Hey Guys... we'd love to hear your feedback! :) This one's definitely a winner.

Before watching this video, I was always worried about how to look sexy if a giant tentacled sea monster pulled me down to his underwater lair. That is a concern no longer. (Thank you Jason Chan!!)
I'm also no longer concerned with how to complete a digital illustration based on an approved thumbnail sketch.

This digital download is replete with valuable insights on a variety of topics
including drapery, textured surfaces, depth of field, and unusual lighting scenarios.

Your support goes a long way to helping conceptart.org stay open and free from advertising. We were able to purchase server upgrades, thanks to those who picked up the previous vids. We have a lot more to do...so thanks again for the support.

I've only watched half of the video so far, but its incredibly inspiring. When I was half-way through, I was compelled with the irresistable urge to draw. Totally worth the purchase.

Thank you Jason Chan!

"Be a Jason Chan"?

Seriously, I thought the object was to enhance our own talents with these vids--not to copy someone else's. That's why I didn't buy Android's most recent; I was worried I would end up just copying his techniques and people would just compare my work to his. Besides, I thought all the MB guys (girls too) would be taken aback by copycat artwork.

Anyway, this one looks promising and I'm downloading now... (for the PS insight).

Still waiting on Jason Manley to share with us his color theory videos.

you can't be serious. The whole point of learning and advancing is to learn from others. Why re invent the wheel.... you develop a style by mixing everything you learn and take in. Your conscience and sub-conscience will process it in a way that is unique to you. you actually have to make a conscience effort to be a copy-cat and for the most part that will cause you to work agfainst your natural progresssion if you do..... if the line 'be jason chan' is bothering you then read it like this Jason chan is a sucessful freelance illustrator so instead of reading be Jason Chan read it as be a successful freelance illustrator --- nuff said

Simply put, Android Jones has developed certain techniques that more or less define his style. If a new artist were to use those same techniques, even in an imaginative way, a viewer familiar with Android's work could likely draw a comparison between the two works even though they are from different artists. And here is the crux of the learning-through-another-artist's-methods: Who wants to be compared to someone else? Who wants to be the next Android Jones and who wants to be the first [your name here]?

whats really funny is andrew did not invent that style.... i am sure you learned how to shade with a pencil does that mean you are gonna be a copy of the teach/book/person that taught you that ... again the point of these vids are not to copy but to learn...you learned to talk and write by imitating but you do not sound or write or even walk for that matter like the person you learned from

good luck improving with that mindset.

closing off your inspiration will have the opposite effect of what you are hoping for, and it will kill your work.

true, copying someone else will only get you so far, but if you are afraid of instantly turning into a clone after watching an hour of someone paint... then you are just being silly.

Sweet! I can't wait to buy this video. Going to buy it in the next hour or so permitting that the wife doesn't jack the laptop before I have a chance.

I agree with Archipelago.

Erishaham, these dvd's and downloadable tutorials, in my mind, aren't meant for literally copying exactly what you see on the screen. I usually watch these videos for inspiration or just to see a technique/tool that I had not considered before. If you close yourself off from learning from other people then you are really limiting yourself. Art school, for example, you can't go to art school and delibrately ignore the teachers and then expect to have learned something. The only way to get better is to learn from the teachers. These dvds are no different. Plus...I would think it's pretty much impossible to watch a dvd and rip off an artists style without years of practice. Which of course begs the question that if you could rip off an artist style by one viewing...then obviously you would be some art badass...and if that's the case...why would you rip off a particular artists style anyway?

lol...I'll shut up now. stay in school kids!

I agree that the wording was off. MassiveDVD was just trying to get people excited. Thanks everyone for the support. I fixed the wording in the first post.

Mine would be done if not for DICE and GDC. I have been inundated with great projects and things should settle for me again in a few weeks. Will get back to it and wrap them up. Until then, more to come.

I think Erishaham has a good point to make, and that its not "silly" at all.

I think he means that he wishes to learn more foundations, such as the color theory lecture and perhaps something like perspective - things which will give him the freedom to express his ideas.

Watching how other people do things is great, but it's easy to forget the amount of time and effort that the artist has put in prior to the demonstration - such as mastery of drawing, value, color, composition, light etc - which is usually gained from work, study and time.

Inspiration is another matter however.

This was a great video. Both of his videos had me on a mad dash for costume and material reference. (if anyone has suggestions on good central resources for costume reference on the net let me know)

It is great to watch someone work and discuss their mindset and reasoning behind adjustments and stylistic choices. I have enjoyed both of Jason's videos immensely.

Thanks for the videos!

Sweet! more MB/chan coolness, everythings have been worth purchasing so far, so will look forward to this aswell!

about this :
"Simply put, Android Jones has developed certain techniques that more or less define his style"

there is some truth in your fiction and som fiction in your truth, first of all, utilizing a specific tool, doesnt make a style, andrews "style" is deep in his knowledge of composition, color and and depth, and that most of his new work is "live" work. Working with abstract shapes in order to create new ones, that abstractionate something figurative, is basicly what we all do.

theres no idea in always wanting to be what everyone else is not. The way you think about it, leaves you with nothing to do, because if you dont want to be compared with others, then you are creating with a purpose that doesnt exist outside of the creation proccess itself. everything has been done, everything has been said, repeating it with a new intent is what creates "new" stuff.

beeing original/"copying"/repeating history - same/same/same.

be smart. start learing from others, the world, your life, and everything it contains.

For reference, I am most interested in historically accurate clothing from a variety of cultures and nations. I think that vintage clothing and costume companies would be a better start for my searches, that is a good tip. Knowing the kinds of terms to search for makes all the difference! Thank you.

It would be nice if there was a central site out there that focused on collecting all varieties of clothing/costume reference, because sometimes it is good to have suggestions that one never thinks of alone.

I'll be honest, I was kind of dissapointed that he didn't go through his thumbnails in the beginning. It was just like "omg magic thumbnail/value color study is all done!"

...of course that dissapointment quickly faded as I was inundated with information and insight...I just learned a ton from this video. I can't thank you all enough for producing these videos, and making them so readily available.

I'm constantly surprised by what kind of insight and information each video contains :)

I watched the video and thought to myself, "This is the best day of my life." Like Tex said, it is sad that the thumbnail stage was not included. Though it's just a wonder to see Mr. Chan paint in itself.

My money was well spent. Thank you MB!

i thought that the thumbnail process would of been more along the lines of his first download.... so no need to use the same picture when the concept is the same

uhmm his first video [the one for painter] in the description says: "no thumbnails. no plans."

Although I understand the thumbnailing process, It is really more a critique I have as an educational video. Not necessarily showing him drawing [that would eat up a lot of time] Even just showing an overview of the different thumbnail sketches he would have made, or some different color/value combos that he may have came up with.

Again, I am very happy with the video, as I did learn a lot from it. Seeing everyone's working process is really great, as everyone has a slightly different approach to the same problem :)

ok i think you are missing what i was saying...... the first video says no thumnail no plans cause it is the initial sketch. i has to start with no thumb nails no plans.... if you watch the video you will see him plan things out... it is called 'a sketch'

Isn't a thumbnail basically a small sketch?
Nevermind, it's not worth argueing about hehe.

It was nice seeying him paint in Photoshop, I like how he keeps everything smooth and loose, picked up some cool tips along the way.

Keep them comming I'dd say, it's a small price to pay for information that lasts a lifetime. :asslick:
