This is a thread where one image a day will be posted, in an attempt to improve drawing skills.
For Genius_Malignus, Sir Gimp and myself.

This image will be exchanged sometimes or not :P
It is probably not mine :)

*Update 20-10-2008* Sir Gimp left the thread some months ago now (we still hope he finds time to come back some day), and we have been joined by some new people in the meantime:

Munkes, Greywoods, Petruska & Martinity.

So in total we are now 6 people posting in here =)

Welcome! The expression is weird, but cool. You need to work on the eyes and one of those ears looks way too long. Keep drawing and you'll see improvement!

Hey people,

Tabu: Solid sketch. As it's just a sketch, I won't come down too hard. Using that many wild marks doesn't help the form of the drawing, it only flattens it out. You may have better lucky trying to use economical lines on the exterior contours and using directional hatching to define the planes of the features. When using a lot of thick reitirated lines on the exterior contours, it prevents the drawing from even beginning to convey form.

Genius_Malignus: Very painterly. And by painterly I mean that you used broad shapes to define the planes. Even when using this approach, it's still possible to define the smaller areas through implications and the gestalt principles. Form is defined within a painting by the shift in value and direction of two planes and where that edge meets. If the planes aren't defined correctly, the image doesn't attain the understanding of volume and form suffers. The girl is much stronger in this regard, with the directional strokes and the more confident marks. Always work on confidence in your line, it goes a long way towards improving your understanding.

@ItalianHorsey: Thx, I have taken note, and yes, the ears are wierd, and the eyes are somwhat off.. its funny how a scan can mess up a perfectly good sketch, hehe :)

@That fat kid: Super feedback, thx. Unfortunatly I dident read your comment before making todays sketch. I will definatly try to put less pressure on the conture, and create the shape from within, giving more shape to the figure.

Thanks for your comment, you have hit my weaknesses spot on. I have a real problem with expressing shape and making the drawing 'pop'. And I lack confidence in my strokes and line work.

It's awesome how consistent you are with posting so far, keep it up! While I can manage to draw daily, somehow scanning and posting my stuff at the end of a long and arduous day is beyond me..

The two digital portraits you did have pretty good proportions, but the latest not so much.. what worked for me was getting a good diagram of facial proportion, lets say from one of Andrew Loomis' books, and referencing the spatial relationship of the 3 main planes of the face (chin to bottom of nose, nose to top of eye socket, and finally up to the hairline) while doing the underlying sketch for your portraits. Helps immensely in that you realise that most heads don't diverge that far from the average, and it hones your ability to feel when they're out of proportion.

It's really easy to get sucked into detailing really early, but spending more time on the underlying structure is definately rewarding..

You have to buy the other two guys beer, if you fail to post. That helps on the motivation =)

I didn't do an underlying sketch or outlining, I just got cracking with it. I get your point though, and it would probably have helped with better planning, and adhering to technical principles.

And thanks for your comment.

Hey champ.
try to work on the value - if you had worked a bit more on the eyes it would have been a lot stronger. In that respect your last sketch worked better.

Looked at the sketch again, and thought that it resembled a marionette so much, that I had to try and put some strings on it.

ItalianHorsey
February 16th, 2008, 05:30 PM
Oh haha, I didn't realize that this was going to be a multiple person sketchbook. I didn't really read the first post, that's prolly why haha.

Mailgnus - That one sketch of that clown is pretty creepy man, but awesome and cool marionette idea.

Gimp - Love the clown style. Keep it goin!

Tabu - Try to make hard edges too, all you have is soft edges and they are the same shade as the shadows. Plus the shadows are all one tone. Keep drawing!

Genius_Malignus
February 20th, 2008, 07:54 AM
@ Sir Gimp: I think you really nailed it this time; the eyes work extremely well. You have definitely succeeded in creating a sympathetic face for the character, with very simple means. Good work man!

@ Tabu: That one is your best so far. With a little more work, it could be a lot stronger. If you work with the edges, like the one where the right side of his face meets the background, the bridge of his nose, the mouth and the chin it would make the shapes stand out a lot clearer.
Also adding some more value by the eyes, mouth and maybe nose will make it stand out more.
I think that by just darkening the background on the left side of the head, so that it is darker than his skin, will make a lot of difference and maybe make sense to what I wrote above. Try it if you like.

