Thanks, Terrie. I wish I had more time to pump more of these out, but I'm crunching at work again, AND working on a personal project. I just liked the reference for this one so much that I had to make time for it. Thanks for the crit! I'll keep at it. :)

Very nice piece here. The only thing I have a problem with is the left leg near the knee. The spot with the highlight to it. It seems like she just got a skin-graft there. But, the work is excellent and well done.

Whtz...whcha...WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy frikken realism dude. That is some nice nice nice stuff :D

One thing tho, the left leg's reflected shadow does not match the shadow accent on the lighted part of the leg. Dunno if u know what I mean.

I think it looks beautiful - you did a great job on the Jam - incredible.

The figure is very realistic, but the cloth around her doesn't seem to be on the same level of detail.

Damn..definately not what I expected when I clicked on the link. I seriously sat back in a "woah" moment. Awesome job.

My only question is: what's going on with that wierd hard shadow on her upper leg? It confuses me...almost makes it look like it's still a WIP...dunno what it's purpose was, or if it was in the reference, but it's really distracting me from an otherwise phenominal piece.

*edit*

OMG that process slideshow has me mesmerized!

*edit*

Sorry, gotta edit one more time. :o I just read that thread that prompted this piece of work...I live in Irvine! I saw that Brian guy worked for Black Isle (that's right down the road from me??? WTF!)...just wondering what you did for a living?

Man, I wish I wasn't too old and along another career path to go to art school. :/

Wow, way more responses than I expected!

Mysen - Thanks! Ever fan is appreciated. :)

Sypha - Thanks for the crit. I tend it disagree with this one in particular, but your point is noted.

NOOSE - Thanks, that's one of the reasons I post process, there was a huge flame war on The Drawing board about photoreal paintings. That, and I just love seeing people's process.

Chukw - I get stuck watching it a lot too, ha ha. Thanks!

BluePencilArtist - Glad you like it, I'll have more when I find the time.

meDrawUC - I dunno if I know what you meant either. Sorry!

BlueHarp411 - thanks

mtw - I really liked the softness of the original, and to elaborate on that I tried to give the background a really soft feel to bring out the clean lines of the figure more. I could go into greater detail with the background, but I don't think it would really add anything to the painting. What do you think?

fukifino - Oh, is this what meDrawUC was talking about? I kinda see it now, maybe I exaggerated it too much. You're never too old to change the path of your life. Just look at the big picture and realize you have the vast majority of your life left. Currently, I'm an animator at Blizzard working on World of Warcraft. Manley gave me a nice introduction on this thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3083) if you want to know a little more.

iffy - Gee, I wonder if you're the same iffy flaming in the Drawing Jam thread. See that thread if you want my response to your posts there.

DragonGX - no prob.

MIKECORRIERO - Wow, what a great compliment!

ODIN SIX - Thanks. I love doing figure studies. I'm starting to want a laptop so I can do them from life more often.

sone_one - Thanks, you're welcome.

HOON - ditto

alti - I'll try to churn another one out soon, but I'm not making any promises. Working a lot and working on a side project too.

pstraub - thanks!

Whew!

I have to ask: is it Painter or Photoshop?
What kind of brushes are you suing? Is there a lot of blending going on, or just a lot of transparent layers?

Come on man, we want to know more about the technique :)

BurnComics
September 23rd, 2003, 07:05 PM
It's 99% painter, with a bit of touch up in photoshop. I painted it with a circular brush (hard edged for details, soft for blending) with 25% resat 50% bleed, and brush loading turned on. It gives a nice oil feeling, let's you push and pull colors around, layer and blend really easily. In photoshop, I just did color corrections and the gausian blur you see on the background. Any other questions, just ask. :)

Thanks, all.

very nice job! I really liked the process piece too.
My only thought is that the hard highlight and shape on the left thigh makes it look as if it's a giant thumb or big toe emerging from her hip.

That "process" thing is by far the most useful, helpful thing I've seen on this site (and there's a lot of great stuff in here already). I wish all the work on here had that. I don't think there are too many things more important than understanding HOW an artist achieved the end product. Thank you VERY much for including that!!

This is very nice, there really is a lot to be said for this kind of work. But I won't say it. ;) This kind of work is also tough to give a good crit on because I'm just so blown away by the attention to detail and colour that I just don't notice mistakes.
Anyway, I loved the process show and I only wish I could find the patience and time to do something like this.

Iffy: I guess everybody is allowed there opinion, but man... talk about being a forceful little shrew. Where's your work?

BurnComics

Wow! I never thought this would have gotten so many responses.

Loga4 - thanks!

underdevelopedbrain - Thanks for the bump, Josh. ;) When are we going to see more of your work on here?

Yaseck - glad you liked it

BC1967 - I'm not sure what you mean.

bgermain - Wow, what a compliment! I agree, process is often more important to me than the final work. I love seeing how other artists work.

Chromo48 - Thanks, it did take a lot of patience. As long as you stay loose and focused, it's really not that hard though. It's just a really good excercise to study light, color, and form.

Iffy - I do agree with a lot of what you are saying, but you often seem to just be instigating. People would probably respect your opinion a lot more if you posted some of your own work. Everyone's a critic, after all.

fukifino
October 3rd, 2003, 03:11 PM
I think BC1967 is commenting about the same thing I commented about: that light on the lower part of her upper leg. It DOES really make it look like she's got one leg, and one giant thumb for a leg. Hehe.

But you were faithful to the original, and as I said before, it's an awesome rendition.

BTW, thanks for your encouragement in your previous comment. After talking with some other folks on other forums, I'm actually going to spend the next year (or two) doing what is required to make the transition to illustrator. :D

Ok, I finally see what you guys are saying. The light falling on her left leg does look a little like a huge toenail. Not a big deal though, but thanks for pointing it out. :)

fukifino - that's really cool to hear you're gonna go for it. Don't half ass it, though. Work your ass off, and you'll be able to make it.
