Thanks! I was a tad disappointed by the video, the video doesn't seem to catch the feelings of James Jeans concepts at all, and there was some poor animation performance aswell. Ah well, fair video anyways - was nice seeing Cocorosie getting some attention too.

yea, I agree, but thats always gonna be the case when you try to translate 2d art into a 3d film, especially when the 2d art is made with 2d art in mind, rather with the limitations of the 3d medium in mind.

Well,
that was sensational.

That must feel pretty rewarding.

the 3d stuff and animation wasn't great, but the design and concept work were very cool.

My first reaction to the concept art was "WOW!" Honestly though, viewing the finished animation, I felt it looked like an animatic that the final version would be based on. I thought there were some interesting ideas, but the execution was junior-college level. I am a huge admirer of James Jean. His concept artwork has an graceful, ethereal quality that the 3D absolutely failed to replicate. The way the joints of the girl folded instead of bending on the 3D model was really distracting too. The modeling had no subtlety either.

I find it hard to believe that Prada couldn't put a little more money into the project to bring it up to a professional level. How many $1700 handbags would you need to sell to afford that? If you have someone as talented as James Jean doing your concept art, it is a waste to skimp on the execution.

Beautiful film. Some weird distortions with the modeling but overall, it was a cool short. I wish more companies would use art like this instead of the regurgitated mainstream slop they dish out everyday.

Couldn't agree more.

Looks like Prada's trying to compete with Louis Vuitton, but they failed horribly.

Prada's audience must be heroin addicts. Thats what I get from this video, its for stoners.

I liked the idea of the bugs becoming shoes though, that was neat.

The whole of downtown Soho NYC Prada store is decked out in HUGE prints of his stuff, its very impressive. Liked the concepts but I wasnt really that fond of the animation though, it has a dated feeling to it. They did a better job animating Henry Darger's stuff for his documentary, but hey who gives a shit what i think? Me apparently.

That's what I was thinking. It looks like it's been rushed out the door. I cringed at the skinning (she's rail thin for crying out loud! This stuff is EASY!)... The hands... Good lord the hands... It's not hard to rig yourself effectors and auxiliaries to solve most of the problems in this animation. But then again, you'd need to know how animate hands too.
I think you guys are right though, perhaps this is the rough that has been put online?

P.S.: Aparently, demons (?) and their stuff don't have overshoot or need to settle BUT need to look like Pan in Pan's Labyrinth.

Takashi Murakami has been designing bags for Louis Vuitton anyway. I hope Prada won't ask him to design stuff for them...yech! I'm not a fan of this short, but they could have really done the whole thing better. it's all so so SUB-PAR!

check out James Jean's concept art for the video:

and i'm also thrilled they used CocoRosie's music too, it goes well with the video and probably with his own films, if James would ever do them himself. i'm a crazynuts cocorosie fan...

They should.

Good concept art, bad video. Maybe a 2D animation would have looked better?

yeah man pretty awesome concept ideas from James. Must be damn cool to have your artwork, and patterns on cloths. :)

The video was ok. I agree with Buckweisel, it might have been better with 2d animation. Also, compareing to the Louis Vuitton video(awesome by the way, i was totally engaged), Prada did not have a story which made it kinda boreing to watch, non the less very cool ideas and concepts.:)

I thought the cocorosie track was the best thing in the video :)

The Takashi Murakami video was strange, but It had more of a narrative than Trembled Blossoms and looked much more professional. I liked the girl, even if it felt a bit too much like a Totoro rip-off.

As others have said, using more 2d animation would have been a good idea, but it would have been more expensive and it looks like Prada was skimping as it is.