Did I make sense? =)

Btw your Croquis from yesterday, is some of the best I've seen from you. Keep it up! (oh and when you post croquis, could you include how long it took to draw?).

A nordic themed environent. Took a couple of hours. Could work a lot more on this, as its little more than a sketch at this point.

@ Sir Gimp: Im liking that cover/poster a lot better than the one I saw, when I visited you. You really caught the environment/colours/mood of the game. And the font works pretty well too.
Im still not feeling the mime though. She almost looks drugged, or drunk. If you could change the face, it would work a lot better I think. And I think I would connect with her better, if she was looking at me, or at the invisible wall, instead of gazing out to the side, as if in a daze.

I had absolutely no ideas or inspiration today. This is what I ended up with.

Sir Gimp
March 28th, 2008, 05:53 PM
Hey thats great Tabu. You should try starting with a more neutral color in the background. It makes it much easier for you to work with the white values and create shape. Painting and sketching is two very different things. When you paint you try to create shape from the colours, when you sketch you mostly work with the silhuette and light/dark values. You might actually be more of a painter than a sketcher. I think you should try painting more.

Thank you for the crit Genius... to late to do anything about it since its already in print. One of those fast 4 hour works. Hate it.

Genius_Malignus
March 29th, 2008, 03:46 PM
@ Tabu: How fitting that you have painted Jesus, considering that we just passed easter. Not bad at all.
And regarding Chow - Confidence is something you work on, and I have built up a lot by participating in chow. And I'm far from one of the best artists doing it. When I'm at my best, I'm maybe in the middle strata of skill levels.
But just seeing what the others come up with, and listening to their comments, has hlped me a lot.

I've decided to focus on designing 'Captain Skinner' for Chow. Here are some more expressions.

Its nice to see you work painterly Tabu - your desription of space works a lot better this way, than in your pencil sketches. On the grey head, just a dab of white on the nose, cheekbones and maybe chin, would make a big difference, and make it stand out a lot more. I think at least =)
Oh and thank you for not abusing the airbrush.

Heres the nearly finished model sheet, for my chow submission. I still need to clean up the capn, redraw his sword, and maybe squeeze in a few detail shots.
Its fun playing with a humorous style again.

Heres for monday & Tuesday.
The first one is an exercise using the brush at 100% Opacity/Flow, and the same brush for the entire painting. I also didn't adjust the pic in any way. Considering the result, it took a surprisingly long time to paint.

The second one is a bit of the same, but with a character instead. The eye effect and background were added afterwards. Not too happy with the pose. Dynamic figure drawing from the head, is a huge weakness of mine. I should practice it a lot more.

My daily is some quick figure drawing exercises, copied from Andrew Loomis figure drawing book.
The first one was done with mouse, because I was lazy.

Genius_Malignus
April 19th, 2008, 12:04 AM
My daily is supposed to be Allie's sire. Haven't come up with a name for her yet.
Embraced in the late 1700's, She was a Black Widow by trade, marrying wealthy men, and then killing them off - preferably by poison.
Someone thought that her particular brand of madness, was worth preserving for eternity, and after she became a vampire, she continued with business as usual. After a while she realized that she didn't need the patronage of men anymore, and began exploring the larger society of the undead. At some point she met Allie, and found in her a kind of kindred soul.
She suffers from a kind of psychosis and paranoid delusion. Voices tell her that other people are out to get her, and that she must get them first.
This has made her somewhat isolated, as she inevitably attempts to asassinate anyone she is associated with for longer periods of time.
This is also the main reason for her and Allie parting ways. They haven't kept in touch, and she is rumored to have joined the Sabbat, sometime in the late 1940's.
As usual I would have liked to pour on some more details, and the left hand is bad. The stance also doesn't really convey her personality - its more of a fighter stance I think. I fell in love with it and had to use it. I spend quite some time on it; It was a slow night at work =)
