wow!! i really like it - i'd like to see more highlights/shadows on the dress - or rather, more contrast - her face and arm are VERY well defined, they look awesome, but for me the dress is the tiniest bit flat - the folds and the fabric are stellar, but it doesn't quite have the dimension that her face and arm do - don't take that as 'not awesome' however :) it IS awesome :) the dress just looks a tiny bit flat - i want to see more!!!

Wish I Could Paint,
Adam

thanks! yes, i am having a lot of problems with contrast. i never seem to go light enough, and everything is usually very muted and dark. my fav. part too is her arm. heh, my teacher actually said that the folds in her dress were too dark. but yeah, i should have put some highlights in the folds to give it more form.

Hey Daarken...good stuff man. Really good. I see that you went with the "foster" red nose heheh (that is foster who does that right?). At any rate really great job. I think this may be the way the actual model posed but something about her positioning rubs me the wrong way. Her right hip seems to be too far to the left in the painting. I'm not sure if that's a byproduct of the fabric or just positioning. That's just something I noticed. But wow...amazing man. I really really love your work. I look at your digital paintings over and over again...I love them. And this piece didn't disappoint me any less...great job!

mind: thanks for the comments! actually, many artists paint figures with red noses as well as red ears. about her hip...my teachers always say to push the gesture of the model. i just really wanted to capture her sexy/seductive gesture.

That's a good point Daarken. Actually the more I look at it the more I like it. I definitely don't think it's always good to go for "realism". Stick that hip out girl!

I love the gesture on this. I think its pushed "just enough" to fulfill what you wanted: to convey sensuality. I'd do her!! Uh,... thats not like your sister or anything, is it?

celtic: that is my sister!! haha, no just kidding, my sister is hotter, mwahahaha!

ok, last tuesday was blue day...i dont like this one as much as the red day one. the comp was really crappy...i should have changed angles before i started painting. oh well.

You constantly amaze me. Your work is so awesome. You are definitely capable of being a professional. I'm not sure if you are already but you are definitely capable of it that's for sure. The only problem I see with this picture is that the fingers look a little long...just a tad. But it looks great. I love the style. How long did it take you to get this good?

mind: haha, thanks! i really dont think im good enough yet to be a professional. maybe in 5 years. the only way you can get better is to draw all the time. draw everything around you. i just started drawing every day for the past month and already i can see my progress. that is basically the only tip i can give.

I really like them.
Since i´m a complete inept dealing with traditional mediums i found those amazing. I like the second one more it has more color variation even been blue, the first one looks too... similar? to me maybe darker curtain? i dont really know.

I was amazed about other thing. How much time did you spent on those? You cannot tell me that you did them in just one day each, did you?...

jaku: yes, i did these during class. they are probably around 3 hours each.

great skin tones in the first one! I think you may have over done the folds in the dress a little much. I find them alittle distracting but I really like the face. and yah the red nose is really nice aswell.

Ah, good old Terry with his long wispy eyebrows. I have a few pics of drawings of him that I want to scan, alas I have no website yet so posting may not be an option for a while. Anywho, nice work. I especially like the pattern of wrinkles on the red dress. Very visually appealing.Highlights on the bracelet are nice too.

haha, yeah terry is pretty cool to draw. yeah, i think i over did the folds in both the paintings. my teacher said the same thing.

Hey Daarken,
This is really great work. I am impressed...cause with oils you don't get a second chance...so I've heard. The proportions don't look bad to me. I could just not be noticing but they look ok to me. I would say the highlight on his forehead is a little weird but the painting looks great...I am really impressed. Good job man.

Awesome stuff as usual daarken. Looks great as usual! I love the skin tones. My only problem with the painting is the blanket or whatever she is holding. It doesn't seem to be resting on her it seems to almost be hovering. Sheesh talk about difficult...man. Good work though bro...looks awesome.

you're becoming one of my favourite artists on this board with lightspeed. You did awesome improvement in the last weeks my friend.
The last painting is already very nice. Now try to get your oils under control. The paint is still too muddy in some parts.
But you're definately on the right track.

kaini: wow! i dont know what to say! your oil paintings are just beautiful. i hope to one day be at that level. yes, my paintings always end up being really muddy. i think because i dont use any mediums or turp, i just usually use straight paint, and then i end up adding more and more, and it all mooshes around. i need to remember fat over lean! thanks for the very kind words! i shall work harder.

Awesome stuff Daarken I really like this one. Looks great! I have never painted before so I didn't really know a lot of what they were talking about in this article but I found this on Craig Mullins' website. Touches on what you were saying about using turp and stuff.
