I was wondering about this topic since the video game industry has a lot of 3D in it. What types of jobs do you look for if you only have 2D art skills? Is it harder to find a job without 3D knowledge? What industries do you go for?

Well, concept artists still work mostly with 2D, 3D is also used a little (esp when trying to "dress up" levels design.) However, if you want to do production art (the actual game assets) your avenues are a little more limited, there are more jobs in production than in concept art, but they require more 3D skills. There are still casual and handheld games made in 2D (like DS games, phone games, kids games) and some 3D games still use some 2D GUI elements so you want to target these markets.

Illustration of all sorts.

Illustration of course, as Seedling said. This pretty much includes books, editorials, covers and anything you can think of. If there's an image you've seen somewhere then there's a job behind it.

Are illustration jobs mostly freelance?:sungod:

and what about the cartoon animation industry? Someone told me that most of the work is done overseas. Is that just for the animation or does that include all the character design, storyboard, background layout, etc too.

Thanks so much for the help.

I believe much of the design, storyboarding and background layout are done in the U.S (if it's a U.S. made show) and the bulk of the actual animation is done overseas.

Some cartoons that use Flash completely are animated in the U.S. (Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and South Park, which uses a bit of Maya as well).

That's good to hear that there's a lot of 2D work available in animation as well!

yea, don't worry, I don't think 2D animation will ever be completely dead.
