Howdy everyone. I've been lurking here for a long time and would love some feedback on my work. Most of what I do isn't "concept-y" per se, but I love digital painting and I love CA!!! :yayca:
I moved the speedies down one post, for sake of ease!

Neat. The last one is the most impressive. See if you can find a model of a skull to study. Practice practice practice. Draw some faces from life.

eminkey- thanks. You're right about doing some life drawings, it's been a while for me!
Here are some morning doodles before I get to work. An out-of proportion Nat King Cole and a stubby naked guy. :)

Small update.
I'm doing prep work for a large-scale mural installation piece my art collective is putting up soon, so there hasn't been much time for digi-paints.
I'm trying to push a variety of hues in the skin tone here since I've been looking at Basil Gogos a lot lately.... is it working? Do I need to push it further?

Hey Brinkman,
thanks for the kind words in my SB, I would like to pass on some advice I was given to you, forget about the tablet and focus on the fundamentals, it'll really help you in many ways to progress further as an artist.

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. You got a good start going on here, but I'm going to have to echo what Warground Zer0 said. Pick up a pencil and start drawing... everything. Your paintings look like you are trying to show form, but it gets lost in the lack of value, making the image appear pretty flat. Using a light source other than one that is directly over head will help you in pulling forms forward and pushing others back. Keep up the hard work and update this SB will ya!

Howdy everyone it's been a long time, I shouldn't a left you, without some dope sketches to step to. :) Rakim anyone?
Anyways, here's a big ol' SB dump... some more digitals too! I marked most that aren't originals, but there's a study of a Basil Gogos in there (the skull guy with the hat).

Thanks for the replies, btw guys. I'm going to be drawing as much as I can!!!

I am really enjoying your drawings, more so than the paints, the paints are just so saturated that it gets a bit overwhelming.

Give us more! Really funny stuff.
I got really impressed by the worker
BRINKMAN!
March 17th, 2008, 08:21 PM
I've been wanting to say thank you for the crits and comments, but I've also wanted something to show for myself... so I finally got around to scanning some more SB stuff.
David- Thanks! I really appreciate it, cause it's easy to lose sight of the humor when you're drawing dudes with guns and swords all the time (which I'm doing...I'm just not posting because my concepting skills are shite as of right now!)
Blythe- I really appreciate your constructive crit! It's funny because my painting teacher kept telling me all last semester that my colors were too chalky and desaturated... I guess I over compensated! :)
OK, now on to some new [f]arts
Most are self explanatory, but the faces with brush pen are bus randos...and I've started coloring the fatty pic... I'd like crits on it, even though it's not that far along yet. :)

Just some doodles from tonight; little did Mr. Figure know I'd give him the dreaded chopper treatment!

Here's a quick update, so I'm not posting empty-handed. A quick vulture study.. haven't had time to draw at all in the past two days and it's making me grumpy!
I'm also upping a scan of some lines from my Pentel Pocket Brush... an awesome Brush Pen that I highly recommend (and it won't break the bank!)
Thanks all! Crits on all work welcome!

March 20th, 2008, 11:19 AM
Hey! Your sketchbook is really nice. You really nailed it with the vulture not to mention the worker with the dark brown face.I really like the contrast between the looseness of the shapes and the super clean lines.
That Pentel brush pen looks awesome! I've been hearing about it for a while. Craig Thompson uses one for his sketch book. http://blog.dootdootgarden.com/2008/02/07/je-suis-en-retard/
Is it true that the ink is not waterproof?
Do you have to clean it out after using it or can you just put the cap on?
Keep up the good work!

Here's a little update. I really should have more, but work and school have been keeping me super busy and not letting me put in enough time on my personal artwork.
I'm starting out with two cropped snippets of illustrations I'm doing for work. I can't show the whole thing for fear that someone might find them pre-program-launch. Becky Blue Bear (har har) and Rosie the Rabbit.
I've also been ruminating on some video-game related "fine art" ideas, and the third and fourth pics are beginnings/sketches in that vein. I've got some Pac-Man stuff in the old noggin that I'll post as soon as it works it's way out of my hands and onto the screen.

