Great sketch book. I particularly like the recent landscapes. Some of those mountains are beautiful. That last portrait is good too.

Hey there,

Very nice sketchbook, I really like your life drawings and also enjoy the enviros. Two crits regard post #246:
The asscrack of the lady come too high and is to straight and dark. It should get less obvious the further up you go.
And in the first enviro the reflections of the trees is black, though the trees are lighted. Their colour reflects, too.

Cheers

Cool sketchbook man, don't forget that saturation usualy goes up with light and down with shadow + pure whites or blacks are very rare especially on characters, unless you have a strong spotlight directly aimed at you while standing in a dark room sort of scenario.

EDIT
(This was a bit of a joke, i should have explained better, Basically the idea was that all(most?) 2D paintings are "faking how stuff looks" because they represent a 3D world on a flat surface fooling the eye, so i coudent follow Kfeeras advice on this one unless i decided to become a sculptor heh. Im just sticking this in to make sure no one gets the wrong idea Kfeeras is awesome and gave me some great advice!)

Thanks for your Crits on my Image Kfeeras they were to the point and very helpful, though, i had to chuckle when you said

"My suggestion is to put the time in studies and drawing on paper, rather than spending hours on trying to fake how stuff looks"

I would have to give up painting to follow this advice, sculpting might work though :p

I think with that Damien Rice piece, if you had varying textures between the black and brown spaces.. like maybe doing the black background a bit more solid it would give a bit more hierarchy, as it seems there's a bit of battle with what to look at.. and it would give it more of a contrast punch.. plus, make the beautiful texture in the brown watercolour of the jacket stand out more :)

Those studies are awesome too, you sure are producing a lot. I loved the top ones here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=801206&d=1255387033), the exploring line describes the form so well!

So maybe some Monkey Island from you too? ;)

Nice self-portrait, man! Just some nitpicking: Left eye isn't polished enough. I guess it could use some flattening and simplification. And both upper and lower eyelids looks somehow too emphasized and unnatural. The nose is too flat (okay, maybe you have such a flat one :P) The contour line around the right nostril is too strong, The shading of the upper lip and the area abowe that is a bit strange, maybe too bright. And... that's all.
Your studies are still awesome.

monotony

great work and improvement since I've been around last time.
the "house"- drawing and -painting look tops!
and I like your sp as well. I'd prefer it if you used a bit less of the brightest highlight though. It looks a bit like an overexposed photo could look like. maybe save the brightest light for fewer and smaller spots. the valuerange looks very good though and it might just be personal preference.
keep it up!

Nice, your works show good progress, you seem to accomplish more by fewer pencil lines than at the beginning. But please don't sacrifice drawing for some humbug programmin' :)
I've got just one question regarding your moleskine: how do you avoid smearing the pencil everywhere on the previous pages when you draw on top of them? You put a piece of paper underneath or something (which doesn't work for me) Or maybe you don't? :D Or am I applying too much force and FURY into my pencil?

Kfeeras
January 2nd, 2010, 11:56 AM
@tmth

well, programming and designing usability is kind of my other passion, since i'm an IT-Freak. I still draw a lot in my sketchbook, but didnt get to do much painting. A few more weeks then I'll have time to put in the hrs on my wacom and i'm going to start oil painting.

About the MS: I use an HB mechanical pencil 0.5 diameter, it smears but not that much. I buy the Moleskines with the heavy sketching paper and i don't push that hard on the pages. I don't put paper under the pages, it would thicken the book too much. I already have so much postcards, businesscards and shit in the pocket on the last page.
Oh and if you would see the SB live you would see that it smears, but I dont really care that much ;-) Thanks for the comment!

I'm doing a painting right now for my 1000th Post! Its a green lady portrait, the WIP is in the WIP/Crit section

take care!
