View Full Version : Music for painting?

What do you recommend? Do you listen to normal bands or do you listen to soundtracks/orchestra type of music?
I tend to listen to both, but I'm having a hard time sitting still and painting for a long period of time. I'm beginning to think it's the music. I tend to listen to random playlists on Imeem(like today, it was called "Electronica-Soothing"), just trying to find something good that can keep me motivated, but not give me a headache.
Do you guys have anything special you'd like to recommend? I'm more worried about instrumental stuff, on the account of me singing while I paint and getting distracted. :nohope:

Ambient.
Ishq. Aes Danae. Solar Fields. Ulrich Schnauss. Lemongrass.
It's not distracting, and is very relaxing.
If you need inspiration however, the Gladiator soundtrack gets the blood going.

Lately i've been making specific playlists for specific jobs, mostly on the sketch phase. "I want the mood from this this and this" type things. What sort they are depends on the job though.

I listen to a wide variety of tunes, lately I seem to be moving more towards electronic/orchestrated stuff.
For painting sigur ros, pink floyd and crime in choir.
Ultimately it depends on my mood.
some other good painting music
NIN/ratatat/Panda Bear/Harry Gregson Williams/Yann Tiersen/Air/Amon Tobin/Dj Shadow etc

lately instrumental or foreign language music, its ambient and you don't get distracted by lyrics...
current playlist is Einsturzende Neubauten, Godspeed you black emperor, Explosions in the sky, Battles, Pelican..

mostly lyric-less or foreign language tunes. it's harder to get distracted if you can't sing along.
anything that fits into the "post rock" genre gets me going. recently a lot of 65 days of static and god is an astronaut.

I myself used to hate rap... And then I heard Kanye West, now he's one of my favorite musicians... But somehow I ended up jumping from his style of rap to Tech 9/murder rap stuff.

Metal. I listen to what I like. I've never changed my music just for painting.

It depends. It is usually whatever I want but if I get distracted it is straight off to something in the vein of Four Tet or something in the vein of Explosions in the Sky. Lyrics can throw me off sometimes.

When I'm painting or drawing, I like to listen to the cheesiest dance music in existence (such as the Dance Dance Revolution soundtracks). It keeps me alert as I tend to bust out a few corny dance moves while painting.

I usually listen to rock or loud music on. I do listen almost all the time even if I am painting or doing something else. It keeps me awake (Nightwish, Sonata Artica, Stratovarius, etc) I also listen to different games soundtracks (Guilty Gear, Final Fantasy, Shadow of Colossus, etc). Currently I been listening to the one of Lost Odyssey (very good Uematsu stuff). The nice thing about videogame songs is that even for just one game it has a bunch of genres of music in them that adds some variety.
What I found interesting is that if I kept listening to same band for a few days my thoughts stop flowing and I can't get too much stuff done. It's like having your brain saturated with the same sounds and vibes. It gives the need to change to another band, or find a new one just to have my mind fresh. Also, from time to time, silence it's a good companion too. As in many things, it depends on the current mood.

Thank you guys, for all the bands and whatnot. I've bookmarked a few playlists of some of the bands you guys recommended, and I still have to check out some others.
Anyone heard of Imeem? It's a GREAT site. It's a site that allows the users to upload songs, create playlists, and other things, and you can create your own too. It's good if you want to create a playlist of a certain mood, since I know you guys listen to certain depending on the artwork. All you gotta do is register and you can find hundreds of great songs from many bands. imeem.com (http://www.imeem.com)
Time to go paint while listening to the Harry Potter soundtrack :D

it depends on what I want to paint I realized that while listening to orchestral stuff my paintings came out soft and relaxing. While listening to Hard Rock and Heavy electronic stuff I produce more violent, sharp images.

When I'm drawing from ref, imagionation or doing studies i can listen to anything. When I read, I want it as ambient as possible.
