View Full Version : DSG 1327: Creature: BIZARRE ALIEN IS LIKE AN AMBULATORY COLLECTION OF SLIME-MOLDS

[ Slime Molds are a weird life-form that cannot be classified as animal or as plant, but share traits of both. Very peculiar stuff. ]
[ This creature's look should be inspired by the visual cues of the actual slime-molds, but taken to ridiculous extremes... ]
[ ...And whereas slime-molds do move around on their own, this beast can actually walk (or swim, or fly) around on its own, using various wild-looking extensions. ]
[ Also, I was imagining that this is a predatory thing, but I couldn't fit it into the topic header. So, it's up to you whether you wanna make that a clear attribute or not. ]
[ Here are a couple of pages that should give you a starting point for textures and form types... ]
[ EXAMPLE A (http://www.sharnoffphotos.com/myxos1.html) ]
[ EXAMPLE B (http://www.discoverlife.org/20/q?search=Eumycetozoa) ]

Old George was just a little too curious when he went in to investigate the recent disturbance coming from the abandon mine shaft..

Really wanted to work on defining shapes and depth with a light source in this one.
Really like the bold defining colors in yours Nightblue.
Awesome line work and great variety of organic shapes defining your alien Verastegui.
Nice creeping pose HunterKiller_.

Slime mold.. we go way back to the days of playing the ASCII game "Rouge" on the computer, starving.. its all you can find to eat.. so you eat the mold.. ummm..
Any who this little guy moves by growing its roots(?) then moving froward.. its primary food is other slime molds as well.. and while it does not move fast (2 feet every year) it is a vicious predator once it does catch another (slower) slime mold. Long live evolution :yayca: .

Completely forgoing my previous commitment to use DSG to practice different techniques, I've decided to instead concentrate on improving what I'm already "good" at. That being said, this was a quick 1 hour sketch and color.

Water slime mold, also known as Aquatic Snot.
Snot is capable to grow roots on any part of it's body. It's eyes and mouth are the three transparent leave like arms. When it finds something edible the mouth-leaves hold onto it until everything is digested, a process that often takes several months. The 'head' of the Snot is actually just a feather light defense system against predators. It spreads tiny seeds that gives off an awfull smell. It is often found in very deep caves, lying about in a puddle. When moving the Snot will dry out it's own roots which eventually will fall off. Then the Snot crawls alongside puddles until it has found another place to settle.

It's been a long time, so I thought I'd start up again with this one.
I'm attempting a speed paint, limiting myself to 30 minutes. This one fits that bill.

hi, I'm a newbie here and I don't have much experience in drawing. these DSG topics are great, they inspire me to do something on my own
here is my picture (pencil -> bad quality scan -> some ps). I'm planning to participate in the future with much better ones... :bashful:

though this slime mold creature actually can walk from place to place when the food supply of the current location is exhausted, it prefers sticking to the ground with some body parts, while the others do the "hunt", usually in the preys' inactive period.

Hi,
This is my first post and first image on CA all rolled into one.
I am in a bit of a hurry at the moment, so no time to finish it off, but ill try polish it up and add some colour work later (to be added to my currently nonexistent sketch book).
It lures unsuspecting passers by with the light on the end of its 'appendage'.
Crits welcome, I dont bruise easy:)

the circumstances and plans are similar to mine, but your picture is faaaar better than mine :)
I like it, it's promising, crying for colors! with good colors it can be a really moody picture, I think :) it's interesting, has drama, I can't wait to see what it will become!
sorry, I can't correctly write with my bad English what I think :(
Ryoken, thanks for your welcoming words!
it's a really good round, great creatures, I love many of them.

I made a digital version, too. I haven't spent much time with it, it's not worth the time... created in Flash, next time I will try Photoshop (or use my pencil, it's the easiest for me now).

it has huge problems, I know, but I could make a better body and pose for the slime mold creature, it was very awkward before.

Doesn't really look like a slime mold...maybe needs more 'slime' to it. Tried to illustrated the predatory aspect of it. Stabs prey, then feeds on it while it rots, using tendrils as a kind of spiky defense.
