A student of mine asked me to color this beautiful linework as part of a Photoshop demo.
I wish the linework and concept were my own, but my professional work is in another area altogether.
This was my first chance to do something concept-related...I hope to do some concepts of my own soon, but the time just hasn't been there.
This color work was great fun, and I humbly submit it for your feedback.

Another reason I'm posting this is to see if anyone can tell me who the original line/concept artist is...I'd like to contact them.
The student that gave me the piece said that it was posted online as part of a contest...anybody have more information?

C&C on the color work is welcome...

Isn't the thumb on the wrong side?

Besides that, I really like it. The colors really compliment the sketchyness of it. It seems on the face, though, that since there are so many lines there should be at least that many shadows. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like it is too uniform throughout the whole composition. Same on the clothes. I love the colouring on the hands though, very nice job! :)

Hope I helped.

Hey, good job man, like your non-standard comicbook coloring aproach to it!

As far as some more info on the piece is concerned:

This is a panel of a Tombraider/Witchblade page that was published by Topcow a couple months ago, drawn by one of my alltime favorite artists, Michael Turner. Check out some of his latest stuff over at www.aspencomics.com , and surf to www.topcow.com to visit the site of tthis fine comicpublisher....:D

And w hile your at it, check my site www.rhemrev.tk aswell, alot of similar styled linework can be found there, I would love to see you color something of mine sometime....:D

Good luck,

-Edwin

Hey, thanks for the feedback. And thanks for Michael Turner's name! It's funny (and a little embarrassing) that I wouldn't know him...he seems to be quite a star in the sequential art world. And what lovely line work! I'm a big fan now.

That thumb...I know what you mean...the first impression is that it's on the wrong side, or that the arm belongs to the guy getting squeezed. I didn't help that any by making both sleeves white...I should change one of the sleeve colors.

But there are a couple of other things adding to the confusion. I think the folds of the cloth make the arm seem like a left arm instead of a right. And the bone is really not right...it should be the radius crossing over...not a straight bone as shown. That might be a bit much to ask of a sequential artist, but not someone like Michael Turner. He's got some other nice anatomical details...that fibrous band around the wrist for example (extensor retinaculum, I think). The bones should probably be right in a piece like this.

Then again, maybe that's just foolish consistency...
