While browsing another art forum, I came across a term I'd never heard before, "flatter".

"Looking for a flatter , Looking for someone to help with flats, Colorist in need of a flatter, Freelance flatter available", etc.

Is it a color blocker or masker? I tried to Google the term, and I did a search here, but didn't find anything; perhaps I didn't search the right keyword(s). Can anyone tell me what it is? It's bugging me.

Thanks in advance.

As I understand it, it's someone putting down block areas of solid colour under the linework in a digitally coloured comic.. No shading or anything like that.

Hmm curious , depends what it refers to , maybe they were talking of the flatness of a form , you know how it doesn't have any depth and such. Or if its is used for sculpture to flat the shape ... it could mean lots of things >>freelance flatter might be the guy that buts the basic colors on something the"flats" abd then other guy's work it.

It's a person that lays flat colors over(actually under as Flake said) shapes to isolate them for a comic artist to use when creating selective masks in photoshop. It's a very time consuming and tedious process but it is another way to break into comics.
