Sooooooo, Architecture, yeah!!
.................................................. ............................
Update: Started entering CHOW :D
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: Decided to start using my tablet, specially since i have to return the one i have now by end of year (since it isn't actually mine) and i thought it would be good to be a bit more expirienced when i get a new one.
oh yeah, i'm also a 3rd year architecture student now XP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
n00b! lol, wut? a new guy's sketchbook
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello everybody, i'm new here at CA.org, even though i've been lurking for a couple of months now. i thought that it would be a good idea to finally start my sketchbook here, even if it's not at the level of some of the people around here... but who cares, i'm here to get some C & C so i can start getting better n_n
i'm 20, and i'm currently studying to be an architect. i'm on my third year, and i'm quite unhappy with the level of education we're given in my University, at least drawing/painting-wise. I decided to start to learn on my own, since i want to get to a level in which i can get to help my classmates... plus, it's always good to improve your skills :P
Edit: lately i'm into watercolors, so i'm just focusing on that leately
so, here's some things i've been doing
just did this last night, i'm happy with the overall design. as soon as i get a tablet and some skills at digital painting, i'm redoing it with color

I'm not one to give you a lot of help, but I will say this: The work you've posted thus far, mainly the anatomy studies, are very, very blocky and sharp. Take the pictures from your 12:41 post today; all the arms have way too many lumps that don't exist, as well as much too extreme curves. The first picture in that post is supposed to be arms, but I never would have guessed what they were if you hadn't told me. Google pictures of bodybuilders (if you want to focus on the more extreme musculature) and try drawing them. One thing you'll notice is that there are hardly any sharp angles; everything flows smoothly. This site (http://www.criticalbench.com/male-bodybuilders.htm) has a lot of pictures and videos of male bodybuilders, you might gain something from sketching some of them.
As for female faces, I'm not good at them either, but I did notice there's almost no facial features other than the eyes, nose, and mouth. Take a look at yourself in the mirror; do you see simply these three features and nothing else, or these three, and shadows and highlights everywhere? I know of a website that has tips for this kind of problem, but I can't find it right now. If I do, I'll post it. An alternative is to go to Youtube.com and find videos of female bloggers. Sketching their faces will give you practice in the composition and expressions of the face, a big bonus if you're looking to get into the professional gig.
Now to go practice what I preach...

thanks for the tips =3, though i'd like to say that i never said those were arms, so you did understand it ;D (though, once i draw hands on them it will be easier to understand)
some, if not every sharp/block thingie you mentioned is on purpose. i'll try to not do them that way once i start drawing from life (no time at the moment).
once again, thanks for the crits :D

Good work on those studies. Watch the placement of the eyes on your heads. you drew the one in side view in the last post correctly, but in 3/4 view they are to close to each other. When the head turns the placement of the eyes remains the same. Also look more carefully at how the eyes sit in the eye socket and what's happening around them. keep it up!

wow i love the design elements you have got going on ... as far as your graphite drawings go i would really work on loosening
up your line ,work on some large paper using your whole arm to do gestures
do some still life perhaps try and use the full range of values as much as possible
i really like that painting of the Lion but i think it could use some more saturation it would read better
looking good keep it coming !

yeah, i feel the same about the lion, but there were some problems with it since the beggining (mainly due to the paper being too thin) and i just didn't have it in me to work the way i should have.

i thought it would be a good idea to post the progress of my latest work.
in this one i thought it would be good to use real life reference, and did some changes to it.
in any case, here are the steps i used. did the outlining of the facial shapes and the most noticeable shadows.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b266/Mortos_der_souleater/Art/001.jpg
i added the skintone, made from titanium white, gambodge, rose and burnt siena. used the siena plus gambodge for the colar, just 'cause i wanted something warm. did a light wash on both and added various layers with clear water to soften it so there aren't edges

The faces you draw are very lovely and I am jealous of those building. Your paintings are nicely blended but have little contrast and look a bit washed out. I would recommend adding more layers to a few you really like and punch up the color and contrast. I am sure they would look amazing! (Ignore this if it's just the scanner/camera eating all your color away.)
Muscari
June 11th, 2009, 08:53 PM
@jjacks: while the camera does fade some of the color, i do make it a bit on the ligther side (specially the last one), but i'm planning on realying solely on watercolors for the next, so it will sport some more contrast in the colors
used charcoal for the hair, 6b for the darker areas and 2b for the lighter ones, and faded it with cotton. also used tracing paper to amoid smudges.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b266/Mortos_der_souleater/Art/005.jpg