First off, thanks to Rarebit and Nico for their comments and support!
Secondly, here's a small update. I hope that once spring semester is done I'll have more time to paint.
Some figure studies, a small bit of progress on American Fatty and a pear that Just looked too delicious and was eaten before I could finish the painting :davi:

Quick update...doing some figure studies from pose maniacs and a speedie THX rip-off.
Hope to get some more work up soon! :yayca:

April 11th, 2008, 12:01 AM
Took a night off from the figure studies and did a quickie with a pun...
...also some SB scans of some people from the bus and a pizza place interior. I realize now that my perspective skills need mucho work!
The composition in the Shirt Jack piece is messed up, I know. I was trying a water color-y technique with PS CS3 here

Lunch break speedie. A self portrait from reference, about 40 mins... sadly, my drawing skills aren't to blame this time... my forhead really is that big!
BRINKMAN!
April 13th, 2008, 05:31 PM
I watched the James Kei digital figure painting video and got some itdeas as to where I was going wrong with my figure painting. I did a really quick (about an hour methinks) self portrait to try some things out... I feel like even though it's super rough and unfinished I hit some things in my flesh tones that hadn't been there before, so I'm pleased with the effort. I'm also throwing a portrait of Clint Eastwood up.
There aren't a whole lot of figure drawing opportunities here in Minneapolis, but there is something call Dr. Sketchy rolling through that I'm deffinately hitting up...any of you been before?
I'll have to get around to scanning some sketchbook in, do a proper update.
BRINKMAN!
April 15th, 2008, 12:21 AM
Here's another update.:lounge: Went to a web conference all day today... gave me a chance to do a bit of drawing. I also made a digital concept for practice since I'm really not very good at character concepts yet. Please drop me a line if you check this out... I'm starting to feel like I'm dropping art into a cavernous void :davi:
I would also LOVE crits on anything, but especially the cyber-pilot concept!!! :yayca:

I'm back after a six day hiatus without six days worth of work for you my friends :S
We start out with a figure study done without ref to test anatomy and proportion skills, so please crit my figure study! ... it'd be a valuable learning opportunity for me. Then there is a cowboy (who got the start of a proper background before I got antsy) and a weird sci-fi dude who's vaguely inspired by OG Star Wars.
I'll be back tonight with some more updates, but now I'm off to paint! :yayca:

What's a fellah gotta do to get some love round here?:davi:
Here's page one of a short comic I'm going to be churning out over the next couple'a weeks to force myself to paint backgrounds, no matter how simple.
Show me some love (and by love I mean crits or ass pats or anything...it's kinda lonely in here!)

don't get disheartened by the lack of comments in your SB, it can be somewhat annoying when you go out of your way to post praises in someone’s SB but they don't have the civility to return the gesture, even if your artistic ability might not be as good as there’s.
Keep posting and remain focused on improving your skills, that’s probably the best advice I can give you.

I really like that first cowboy-- with the little scratch-mark highlights.
That could be a really neat piece if you treated the clothes in the same manner, I think.
Your lines are getting better. Fluid lines seem to just come about with time

Hey,
I know it can get discouraging at times, you really ought to keep posting though, id love to see you update more regularly.
Good vibes from all the work youve posted since last i came through here, on the cowboy paint (b&w) i think the horizon line needs to be brought down some.

Here's some love!
The comic page is really cool. I wish there was more sequential stuff on this forum. The colors are freaking awesome! They are bright and exciting but not obnoxious. And the rendering style of the character is really appealing to me Especially his face.
I don't care for the frame layout. It seems like if you need to use arrows to guide the reader, it might be better to figure out a better layout. And (you probably already know this) the back grounds could get spiced up a bit more. Get some more specific detail like the moldings around the windows and maybe litter on the street.
But even with those critiques, I really like the style and I'm dying to know what happens to him and his news shoes. Post the rest!

