Topic: Power Boots
Background: Yep you heard it right, power boots is this weeks' topic :)
This topic encompasses all the footwear you can think of: boots, shoes, sandals, toenailpolish etc etc (well, maybe not the last one but it might inspire something even stranger...). The idea is that these boots grant its wearer extra powers. What powers these are is completely up to you as the designer.
There is no specific location or time frame attached to the topic, so it may be magical boots made by fearies or sci-fi magnetic boots to walk around in space. As long as they give its owner something extra beside simple footwear its fine.
I was going to say we're talking about a pair of boots here, and not just a single one, but then I realised that there might be alien races out there with only one or a whole range of feet. No restrictions there then, except if you go for humans you have to draw the complete pair and not just one. Adding the user is optional but not necessary.
Brief:
1. Design and draw Power Boots!
2. Draw the complete pair...or quartet or..well check above :)
3. They must grant the wearer extra power beyond being mere footwear.
4. That's it... now draw!
Deadline: Tuesday Februari 5 2008 (Since the usual deadline is a little messed up, I added a whole extra day. The next topic will be up earlier so the deadlines will be on my sunday again, which makes it easier for me to close them on time and put the poll up)

Sounds like a fun topic, i'll see what I can cook up.
Q: Instead of painting the pair of boots, can we do a front and back view of one boot?

sounds absolutely interesting :D

January 30th, 2008, 10:22 AM
Legato: Good to hear that :)
Epias: Would be cool to see you finish something for this :P
Timothee: You can do that, but I still want to see the two boots together as well, even if it's just a small sketch in the corner (I hope it'll be more than that though :)) Imagine them as being an image of an artifact you can find in dungeons in games, like gathering weapons and stuff.

I'm contemplating either spray on shoes of some sort (with presently un-thought of power) or 23rd century ruby slippers which teleport along with some other features. :)

I would like to try this...
but it would have to be in straight up Pencil and Eraser style drawing...
Is that allowed, or would I have to use some painting or digital method to make it all fancy-like??
yoitisi
January 31st, 2008, 11:36 AM
LilAppleSauce: Pencils and erasers are not a problem, although you might lose out against a full rendered piece for the simple reason that colors are more eye catching. Pencil drawings often have to be top notch to make a chance in the poll. Using pencils isn't an excuse though to only complete a rough idea, I expect a full blown render.

Seems to be a bit quiet in here...:P
So I though I'd post some thumbs and ideas I managed to get on paper. Might or might not finish anything, I got a couple of other fun projects planned for this weekend now that I'm free of my deadlines and none of the ideas so far seem promising to me :( Shoes are hard...
Anyway, enjoy and don't be shy to post your own sketches :)

yoitisi i'm liking the look you've got going with the N2O container on the back of the boot. Maybe that's just cuz i'm partial to the more industrial looking designs. The cowboy style boots are cool, but they need a little more to convey that they give you some sort of power.
me working mostly in silhouettes right now, depending on weekend events i may or may not finish anything. super bowl will probably destroy sunday. ha!

this is a hard one yoitsi.
really want to join in, but just don't have any ideas.
Boots leave loads of cool design possibilities but trying to think of a use they can have is proving more of a stumbling block. Think we could be seeing a lot of rocket boots.
**EDIT** place saver. if i ever get to designing, will put wips here to save spamming

find a problem, that would probably be easier in this case than juggling just cool look designs first iimho

zomg, i think i've got it.
I don't know whether ill reach the finish line (again) as i have two pretty busy days ahead of me that i'd have to squeeze it into, but...
How about a boot that allows the user to walk on liquid (ie water :D). Im trying to puzzle over the science of it. Far as i can think, the only way within current technological boundaries to turn a liquid into a solid is by lowering the temperature, so i was thinking some kind of supercooling jets or something.
Another way to go would be conceptual tech of a sort, somehow designing somethign which induces a solid state in particles, but as thats not reeally physically possible im not sure if it would be allowed? hmmm. this one's gona make my head hurt now...

kinda what i had in mind.. or it could freeze a jet of water into ice and the wearer could skate on it...?

