the softer shadows look better. When you get real harsh with them, they abstract somewhat. I like when you've softened the shadows some, as in this one

http://winjer.kicks-ass.net/47.jpg

Not to say harsh lighting isnt good, its definitely more ideal for mood, but you gotta soften and blend it some to make it look more natural, and less graphic. Hope this helps...lets both keep doing!