Thanks again, guys, for your responses (especially crits). I really respect each of you as artists. You guys have inspired me to put off buying GTA 4 tonight, as I'd planned, and do a couple comic pages instead. :)

28chelseaslater-Thanks! The road my bus to and from work is really shitty and is the bane of my existence!!!
super skoda-Thanks man! You inspired me to pull the old watercolors out after a long time sitting in the art-crate. I agree about the reel to reel. I love the look of old recording gear and modular synths and whatnot.
invinciblewombat- Thanks! I've got one tonight you might like :)
Tonight'd update isn't a big one, sadly...BUT, and this is a big but, I've now both finish college (for good...yeah!) and gotten GTA4 out of my system, so the artwork shall pour forth!
I've got a little Marvin, a little kung fu watercolor WIP and a summer themed sketch for the art site Fecal Face's "Free Friday" (Don't worry, it's SFW other than the title. (http://www.fecalface.com/SF/)).

dchan- Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the kind words! :)
Here's something I made today at work because there's not a whole lot for me to do today. I was shooting for an "illustration" feel here...I'm not sure what "No Frontin'" is supposd to mean in this context, other than maybe that classic kung fu films are authentically dope are, indeed, not frontin.
I've been house sitting for my parents while they are in Italy, so the updates have been few and far between since I rarely get home to my computer...BUT(!) I've got the next New Shoes installment on the way AND a wip of a collab between me and rarebit that I started coming up soon, if not tonight!
That was long winded, thanks for reading and stopping by. :yayca:

I'm loving kung-fu Pompadour guys!
I really dig that rendering style! It feels really confident and looks especial on those hands. It reminds me of that dude with the reddish face and striped shirt on page 1. It's not quire as confident on the hair and face.
Keep it up!

Well friends, it's been a long time, too long. I've got a dump here for y'all. I don't have a real 2nd page of New Shoes, as promised to Skoda...but I have a sketch! Work has been kicking my ass lately...as if that's an excuse.

Here's a self portrait that I did tonight in the heat of my un-air-conditioned, 89 degree apartment!
I was really focusing on painting this thoughtfully... start with lines in sienna(ish digital color), then to darkest dark and lightest light, then block in mids... all while striving for economy and smart placement of strokes.
Needless to say, I have plenty of practicing to do.
This has about an hour into it.
This is a wip. If it's too wip to cit, let me know.:wip:

Catula!!!- Thanks! I'm honored your first comment is here too, so double thanks. :) Welcome!
Here's a painting that came out pretty quickly, but I like the way it came out. It gives me a Lucian Frued feeling. It's from reffernce and the kid really does have big eyes...in fact, I'll attach the refference. It was done in Painter 9 then PS CS3. I added noise after liking the look of Gabo's grainy masterpieces.
I'm still stewing on Yaddle.

What...what's wrong with that kid you did a painting of? I mean I like it, but it is a tiny bit unnerving.
What I really really like is your last set of sketchbook pages. Espeically the old woman you did. I love how it almost has a blind contour drawing feel to it with the lines going all over.
Keep it up! And maybe work on doing some digital stuff in black and white too to work on getting your contrast better. That's always helped me.

Mankoon- Thanks! I'm glad you stopped by. I'll pop on in to your SB too and have a look around. About the Pigeon Army gif.... it's not really for anything, just an idea inspired by a random photo I ran across.
I'm intrigued by the prospect of mining the internet for artistic inspiration. Web culture is so bizarre in that it is like an infinite expanse of dry grass, just waiting for the next meme to sweep across. The fringes of society find themselves in the spotlight of the internet at the expense of their dignity. The populous can all pitch in their 2 cent in anonymity and the result is this big, ugly mob rallying around freaks and losers. They mock them in total ignorance of the irony inherent in the fact that they themselves devote much of their time to useless drivel, needless inflammation and baseless speculation on the internet rather than pursuing a life based in reality.
I guess this applies specifically to "meme based" sites like 4chan, something awful and the like....
Enough ruminations, here's a WIP of a new painting so that I'm not coming empty-handed.

I worked and worked on the painting of my Gf and our cat, but I just couldn't get it right. My gf just looks like she's sleeping and my cat looks like she's pissed. So.... I started over with just Penny (the cat). I'm going for a much brighter, lighter and more stylized look. I figure something a little more decorative would be best, since I'm going to have this printed on some nice paper and framed.
I'm off to draw, another update soon.