Just throwing around half-baked ideas for a sort of futuristic maglev boot that's also wearable as a regular one.

i must say, i went into this kinda grumpy, but once a friend suggested i tried making boots that endowed their wearer with a cat like ability to land on one's feet from long distances, the rest was pretty easy
to appease form2function i did a boarder and formal presentation - and since i fleshed some of the inner workings out more than normal i decided to include those as well
also, i loved the sweet steampunk loving i had been so long without!
as a last note i am really really glad i jumped off of painter x when i did... i couldn't have done this w/o photoshop - its that simple

Hey Legato, very cool idea. I like the Victorian feel to the design a lot.
I have trouble understanding the working principle though.
The piston I buy, but what jumps out immediately is that there is no way for the legs to unfold past the joint that's directly mounted to the piston. If it was a scissor design it would make sense, but as it is I just don't see what would make the lower parts work in any way other than hang loosely.

the 'foot' the 'shin' and the 'thigh' would all have pre wound springs in their connection joints that would be released along with the main piston's pin, probably through a simple internal cable system, that way they too provide resistance as the wearer crashes down to earth. i actually didn't include that because i thought it was less interesting than the gyroscope thing X_X
EDIT: clarified the coiled 'watch' spring mechanics of the lower extending 'feet' and changed the layout a bit

Really fantastic work here, love the Victorian design. I love it in architecture, and it's the same in this case, definately gets my vote so far. Well done.

Good to see more people rolling out on this one :) Legato you're improving with leaps the last couple of rounds I must say.
GusTheRobot: Yep the cowboy boots were drawn from reference to get a feeling for how they look, as they're rather hard to draw I found out :)

Finally settled on a design - a sort of footwear for steel mill worker of the near future, with on-board active cooling for the boot itself and for the suit as well.
Now to paint that sucker...

I went the futuristic route. Here's my final:

These power boots are standard issue on the moon colonies of the future. They allow the wearer to easily manuveur the Moon's crater-filled landscape with the help of dual booster power integrated into each boot. The fuel canister for each booster is a highly concentrated form of jet fuel, which has a 4 hour supply. The boot itself has ceramic coating that disperses heat quickly and effeciently. Buy yours now, operaters are standing by...

It's good to be back, this concept is basically a pair of assault boots with twin cannons on the toes and one on the heel. when you press the triggers held in each hand they fire. I was trying to go for a heavy weapons feel with these boots. I chose to draw a fat guy wearing them to try and emphasize that point.
anyways, yeah, there goes my power boots...feels good to be participating in these things again, if I have time i have some other ideas in my head to put down...

1. Absorbing quarter of the dancer's weight when needed (1 min max). Good for jumping, lifting, and it's healthier to stand on your toe.
2. Lifts the dancer to the air for 15 seconds.
3. Balance strips.
4. The connection area. information is sent from the tip of the shoes for the massive part.

These shoes were worn by the famous actress, Janice Brown (third clone of Maria Brown) in the Role of Agent Angle in the James Bond Movie, Green Angel. She was able to pull of the ugly fashions such as these second dark age style shoes with such grace that she was names “swan” by the press.
These shoes were supposedly created using secret technologies during WWIII by Angel’s Great Grandmother.
They allowed the wearer to teleport by tapping the heels together three times in order to activate a connection to the satellite atomizer, then speaking the name of the location (this technology at the time had the side effect of often causing pieces of missing clothing which worked in the male viewer’s favour). Each sequin on the shoe is a nanochip that is wired to the next in order to create a computer capable of doing this.
They also had weak micro-jets in the soles that allowed the wearer to float several inches above the ground. The buckle of the shoe also has one scalpel sharp edge.
A secret compartment was concealed in the heal of the shoes allowed the wearer to hide such things as cyanide pills, garottes or lipstick.

Houses an internal near field warp generator that can bend spacetime to the wearer's desires. So far the best application seems to be in the rapid purchasing and retrieving of cake. More research into other applications necessary

Good lord, I need a tablet and software!
I did my the old fashion way but here it is:
http://www.ebsqart.com/Art/562/483101.jpg
The concept is a steampunk GPS boot that gets you where you're going.
You punch in the coordinates into the Destination Meter and then the Gyroscopic Navigator plots it.
Then you Throttle on and the propellers blast you forward on a hover cushion of steam.
The boot pictured is the control boot of the pair.
The non-control boot is the same but without the throttle or the destination meter.
It follows the path of the control boot by using a magnetic mechanism that displaces the route a foot to the left (or right for left-handed control boots).
The boots are constructed of leather, silk/hemp fabrics with brass fitting and a rubber gum sole.

I seriously need more fucking time to finish this, so detailed trying to fit every piece of armor together right, and I have to finish her boots and long bow, boots being the most important thing, they are supposed to be like senitent boots, infused with the soul of a dragon, ok i just wanted to get my wip in, and I'm wondering how much time I have left to finish this?
