Very nice work so far.

Apocalypse_Rex got the preening down.

My bird doesn't look like he is preening i should have angled his face. Think i might bury his beak in feathers and a few ruffled ones might do the trick.

Topics like this make me remember what dsg is good for: tackling crazy-ass random topics that are really difficult and that I'd never think to approach on my own. (No sarcasm. Just a little bit closer to understanding the crazy geometry of a folded bird wing.)

Here's my meager offering. 30 mins, no ref.
This is my first DSG, it's a fun way to wind down the day! :yayca:

Mine looks more like a giant bloated parrot than a daemon. Another high chroma monstrosity from muleskinner :). Good feathers and preening challenge for me. Great topic.

Apoc:I could tell he was preening right away,I think its the stance even more then the actual feathers in the mouth. The only other way mine yours and a few others would work otherwise, is if the topic were "STRANGE BIRD-WINGED DAEMON IS SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT HIS REAR END" ;)
Monsterfeets: I like you character a lot, I would like to see more of him
Mitz:nice rendering of the face, is one eye squinting from the wind? it seems so
Silent: thats a wicked sketch, I like the shapes of each part, I would love to see some color
Brinkman: welcome to D.S.G., not bad for 30 min, that boy looks victorious
cookiedeamon:welcome to D.S.G., nice use of color, and great character
Muleskinner: He is a fluffy guy, maybe a little less saturated yellow in the characters left wing, on the right side. hope that didn't confuse you.nice work

Wow. Really good artworks! I'm sufficiently inspired to draw!
Mitze: great texture work
Silentbrain: wow! I was thinking along the same concept when i read the topic. But the double face part you added is amazing!
Arteater: Great environmental effect. Maybe the bright reflecting off of the water should be shining up into the underside of the demon's wing?
Monsterfeets: I really love the concept of your demon. Is there more than one light source? It looks as if it's light from different angles, in some spots.

All i've got are doodles here at work in pen on paper napkins, but i'll do an actually submission after work if i've got time today.

Did it really quick. I think I might have messed up the light source.

All the sketches look awesome today!

I'd like to offer some constructive crits if I may :grandpa:
I realize these are speedies, but I'll offer crits anyway in the spirit of growth :)

Arteater- You've got some nice lighting going on here, I really like the glowing light feel. I think you could push the saturation in your colors; it looks like you are using a lot of white for highlights, which has a tendency to wash out the over all palette. You could use some more sharp edges, the image has an overall fuzzy feeling.

Apocalypse_Rex- This is a really nice paint! The only thing I'd change is to push the shadows on lower body and right wing of the creature to support the reall nice lighting on the top left wing. It has nice, glowing light on the wing, but the rest seems to be a little too evenly lit.

monsterfeets- Nice color choices and textures going on here. The light source is ambiguous here... the orange glow is nice, but it seems to be in places it shouldn't.

Mitze- This is really nice! I think the only problem here is the imbalance in detail. I realize that this may be a speedy and therefore unfinished, but the super rough, basic strokes right next to fine detail is distracting.

silentbrain- Nice details and really creative and creepy design. This could definitely do with some more dark values to establish more weight and contrast.

me- This is pretty uncreative...basically a human with a pteradachtyl head. Not even preening! Could use more detail and some more room in frame to breath as well as some other recognizable object to establish scale.

Cookiedemon- These are cool creatures and I like how you've included two; it implies community and intelligence. I guess I'm going to hound on light sources today... For the most part the lighting makes sense, but the right creature has some highlights facing the tree that don't quite make sense to me.

muleskinner- This has some nice colors and brush work. I also like the way it resembles a doughy human. I don't quite understand how you make the decision about which strokes are hard-edged and which are soft. I'd say there is too much soft brush work here. Generally you want to define the edges of shapes with hard edges and use soft brushwork for gradations on the interior of objects. I think you'll find too, that reducing the softness of your general brush work will also reduce some muddiness that happens in the colors. This has a lot of character though, he's strangely really likable.

Zaelzar- I think you hit it right on the head... the light source is ambiguous. I like his big eyes and wild hair...they have lots of character.

hamsta- I almost missed yours! :$ This is so funny! I like the color choices. I think this would benefit from some harder, more defined edges... and because I've been repeating it over and over... it could use a more defined light source.

Hope these are helpful!
Andy

Nope! :)

Your piece is a funny take on the topic! I love how the demon looks pissed that he's gotta get preened. With your piece I'd say that the value range could be pushed more, I think your highlights are fine, but there could be stronger shadows (e.g. darker, less gray, more saturation).

Another general thing to note that applies to many of these: I tend to think it's better to have a background of solid, simple shapes that have compositional value rather than a mass of more complex, yet aimless strokes or a blurred mass of color. A busy, abstracted background will only draw focus and condense space without contributing to sight lines or flow.

leikosuzuka- I think the design of your demon is great in it's mysteriousness. The color choices are also strong. Are you working with a mouse? (The angular lassoed color suggests that) If so, you might want to try bezier curves with the pen tool, it's got a steep learning curve, but you'll be able to get smooth contours and have more (and non-destructive!) control.

Whew! Again, I hope there are no hard feelings over crits, this is all in the spirit of getting better together!

Thanks so much for the crit! I was hoping you'd say something. ^^ Yeah, working with a touchpad actually, but yeah that sounds like a good idea I'll try that next time I'm coloring my artwork.

Here's mine, though it's maybe a bit too much on the sketchy side. Half an hour or so in OpenCanvas 1.1 (way too long).

Brinkman Hmm... very Aztec/Maya/Inca (erase the wrong answers) isn't it? The skirt, the head which seems like it was taken from a statue of these people. They even had pyramids, although your's is more in the Egyptian style. Speaking of the pyramid, it's a shame your bg is so unrefined, posing such a stark contrast to your highly rendered bird guy.

It looks like you have a pretty firm grasp of anatomy, even without ref, but I wish it would have been more about showing us the action of cleaning his feathers, rather than airing out his armpits ;)

Arteater I get the feeling I've seen this bird before... South America probably, not quite as daemonic (a process running in the bg under unix?) as some of the other offerings here.
I like the choice of light source, it would have been nicer to see you push it further - kick up the contrast to make the light really shine, and have it reflect unto the bird.
Your airbrush is a little splotchy, maybe fiddle with it's settings to make it smoother?

UnSharpened; Welcome! You created a nice atmosphere with those colors. Nice take on the tongue too. Think you could have gone for a better crop, your creature seems kind of 'crammed' in the borders of your piece. Also doesn't show how that wing is bent, seems uncomfortable. Good stuff, hoping to see you more often!

Hope its not too dark.. fine on my screen ;o

Anthis: Thanks man:D. I know what you mean. actually I started with Painter, which is the application I'm not as familiar as PS. Therefore I spent most of time on getting used to with it, and I ended up with losing my temper after finished the foreground:^^;:.
I quite like your post, the composition is nice, and love the design of head specially. Nothing really to crit, only would love to see more detail:P.