There's a lot of concept exploration behind the rendering in your works, I like that!
How did you come up with the stroke shifting idea in Pigeon army? Great trick!
Although you seem obsessed with faces and expressions (and so am I) I think
you would enjoy doing some landscape and color play. It would also help you
for making the backgrounds in your comic - tell me you haven't abandoned it.
Interesting choice of colors in your SP. I think you could safely make the cold
shadows pop out more to stress the volumes and the 'here' feeling.
In the cat portrait, you may contrast the values somewhat more, although
I can't really guess how it will look in CMYK for printing.
Keep at those studies and explorations! I'll be back. Cheers!

Great sketchbook and very funny concepts. I think that the faces sometimes looks off, when you are drawing from imagination. I like your colors very much!
Itīs nice that you are trying out so many different styles. That riot control robot is great. My favorite is the pigeon army, very funny idea!

This one (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=322612&stc=1&d=1205210622) really caught my eye. Great color choices!

eminkey2003- Thanks. Confident lines are something I'm always striving for. I just recently saw dip in my line confidence for some reason... I guess I need to draw more!
Mumph- Thanks, glad you got a kick out of my stuff. If I may ask, what specifically is off about my faces from imagination? I know I have yet to master the proportions of the face but I drew all this stuff and looked at it too long, so your fresh set of eyes is very valuable to me.
Leo Ki- Leo, you are so right about both being obsessed with faces and needing to do some landscapes. I also need to draw more of the comic, I have it written even! :frustrated:
In regards to the pigeon: The wiggling lines are inspired by hand drawn animation of the "wiggle vision" variety.

Hey it seems like you have trouble placing down features in certain angles, check out Bridgman for some solid anatomy, it helped me so it might also help you I hope. Other than that, you have got some solid digital skills so far, but I can't wait till you step up to the next level!

Lots of nice form in that bank-robber guy, especially the gun. I think that your faces look flat in some strange places though, sometimes on an entire side. Try flipping the images horizontally and vertically, and you'll be able to see problems like that more easily.

I think one problem are the eyes, I think you put them too close together sometimes, especially in the 1/3 views. But I think this is more on the earlier stuff you posted. In that orc image (post #67) for example, the eyes are too far up and the skull seems to be too small. But as I said, this is just on some of the images.
In that fighter image his right arm seems to be a bit too big.
I think all the last studies have this problem, with the arms beeing too big (except the concept character :) )
I agree with Alm0st, study Bridgman, youīll learn a lot.
Great job with the cat and nice update.

Howdy friends and countrymen. It's been three days since I've updated because I've been having problem with Photoshop. Ever since I upgraded to Leorpard, PS crashes when I quit the program. It never hurts anything, it just never shuts down properly. I looked around and apparently this happens to other people too. Yes, I have a legal copy! Well anyway, that was fine... as long as PS wasn't hurting anybody I was cool with it. Two days ago Ps decided that not only would it crash on quitting, but that it would pull the Finder down with it every time, meaning I have to restart my computer every time I shut down PS. :[
I just repaired my disk permissions and I'm going to throw away my preffernces file (again) and hope that does the trick. This combined with the fact that directional angle jitter crashes PS every time makes me want to switch to painter... until, that is, I boot it up and realize how slow and cumbersome it is.
Rant done. Thanks for listening!
Here are some sketchbook doodles and a digital piece I'm just starting (wip).

Nice doodles! In that first one (the floating head) I think the ear is a bit too high up and the eyes donīt line up with the rest of the features. The chin also looks too flat.
I like the man in the helmet.
On the last one, the digital one, his forearm looks too big, along with the hand. I would look at some reference for the shirt to see how it folds. Nice job with the face. His cap looks a bit strange above the ear.
Nice update!

PS I'm loving Bridgman's approach to anatomy. I had only every studied from Hogarth and life before today. Bridgman has a renaissance feel whereas Hogarth has more of a Greek feel in his canon of proportions. I'll have some scans of my studies after Bridgman for yall tomorrow.

Yo,
I gotta agree that the features of the head are disproportional/wrong place in some cases; it's a tough thing to do though.
What helps me is when I do a simple block-in for the features and focus on proportion and location - if it looks proper in the simple form, when you add all the details it will be golden.
I used to focus on the detail and just draw all the features separately and it would almost always turn out weird.

