First- I'd just like to say thank you for not placing the character right in the middle of the page... so many people do that, it drives me nuts... very static.
Second- I think you should pick a definate light source. I'm liking the orange you have on his cloak that is very nice. I think though, if you brought some more of the background color into the figure itself it might help him "fit in" more with the background. I usually as a rule of thumb try to include at least some of my background color in my figure or object. It adds harmony to the whole piece and makes everything belong.
Finally- I think that you might consider maybe dulling down your reds, yellows and oranges in the background they compete in my opinion with the character itself. When I think of death, I think of a dark slimy gloomy character that rides the shadow and is just out of reach. lol that's just me though

All in all the piece has a very nice feel to it and I believe it conveys what it is you are trying to get across. Great work! keep em coming!

The best way to learn colors is to study the masters and read. Color is in my opinion the hardest aspect of painting. anyone can splash color on a page, but it takes real skill to make it all come together in harmony. I still have trouble with color and i've been at this for awhile. As far as a way to learn color, like I said the best way is to just read and study the old masters. get a color wheel and look how color relationships work.

NEVER SAY THAT! If i've learned one thing in school and in the life and it's this: Nothing is accomplished by putting yourself down. Nobody is better than anyone else, their art is just different than that person's. Anyone who would say that their work is better than yours is an arrogant piece of crap. LOL Imagination is not a inherrited thing, it's a learned trait like all other learned traits, the best way to improve that skill is to practice. However, reading some books never hurt anyone. I would pick up this book in paticular to help you on your journey.

Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain (for creativity)
Spectrum 9 (friggin amazing artists)
John Singer Sargent (just eye candy... one hell of a painter)
there are many more, but you can find out for yourself.... that's half the fun! :)

Remember this: Roads are for Journies, not destinations.

take care friend,
