Do concept artists have to submit demo reels when applying for a job?

I was curious whether concept artists submit demo reels when they apply for jobs or do they just show their portfolio?

If they do have to submit demo reels, what is it like since it's just images unlike 3D where they do turn around video clips and wireframes.

When I applied to my job I submitted a portfolio and a demo-reel. My demo reel is a pretty simple slideshow with music on the background. I'm not saying that you need one though- if your portfolio is strong enough that's all that matters.
