The last two ones are digital caricature experiments after watching too much Joe Bluhm..

Another Starbucks Lifesketch from today, my Hand and a girl. After messin around with my Wacom for months and seeing Wes' pencil rendering in his SB i decided to spend my time with my pencil rather than stylus... so, if anyone knows good exercises and tips for pencil-rendering.. don't be afraid to share ;-) :medusachow:

Hey Kfeeras thanks for visiting my sketchbook! I am glad that you liked my stuff!
About your question though I don't really have an appropriate answer. I am kind of lazy so most of the time I just drew some random stuff and I thought it woks. But than came a period with no decent progress at all. Being lazy for a bit more time one day(before 2-3 months) I decided to force my lazy self to draw something challenging every day. It was hard because despite my laziness I am kind of inpatient. But with a little practice I began to focus on my work more and more and discovered that patience and concentration are vital. I also rediscovered the joy of drawing through my barbarian methods for improvement haha. I don't really know how but it worked. So my advice is to look at your stuff and see for yourself what more do you want to achieve. What is missing. Than grab the pencil or whatever you like and try to make it happen. Use reference and explore the works of your favorite artists. When you don't know what to do just grab an anatomy book and make some studies. It is kind of refreshing for me. And I have to say that the first 3 sketches in your sb have a pretty dynamic feel to them. Keep making those they help a lot and look great. Hope I was helpful.

Cool start. Try to see the shapes underneath, not just the edges of them on the surface (i.e, the lines.) Although, it's a good idea to practice breaking out of them with countour line drawings and such.

@horsey: thx!! it took me aroung 110 days, i was going to do one evey day but i wanted to put in more work than an hour in a few of these so it took me a little longer. also thhat last one took around 6 hrs in 3 days. i did these to get used to digital painting.

@alvukovic: thanx mate!!

Hey thanks for taking a look at my sketchbook,

you mean the Tauren Hunter with his pet? or the Paladin whos about to kick ass? or the mecha suit? the paladin and the tauren was drawn a year ago but i didn't felt good enough to color them because i wasn't that expreienced with Photoshop. now i think i'm going to give it a try

and i like your sketchbook! especially the prelast selfportrait great job on that! keep on drawing and drop by a second time if you feel like!

May 20th, 2008, 09:55 AM
Hey, your pencils are getting better! Just remember to think about the subject you are drawing in 3D, also, be careful to mmix rendering-styles, like hatching and tone. Of course that's not a rule, look at Koppas work, he is a master! In general, you should carefully analyse the rener-habits of your favorite artists and try to learn some technqie from them.

Anyways, thanks for stopping by my book, Ialso like what I see here :)

I see it's going pretty good , one thing , on the drawings , you need to have a variation of line , hard edges and soft edges , that tells the viewer where is the light coming from and where are the darker parts . Good luck on your 100 ap project :P

August 19th, 2008, 05:43 PM
hey i like your work, i can tell that you put a lot of time ad effort in it and that you are enjoying what you are doing!
my advices would be to tighten up you shading, when you crosshatch try not to be too criss crossy. maybe just put in lines going ain one direkion and if you need it darker put another set of lines in a 90 degree angel on it. if you do this for you hole picture it will look much cleaner than when you just scribble around.
as for the last portrait i think it looks a bit muddy because of the grey shadows, try to put in a bit color (maybe bounce light from a blue carpet or a scecondary dimmed light source? just to have not grey shadows.

my favourite is yor very first picture (youra vatar) its really outstanding :)
dont stop posting!

Kfeeras
August 19th, 2008, 05:57 PM
wow thankyou minze, you're right, it is muddy. i think i'll start doing more sp's again, it helps me improve my digi painting!

The portraits in posts #1 and #45 seem to be the strongest work in here, with the anatomy studies taking a quick 2nd. Try and apply the same precision you use in these two studies and the things you're learning from the anatomy studies towards your quicker sketches and no-ref work! Definitely lots of potential so get to using it all, man! Keep it up :)

here's a few shots from my trip to croatia where i got the chance to draw a few live caricatures of patient people. needed around an hour for one. was the first time i did a live drawing for somebody. i see room for a ton of corrections but they were happy so i am, too. ;-):lifedrawing:

Nice of you to drop a comment in my SB, and it is a very useful one!
I am taking your advice to heart, and I am going to draw my heart out haha.

Already noticing that when you go back and forth from traditional to digital and the other way around that the one improves the other and vice versa, just like your saying.

As for the podcast, very nice! Im at work right now, but as soon as I get home I am going to listen to it. I'm curious as to what it will be about!
Thanks for that as well!

You are making some great strides as well, and you have a very nice SB here. Really like the caricatures that you do haha! Good luck to you!

Superb superbiness! Really great idea.