Yo! Some of the faces look flat (the rendering), I think it has to do with the fact that there are no midtones. I also think, you should think more about the planes of the face rather than placing features on an egg shape.
Nice Bridgman studies!
Again, I think you place the eyes a bit too close on your faces.
I like the WIP painting although his right arm looks a bit strange below the biceps. The other ones are cool too.

yea as mentioned in a lot of posts before me, you need to define your light sources to establish a stronger sense of value, helps keep it from looking flat. other than that, your progress is indeed showing, along with your superb (superb over my crappy digital rendering skills) digital rendering skills.

When the palm is facing down, the bicep tends to elongate and have a flatter profile, even in more muscular individuals. I like the expression and energy of this WIP though so keep working on it. Also don't be afraid to experiment with different greens, blues, reds, etc, when working with skin tone. There's a lot of subtle variation and color shifts in the skin and it can really bring that vibrancy of life to play with it a bit. Good work man.

These studies could be a lot better and could have some context as little elf suggested. I opted to focus on planes this time through. I also tried a portrait piece with back-lighting. hey man!
Good progress on the crazed samurai. However, I noticed that his shirt is moving upwards; so either he's jumping down from something, or there's wind blowing upwards. In either case, you might want to get his hair to flow the same way the drapery is going... and if it is windy, adding some leaves or debris might add to the effect.
Don't forget some kind of background and some yummy chunks of gore on his sword.

On that landscape study, I think the clouds and sky in general could be more soft, especially the edges of the clouds. The next one is very nice, maybe the mountains could be a bit blurred to add more depth.
The doodles are really nice, I really like the face and expression of the man in the cap. Maybe his nose is a tad to red :)
The monster seems to have a very flat upper arm, I think itīs the shadow of the hand that is causing that. I think the anatomy is a bit off on the face too. Maybe it would look more correct if we didnīt see his left eye.

Some crits: the fingers are a little wormy in the last one. The facial proportions look awkward so far--just needs more practice to get it right. The guy on our right in Mike and Mitch has the far half of his face flattened; same problem with the black collar guy. Keep on drawing full bodies too, in order exercise putting it all together, and see work out how body parts move and connect to each other. And of course, more life drawing is usually good. Also, some forms still look flat or unfulfilled, like that fat guy's face. Is the jaw bone supposed to be in profile view? It doesn't seem to be contained within the face. : /
I really like the pose in the "Are you using the pen-thing" panel-- that looks pretty natural. Maybe you could push it more, so that it becomes more expressive.
By the way, you mentioned cyber-goth art, so I thought you would point you to "Blame!" the manga series, in case you haven't seen it already: http://www.studiokrum.com/blame/blmgalbox.html (just a preview of some pages there).

Very nice face studies! In the third one (post #134), on the right face, the eyes are way too close to eachother and the eyes should also be aproximatly in the middle of the head (I think the chin is a bit too big).
I like the one in ink a lot, maybe you could darken some more areas to get a better composition?
The Ahab image is a bit flat, maybe mixing the hard edges with soft ones can help to give depth.
Funny comic :) watch out on the perspective though, especially in the second frame.

Hey guys, normally I'm against posting in my SB without some art to show for it, but I just thought I'd let all you folks kind enough to stop by here that I had to wipe my drive and reinstall OSX today. The Finder was crashing on me constantly. At first it just happened when I quit any of the programs in CS3, then it started happening whenever I quit any program, then when I attempted to back up my recent work it just refused to open any Finder windows. :( I lost some good WIPs and I'll have to get all my software reinstalled. I won't get Photoshop and the rest of CS3 up and running again until Tuesday when I can get the disks from work (they kindly let me instal a license at home for doing work at home!).
A word to the wise: If. for some reason, you are still running OS 10.3 or lower and are planning on upgrading to Leopard don't migrate your accounts/files using the OS installer! It leads to all kinds of painful permissions issues that serious fuck your shit up. It's exactly this scenario that lead to my need for a reboot. I had an old 1st-gen Macbook Pro with 10.2 on it and transfered my account and files from it to my new Mac Pro. It took about a year, but eventually this proved to be my undoing.