Nice watercolors you got there. I especially like what you've done with the lion portrait. Zhanglu study is also quite nicely rendered.
One slight suggestion, though - I find it difficult to see your images clearly on my monitor. Try and bump up the contrast in photoshop, so it looks closer to what it does in actuality. Some of the pics are just doing your art an injustice.

gotta agree with that comment. i think i rushed the work, so that's why i didn't pay attetion to the small details that make a face make sense and be pleasing to the eye.
in any case, felt a little hyped about starting classes yesterday, and thought that it would be a good moment to give my dusty tablet a try (beside, i've being watching zhanglu a lot xP). here's my wip:

for now, i'll just start putting a wip every now and then

Hi there. If you want it to be less fuzzy, try turn the hardness of the brush to 100%.
Good work so far. More anatomy and figure practise is what I suggest. Have you got Loomis's books?
CHOW entry looks nice!

you do some nice improvement here.
Well try to use hard edged brushes with 100%(as scorpion007 said)and opacity(100%)+shape dynamics & opacity in pen pressure
Your works look blurry,so i guess thats the problem. I dont know if you use the smudge tool, but if you do, better leave it and start smoothing things up by picking the next color using ALT+click.
Keep up the studies, you are doing great and if you keep up,you will improve even faster :D
See ya and thnx for stopping by my sketchbook

Yeah, not to repeat everyone else under the sun, but the bluriness in your works is really taking away from them.
Waaaay back on page 1, in post 24, you first start messing with your tablet. Looking at those, I would say that making them darker, and using darker lines would do a great deal for clarity. The third picture down in that post is what I'm taking about, it's much clearer.
You also, looking at that post, seem to have a habit of making the outer most line, or "outline" really dark. Is that a personal style choice? What you might want to do is go over your works and make all the lines that dark, not neccessarily to keep them that way, but to get some inital clarity.
Continuing on, your people sketches are good, and get better as you go along. There's flaws here and there, but I'm not going to give a detailed going over for such older things.
On page 2, post #34, the portrait has an amazing profile. I always suck at profiles myself, but that is really well done. The ear is good too, usually ears look off or out of place, but yours is excellent, as well as the curve of the jawline. I think that the shape of the head looks a little off, possibly, but mostly that would be because the neck looks far to skinny, maybe because you make it taper off at the end.
For the really big paper, one way to illistrate the size in your photo is to have, say, a quarter there, for size comparison. It also wouldn't be bad to go into an image editing program and tweak the photo to make the lines you're drawing darker so that we can see them when you post the pics up, I know it's hard for me to see some of your stuff, which makes it hard to comment.
In posts 40 and 41, you have some nicely shaded faces, but the perspective/proportions seem to be off. I suppose it could be a choice of style, since the eyes in both pictures seem to have exaggerated lids, and the noses both seem longer then maybe usual.
The finished portrait in 46 is awesome, I really like the eye on the right. I think the one on the left is a little off, maybe due to the way the shadows interact with it, but the nose and lips look great. I do think you could have added some detail to the hair, but it's okay the way it is. More shadows along the garment covering her neck would be appropriate, considering the harshness of the other shadows in the work.
Post #51 would be easier to tell the changes if posted side by side with the old works. I think I actually liked the lighter shadows on her face more, but without a side by side, it is hard to compare.
Post 53, I feel personally like the portrait is good from a proportions standpoint, but that some blending of the shades would really help, and take the "graininess" out (unless of course you're after that effect.)
The portrait in 61 is way, way clearer then your other digital drawings posted after. Whatever your technique is there, try applying it to other works as well.
I'm getting lazy now, so I'll cease with the commentary until later. I hope this didn't sound too harsh, I'm impressed with alot of your faces, and you certainly do them waaaaaaay better then me. I think my comments will be useful, and you're doing great. Keep it up!
Also feel free to drop by my sketchbook. I love advice, and I could certainly use some for my faces.

Comercial modules/sale kiosks that I designed for the previous Town Square Project. They're suppossed to go underneath the wooden structures. They were conceived to be as cheap as posible (welded steel tubes and wooden poles mostly) and capable of being folded for transportation. The cover is a metal sheet (don't know the english word) that can be painted to meet the requirements of the area.