Christoffer
August 24th, 2008, 04:19 PM
Oh nice! I've always wanted to do a gory self portrait myself. I know you're already done with it and you're probably sick of putting further work into it, but I'd add more detail to the muscles so you can see the fibres and blood vessels. The shape of the bone above the eyeball could use some more work as well. That's all I can come up with but whatever. Good job anyway. Perhaps we'll be seeing more gore portraits from now on? :)

Lakka
August 24th, 2008, 04:27 PM
Hey, I realy like that selfportrait, as it is very consistent with the quality of things. Basically yes you could go in and add alot of detail and so on, but right now it looks nice for the fact that you have not overdone anyt single parts!

Anyhoo, the last page had some nice stuff going on, I think that as of now, humans are one of your strong points, which ofcourse is great.

I'd like to see you do some nitpickish images, almost blantant copies of refs, and spend a good amount of time on them. It really, really helps. The ref can be from life or a photo, but the main thing is time, spend some of that on it, and you fill find the all around quality of your work going up nicely.

Keep working! Looking good! :)

Kfeeras
August 24th, 2008, 04:59 PM
Yoooo Folks!

Thanks for the comments!

@pijus: thx dude. you stuff is great for your age, but i already wrote you that ;-)

@Christoffer: No doubt theres a lot of room for further work, but theres so much other stuff i'd like to do. i have no great knowledge in painting detailed muscles and fibers and fleshy stuff, maybe i'll revise that image when i studied muscle and flesh painting a little more. i still hope that the BODYWORLDS expo will someday return to germany, so i can take reference photos there ;-) thx for commenting! and yes youll see lots of more stuff from me, not only sp's, starting with this post.

@Lakka: thx for the compliment. that is something that i will definately do! Thanx for remembering. I'll do a bargue copy if i find reference material.

SOOOOO. Let me say one thing:
:ai: :al: :ao: :av: :ae: :at: :ay: :ap: :ao:

one thing i wanna do more in future is combine my drawing with graphic elements and typo.

one reason is: making this sketchbook more interesting to look at.
the other is: practising graphic design. since i will study communications design from october on.

this way i have another use for my sketches ;-)

So, please let me know what you think about this attempt. It's in its pre alpha now ;-)

thanks for lookin!!

August 25th, 2008, 09:01 AM
hey there :) nice to see some more germans here :)

ok now to your sb... I think your sketches have som estrong lines but they come along rather messy than controled... maybe you should try not to rush while doing them and keep an eye on linequality and rendering thechniques like hatching...

to your digitals... they seem good so far, nice varety indeed, but tehy seem to lack values!! watch out to have them balanced better, cos the darks and the whites seem just too strong for my tase :)

however, there is improvement, so keep on posting :) I'll watch'ya!!

bye
Diana

Kfeeras
August 25th, 2008, 06:25 PM
@derriere: thx man!

@lilou: thank you for the crits. i followed your suggestion and this evening i just drew random organic forms really slowly and watching my line drawing (see this update). i must say that i think thats a good practice to improve line quality and rendering. theres still a long way to go but i'll keep workin at it.
the other thing about lacking values: do you mean the contrasts are too low or too high? too extreme? more variation? thankyou for stopping by!! :steph:

random stuff no reference. about 2-3 hrs work, format A3. the paintings are pretty rushed, only kinda tryout.

lilou
August 26th, 2008, 07:41 AM
glad you took my advice seriously :) the new drawings are way better... and I'm not sayind rough fast sketching isn't good you can make it belong to your style, its just that I think your drawings will benefit if you practice controled lines too :)

about the values, yes thats exactly what I ment... the contrast is way too high for my taste, makes your pieces look artificial....

oh and I really have to say that those "things" you draw in your last update are...scary and pretty much original, wished I could let my mind go off like this... I'm too much bound to, you know.... normal stuff... so, respect from me :)

bye

Some really nice stuff here man. The first two cafe sketches are tremendous.
The gory sp is a nice idea, on a critical note, the face is looking quite flat, same in some of the sp's, some skin shading practice would be good.

Kfeeras
August 26th, 2008, 01:06 PM
@lilou: thanks again for the advice. I think i'll keep rendering practises and studies for anatomy separated, because i don't want to spend that much time on a hand ;-)

@nightblue: wow, means really much to me, thanks for the comment and the advice. Ill keep it in mind

@jharford: thanks! yes you're right, skintones are such a wide area to study, i'll definately attack it one day.

thrilafrommanila
August 26th, 2008, 09:35 PM
wow, you draw some really interesting monsters. i dig the eyeball one.

perhaps some advice i can give is to experiment more with your colors. for example, your two face self portrait:

use some more tones in the flesh and also in the muscle. your skin is not neccessarily composed of just tones of peach, there are also reddish browns and yellows within it. also, if you wear a particular colored shirt (like blue) the color ends up reflecting into your skin and changing the tones to a more colder spectrum.

other than that i really enjoy your sketchbook. hope to seen even mor cool monsters and portraits :D

Your productivity floors me! And that diversity, too. We've got creature designs, enviros, face and hand studies and what else here! You're definitely not one who gets stuck in a comfort-zone, huh? I really like that, I hope you'll keep exploring different subjects and styles!

