View Full Version : DSG 1329: Creature: THE ALIEN "SPHINX" IS COMPLETELY FREAKISH

[ This is not a statue, mind you, but an actual creature... ]
[ ...And it should not just look like a human head attached to a lion's body. ]
[ The rough criteria is that the limbs are in a quadropedal configuration... ]
[ ...And that the head will seem more like that of a biped. ]

Plasma: I nice job, only thing I dont know about is the back right foot of the creature, is it like a pointy stump? or recoiling? maybe its just me, I like his chin, and the tattoo.
Apoc: For being sick thats some good work, nice rendering.Get well soon brother, and dont get too drunk ;)
BitJockey: your guy looks smooth, I think your on the right track, a little more anatomy wouldnt hurt, keep it up.
Naastika: cool idea, I like the horn type deals on the head.
ConCrete:Nice work, those colors are real nice.
Gentrifier: Not bad, just watch the anatomy of the extra arm on the far side, maybe put an indication of an elbo
Ink Ronin: nice character development, vary nice earthy feel to him. I like the face a lot.
Here is mine , I dont have a lot of time lately , so I crammed this guy together a little too fast, but it was fun. Back to animating 2d cartoons :(
Tweening is a mother F#*!er
Sorry William

about 15-20 mins. Since I had no idea as to what i was gonna do, i wanted to concentrate on establishing a good silhouette before I moved in on the details. I think this approach worked pretty well for me. Looking forward to doing more DSG. haven't been here in a while :)

Hi-I'm new to CA and this is my first effort for the DSG. 1.5 hours.

Glottis – For 20 minutes that very nice. A concise shadow would really attach him to the ground. And build the composition.
Plasma Ernst – The anatomy is good, the variation of texture and posture is great and the face is very interesting. Nicely done. Next step, colorization, AHHHH!
Apocalypse Rex – Funny, Geiger is hunting you down as we speak. Try using a third point perspective system; it makes a flat background far more dynamic with little to no work on your part. The tactile nature you achieved in mimicking alien is wonderful.
Bit Jockey- Soft edge brushes are the devil. Use opacity to control your softness and hardness. I used a 50% brush and lots of very bad color theory to get my rendering. The curves are dynamic though.
Naastika - Interesting creature. Drop the soft brushes and draw me some kind of environment. AHHH! Environments, BORING!
ConCrete – Your use of texture brush is flattening, figure that one out fast. Also get some blues into those shadows and get a better idea of the surface quality of your…well, surfaces.
Gentrifier – Creepy, very nice. You chop at the edge of your figure with the eraser and it really flattens him out. Leaving some soft edges tricks the eye into seeing a more three dimensional creature, the black outline also takes away form its dimensionality, wonderful use of elephant reference though.
Ink-Ronin – Diversify that color palette! Get angry and messy. And render in blues and reds and yellows. Pick a light source and its direction and use color theory to make it shine. You would be amazed how color can truly round out any piece even if used bombastically.
Arteater – Thanks for the crit. Dynamic pose that builds your character and gives us a reference. Soft edges are the DEBIL! Good anatomy, turn up the color on that one and your in business.
Slugman – Your silhouette is complicated but it is not dynamic. Think of your work as an abstract painting or drawing. Draw your character rearing back or jumping at the ‘camera’ and use Gestalt Theory to really intrigue your viewer.
Cynbad – A wonderful first DSG. Good anatomy, your line is clean and readable. Time to paint it all pretty in Photoshop.
William B. Hand is super thankful in this thread apparently.

Had another one yesterday, but it turned out looking like a demented mutant manticore, so I took another swipe at it... Looks a little less "alien" than I was going for, but that's the way it inked up.
Under an hour, Pitt grayscale brush pens...

William B Hand -
If it is not too much to ask could you do a walk through of your work on this one or maybe the next post?
I will thank you for it. Like 5 times.

Apocalypse Rex- not rubbish! Dunno if alcohol will help a sore throat though...
William B Hand- the polka dots definitely add that extra special something!
bitjockey- really digging the rendering of this one, it has this kind of fine-art sort of creepiness to it I think

PS I'm with ConCrete, I really dig your rendering style William, do you start with a sketch or go straight into the computer? Walk through!

silentbrain - Awww... I love that little guy! Really palpable sense of form with such minimal brush-work. (thx about the polkas!)
ConCrete & Dead Clown - Well, thanks guys! This pic is just straight Photoshop (any version would do). I went ahead and made a little walkthrough for you, as I actually happened to have taken snaps as I worked on this one. Go figure. I was unable to have it linked on this thread, but go to my sketchbook thread, and you'll find it there. I hope you like!

Wow, its down to earth, really straight forward. You were a traditional painter before photoshop. I am guessing oils and airbrush. Thanks btw.

I'm very late... well, I dunno about alien and freakish, my creature ended up being a catwoman, it seems... animal anatomy is a formidable opponent for me, I just put some color without deep thinking...

I know it's a bit late but i worked on it earlier and didn't put it up. also, does working on this for about 2-3 hours still count as a sketch?