The head study looks pretty solid, except that the back of the head in profile is dipping too low. I notice you like to draw big noses too, so I'd like to see some that are normal-sized.
The twins have some problems. The hand on the staff is too big, and the wrist can't bend that far. Also, try making your legs parallel to your shoulders like the bottom guy...ouch. : ( It's hard to tell that they're connected-- it looks more like one standing behind the other, so I'd pick another point-of-view. I think their heads may be too small as well.
Also, Chewie's torso looks too short, as if he's sunken into his own hips.

Oranje Joe,Alm0st- Thanks guys! Consider my ego stroked :)
eminkey2003- Thanks for the helpful input (as always!). I took some of your crits to heart and started over with a 3/4 view pose this time. It's still a rough sketch, but I think it's working better already!
The second go at Siamese Twins for this week's CHOW and some early sketchs for the twins.
Other thing is a quick mock up for a mural I'm going to paint in a friend's house.
eminkey2003

I really like the design of the twins, but the pose is very stiff. Your sketches look a little looser though. Keep it loose!
Mumph
January 25th, 2009, 04:55 PM
In that first siamese twins sketch the anatomy of the legs looks a bit strange, I think his legs are of different lenght (the one that is crouching). Nice sketches!

January 25th, 2009, 07:58 PM
whoa, you've been productive! Keep it up. The groin-to-shoulder or head-from-groin twin connections made me laugh, but your flying chubby body slam man is my favorite from this last batch.
You might consider adding another layer/background to your bird-mural for some more depth.
BRINKMAN!
January 26th, 2009, 11:31 PM
eminkey2003- Thanks, you're right about the stiffness, but I think it has to stay for this one since I've taken it farther than the "able to re-pose" phase! :S
Mumph- Thanks, yeah I scrapped that first one... as you said it wasn't working.
crabbyclem-Thank you sir, and you are so very right about the mural... the area behind the playground thing need something.
Here's a quick little update. A doodle and a snapshot of where the twins are.

And I really really like Dr.Katz and Home Movies
Did you get some pics of those wheatpastes?

DeathChalupa- Unfortunately those pics, along with a lot of other shit went to the big hard drive in the sky when I was experiencing computer problems recently.
Here's a WIP for this week's CHOW: I'm not abandoning the twins, it's just that this week's topic is too fun to pass up.

Howdy! Great stuff throughout this sketchbook, but i'm extremely fascinated by the last few pieces you did with the ms paint spray can! That spray can has always given me guff, i should try it again though.
Yessir, keep up the awesome work!
BRINKMAN!
January 30th, 2009, 04:01 PM
AustenFM- Firstly: Thanks! Your work is dope as well. Secondly: I almost want to let you continue to believe the hype, but alas, I can't... those black and white pieces where made in PS. Simply set the layer to "dissolve" and viola.
Here's an update to my CHOW entry along with what I posted in the CHOW thread:
Did some work on mine... still very much a WIP. The Background needs lots of work, the idea is that there's going to be a trail of destruction on the left side and untouched buildings on the right.
Also coming: Figuring out the warm natural lighting from the right. Also feet will be added to end the current cop-out!
Crits appreciated!

Mumph- Thanks, I'll keep working on Southpaw for sure.
super skoda- Thanks dude. I've never seen Millard before, but his work is awesome... so full of humor! Thanks for the link :)
A finished Southpaw is on the way sooner rather than later, as are some Hogarth studies. For now, though, here is some more exploration of Shake-E-Vision combined with some Street Fighter IV game-boner stoking.

absolutely loved the hellboy update there. there has been one thing that has been "bothering" me tho, it seems as tho most of your work seems close to being finished, close as in lacking that special polish in the end. I'm sure that just takes more time, and its something I can relate into not finishing, but I really would like to see a really finished polished piece (and I'd promise to do the same for you buddy ;P).