That being said, I don't have any crits for now. But I'll be back so see some more sweet stuff from you!

@amarryth: Thanks alot! I gotta confess that i often clean up my pencils manually in photoshop a little, and also apply a sharp edges filter. Makes it look more like the original, especially when you have a scanner that sucks donkey ass like mine ;-) But youre right, the effort is best seen on drawings.

@algenpfleger: thank you very much!! Its the same for me with your name ;-)

@jedininjaman: thanks mate!

First of all, sorry for the crappy quality. I bought a huge A3 Sketchbook and I cant fit it on my scanner. I can scan the single sheets in two parts when drawing of loose paper, but that method is hard with a big sb. I used my digi camera instead.

YAY my Communications-Design Class started today. I'm at the Hochschule München, it's a Bachelor-Course and its gonna take 3 1/2 years.

The last is 60 min snow landscape.

The snowy rock stuff is good. The other environments need work I guess, it's really hard, I understand. Sometimes I find drawing them first gives a better grasp on everything. These legs sketched are probably going to help a lot with your figure stuff. good work

sinneart
October 21st, 2008, 08:36 AM
Fantastic sketchbook! You have a natural eye for proportion, perspective and lighting - nice stuff.

My only general crit is regarding your basic line quality... seems that you have that signature "chicken scratch/peck" habit/method (that pretty much all artists start out with, I think) when putting down your initial sketches... Try to focus on making every line count - make as long and as graceful (varying your line weight to show light/shadowed areas) as you can. Don't let your pencil leave the paper. Try a few excersizes by doing that - you may find out something new!

Kfeeras
October 21st, 2008, 01:31 PM
@josef: ok i promise to add some hard edges on the next painting ;-)

@wookiedabo: thanks!

alriiiight guys!! I bought a brand new small moleskine and the cheapest colored pencils i could find. i'll fill this sketchbook with memory drawings from people i see in coffeeshops or on the train.

I saw a video of Stephen Silver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bUmeswKSe0) where he told that you get most out of lifedrawing by drawing once, turning the paper, and them drawing the same thing from mind. I did this during the last lifedrawing in class and i think its a great thing to do.

I still remember the five poses I've drawn last monday and i think ive learned more than in all the sessions before. I drew every pose twice that way. I someone wants to see them i can post them but they're all very sketchy 2 minute drawings and not soo pleasing to the eye.

I decided to change my starbucks drawing routine a little. I used to draw the people while looking at them all the time. This time I observed first and then sketched from memory.

This way I am forced to simplify and caricature a lot more, cause I can't memorize all the tiny details.

The result are the first two images you see here. The rest is doodle from mind while in class.

Now this is a refreshing thread. It's great to see work like this...really...just nice. You capture likenesses extremely well which is definitely something I struggle with when I'm even just doing normal portraits.
Be careful that you don't just change the values in the tones you use in these painting to add depth and shading, try to sneak some more color variation in, it will really add life to the images.
Awesome work. Thank you for being different!

the blue and orange mountain study is my favorite thing on this page!

the most recent sketch is very accurate, but i think the strokes compete with the form that the shading tries to create, it would be better to lay them along the contour of the shape you are molding

cheers>:D

These are two drawings that could have been pushed much further. Refine the rendering on the first one, push it to as finished a level as possible. Match the tones to the best of your ability.

Adding darker tones creates depth. Even the smallest additions will change the perspective drastically. With the ritual guy, darken the tones around his waist, it will bring the bowl thing (forgot what to call it, haha) forward, and just make the image much more three-dimensional.

Don't be happy with doing lots of fast stuff. Do quick studies, along with pieces that you push as far as you possibly can. Don't be afraid to spend 10-60 hours, heh.

:)

Hey risa, thats ok, you'll find fans in no time!

Max, thanks so much for the comment. I took your advise and continued working on my "Bargue" Drawing ;-) After scanning I figured i could go a good step darker on the face, and its something different to really take time on a drawing!! I've spent another hour or so on it, thats my current stage:

586702

I think I'll start another one, just this time with an accurate drawing. Messed up this one, the features are a little off. I have to find out how to "overcome" the paper texture, will do a little research on that!! Thanks again max, you really helped me.
Nice post in the cssg by the way! Hope to see more!!

With those sketches, It seems that you need to shrink the head. Even if its bigger than what you see, go ahead. (I'm talking in a sense of realism.)

Be more carefull with those planes also.

Keep attacking at it!

I think you need to clean up the lines man (although maybe it's the coffee :P).

Just slow down, relax. Observe. Perhaps move your hand over the surface where the line will go, then when you're ready, make the line. Lots of blind contour drawings would help, too. See how much of a life drawing you can make with one line

Looking real good the sketches from starbucks, out of interest how much time do you spend drawing each person and have you ever had the awkward situation of someone noticing you were drawing them and confronting you about it, negatively?