This is a little update to let you all know I'm still alive. Since you last heard from me I've gotten a new tablet complete with the fancy-schmancy art pen, worked toward finishing several big pieces and done some sketching, not to mention logging too many hours in Fallout 3 :) Big update tomorrow, I promise! For now, I leave you with this piece of craziness:

February 19th, 2009, 12:09 AM
So here it is, a lot of started projects and not any finished ones! I don't know what it is about painting buildings, but it takes me forever, so Southpaw is slow going. We've got some doodles, some Mignola worship, some anatomy studies and a Klimt masterstudy in it's infant stages.
Mumph
February 19th, 2009, 03:52 PM
Nice update!
Yeah iīm with eminkey2003 on the boobs, otherwise cool. On the first sketch his right hand and forearm looks very large in comparison to the rest of the body, his ear looks a bit small and thin. It also looks like he hasnīt got a tricpes (HIS right arm). Very nice studies! Southpaw is coming along nicely, just think about values so it doesnīt become flat. Some darker parts are needed I think.
eminkey2003
February 22nd, 2009, 05:10 PM
Super form in the body studies, lots of life in that Hellboy drawing (I'd like to see more lively sketches like that). Big-gun-guy looks pretty lively, but the soldier in the trenchcoat looks a little stiff, and so does the figure sketch below him.

Darker shadows looks good on Southpaw, proportions look a bit weird on Shit Ninja, and nice anatomy studies (all curves though, so it looks a little wiggly). Try some more interesting compositions though. These aren't grabbing me! You can really make an impact with an interesting composition. Here are some comic covers that I think have neat compositions: http://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/y-the-last-man

eminkey2003- You always give me good suggestions, thanks man!
Alm0st- Frank, thanks for the good crits, I'll watch out for head size. I think you're also picking my negligence in the composition department, as eminkey was talking about, so thanks for the heads up an that.
DeathChalupa- Thanks! Glad you stopped by :)
Here's some stuff I've been working on... sketchbook things and my very first sculpt. I did the sculpt in Zbrush and I started form a sphere. It was harder than I thought it would be, and I'm not really happy with the results...but I have done almost no artwork outside of 2 dimensions, period, so I guess I shouldn't expect to be good at it right off the bat.
As always crits and comments are muchly appreciated!

Really nice form here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=607073&stc=1&d=1235948223)!
I don't know anything about light and shadow, but it looks convincing. His left arm might cast a shadow on his body though. I believe Katie's left eye is smaller than the left though, and at this angle, you can't really blame that on foreshortening.

I love how fresh and clean your workspace is; mine is so cluttered. : /
The tank composition could still use more "oomph." Sometimes, try playing around with the elements of the picture in some thumbnail sketches before you do an illustration.
I don't have many crits for the self-portrait other than the ears look like they're parallel to the viewer. The form looks pretty firm, especially in the cheek creases.
Also, Bowie has a really tall forehead, ahahah.

Well I've been out the game to long, as they say. I've been super busy with other aspects of life namely making a website, doing some extra print design outside of work and putting in more hours on the mural at my friend's house. My revamped website (http://www.brnk.net/) got a redesign, a sketchbook blog (http://www.brnk.net/sketchbook/) (which will largely just mirror this thread) and my first bit of custom php! Coding is hard, kiddies.
SO... this update isn't nearly as big as it should be, considering so much time has passed since my last post. I've got to hit it with renewed fervor... right after I get back from my birthday weekend in Chicago! :D

The figure study is great, I like the colors. The toe looks a bit big and too round though. Are the legs a bit too long? or maybe thatīs because of the angle, iīm not sure. Maybe some more reds in the skin? I like the texture in the doodles.

Whoa, new page! To celebrate: a bunch of scans and some progress wips on my COW and demon collab w/ Frank.
Some thoughts: The demon digi paint still needs a face and some other details to distinguish him from your every-day, run of the mill Grim Reaper, even though I'm basing him partly on Samael, who is the grim reaper. He's going to get the face w/ the horns and animal nose in the sketch below him.
The COW creature need a head change, so his head doesn't look like an ass! It was supposed to be a bony ridge... but it looks like some butt cheeks! :asspat:
I really need to to figure out what to do with the back eye when my subject is in 3/4 view... I keep fucking it up and pinching the back eye all goofy (look at the scarred man doodle for proof).
Ok, that's all for now. I'll be back soon with more. Crits are always welcome!

May 13th, 2009, 04:22 PM
Cool concept, great idea for a body shape, but the pose is a little stiff and the left arm slices up the composition a bit. Also, shouldn't the light from the green plants change the color of the floor to a more green blue? I think the same may go for the purple light on the brown hair.
Mumph
May 17th, 2009, 04:52 PM
I like your concepts! The creature in the last one has a very funny expression (in a good way) :) but I think itīs very flat. Maybe some more variation in edge types and variation in value would help this. I agree with eminkey2003 about the arm. I think the pages from your sketchbbok are great, especially the head studies. So I've long felt that the way I was drawing torsos, pecs, abs and the like was too rounded and exaggerated, so today I finally sat down and did some torso studies. I played with definition and angularity... I thin I like the dude on the far left the best (he's no ref actually.) The two bald guys on the right's pecs are too short/sit too high and hogarth's big, rounded approach just isn't sitting right with me these days.

Jesus Food- Thanks mang! I love it when new people stop in and say hi. :)
eminkey2003- Thanks mucho emin! Her artwork is awesome, thanks for introducing me to her. That blog went right into my bookmarks :)
Here's the fruit of my recent labor... I went to a figure drawing co-op tonight and drew form the model for the first time in probably 3 years. It felt really good, but took me a while to get into the groove. I think the 15 min one that is in profile is the most successful and definitely the best likeness. I realized a few things tonight:
I need to do more studies of the figure with extreme foreshortening because it took me about 50% more time to block in the model when he was at an odd angle tonight.
I need to use line weight to convey mass much, much more effectively.
I need to make this a weekly thing!
Hope yall enjoy, C&C always welcome!
-Andy

Recheck the demon's left arm and hips. I think his hips are too short, and his arm has a few weird problems. Pretty nice form in the bag. Try some traditional media too! I've been doing it more often, since all I know is digital.

Yo! Itīs a nice idea to first do a value painting I think, will help you a lot when you start to color it. I like their expressions, nice job with that. I think you should play some more with composition, right now itīs pretty messy in the middle.
It looks like the woman is raising her legs, like they are levitating, is that on purpose? Maybe you could also work more with overlapping and stuff pointing out more :) I did a very quick paint-over to demonstrate what I mean, just a suggestion on what could be done, or something like it, some ideas.
Things I did: I rotated the womans feet, I made her left arm visible, I painted in the fat manīs arm, I rotated and extended the cap-manīs arm and extended his left leg/foot. I also drew in some trees in the foreground, I think that can help with atmospheric perspective and also it will give the felling of someone spying on them as the woman gives an impression of that already. I like this piece :)
On the second one, the forearms look a bit strange, like bowling pins, chech some ref. for that.
Deamon looking good, no crits and looking forward to the duckman.
The teabag painting is nice, maybe some different texture and just a hint of a back-ground would make it look more finished.
That last one is cool as hell! How do you create those? Very nice proportions and form.
Nice job my friend!

Awesome dude! Great progress. Really like your moleskin sketches...A LOT! Your figure drawings sketches are great. They also crack me up, I love how you added a speech bubble to convey how long each pose was. That's a nice creative touch!
Keep rockin dude!

Hi all. Sorry for going MIA. I wish I had a better excuse than artist's block/busy summer nights but I don't. Thanks for all your support and prodding (Frank and eminkey)!
I really should have more, considering how long I've been out of commission, but 'cest la vie (however you spell that... I took spanish :P)
OmertA-Thanks! Glad to bring the joy.
Mumph- Thanks for the very well thought out crits! You're the man. The animation is rotoscoped...meaning I shot myself in photobooth just using the built-in camera on my laptop at work, then imported the video to photoshop, converted the frames to layers, then made a hand drawn set of frames tracing over the video....it's very time consuming, but fun!
Peetaer-Thanks mang! I'm glad you stopped in and enjoyed yourself! :)
eminkey2003- I know it's been a long time, but I'm back!

Oh yeah, here's a bonus... it's a little motivational desktop I made. I figured it might be handy from someone else too.
