Hey all! It's been a while since I posted here. Didn't have internet for a time and I've been busy with school. These are the very first three pics I've done for a school project. Working on a character that is nomadic and kinda on her own in a rather run-down world. It's all still a bit vague in my head, but it's becoming more clear. So, I'll be working on this for the whole semester and just post things up here as I go along...

This is the first page. Really just getting some sort of simple idea to start from.

Here's the second page. If you hadn't noticed, I'm a fan of simple weapons. They look more effective, and this isn't a fantasy based story... it's supposed to draw a lot from history.
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj03.jpg

And here's the third pic... not a full page yet ;p. She ended up looking a little too sweet. I need her sort of more bad-ass, though a sensitive side couldn't hurt.
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj04.jpg

So, these are all done with a combo of Col-erase pencils (Tuscan Red or Blue), white Prismacolor pencil, and 2B graphite pencil in an Earthbound recycled sketch book, 8 1/2"x11". Yeah, that's it for now I guess. More later

i especially like the tribal facial designs on the latter ones. And i think the dreadlock heair works better than the straight hair.

Nice colours and technique (It is pleasure to see some natural media) I most like 2nd. Onley think that you need to make construction lines more precise (in the 3rd nose and mouth looks banded to the her right.
It would be nice if you make some beafore-in the midle-affter work, also Im wery interested about materials u used.

Great work, phuzion... what kind of materials are you using here?

hey phuzionb looking good here

my advice would be to look at more cultural reference

the MAori tribes of New zealand have crazy face tattoo designs, and alot of the islands off australia like Papua new guinea, and macronesia, etc, have really wild designs for costumes, face paint etc

theres also a really great book called "decorated Skin" a world survey of body art""

good luck with the project--ty

Hey peeps! Thanks for c&c. I always appreciate it.

Mysen: Yeah, sort of. I look at cultural stuff that I know goes along the lines I want, and as soon as I get inspired, I start to draw. But it's only the beginning. I'll pour over a lot more references before I'm done...

AmadorL: I agree. I think the second one was working out the best. I sort of added a new aspect to her though in that she's also a dreamer, so I want the sort of whistful feel to her from time to time, but I'll tackle that a little later. Thanks though... ;p

zeroe: Thanks a lot. I like the dreads too. I'm deffinately keeping those, but I'll probably add some beads and trinkets too.

Danilo: Yes, I'm a big natural media fan when it comes to concepts. I agree about the third one. It got away from me a bit and the features started to float around a bit... I should have gone to bed in stead ;D. As to the media: All of them were done in an Earthbound recycled sketch book; I started out with a Tuscan Red Col-erase pencil, then came in and made the hard lines with a Steadtler Mars Lumograph 2B graphite pencil and did the highlights with a white Prismacolor pencil. I found if you do a light cover of white, then come in with the Col-erase afterwards, it has a very creamy texture, which is wonderful for shading. Anywho, thanks a lot ;p

Blind: Thanks B! uuummm... see the reply to Danilo for the mediums, heh heh.

Tyboogie: Hey, thanks for the advice. I'll deffinately check it out. She's really based in the Indian culture, but I certainly want to mix in some other stuff too, so the tats and what not will deffinately help. And I'm gonna check out that book. It sounds great. Thanks again!!

Okay! that covers it! More to come in a few days I think ;p

This is the start of the environment. It's pretty much a desert setting, if you couldn't already tell.
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj01.jpg

Just messing around with more face designs.
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj05.jpg

yeah...
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj06.jpg

These are obviously weapon designs. Trying not to get too fantastic. These are all spear tips.
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj07.jpg

Aaaaaand more facial stuff...
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj08.jpg

Next I'll be working on developing some sort of gnarley creature(s) for this world so I can get some action goin' on here... More to come soon.

really, that is excellent work... i like it a lot,
if these women live in the desert and were warriors. their bodies would be chizzled perfection... (just a suggestion not a critique)

i like the last face design the best
it has very interesting markings without being too cluttered, and also she doesnt look so innocent as the others.

great job on all these concepts, i really like how you rendered the weapons, great stuff! cant wait to see more!

Hi Phuzion,

I really like the ideas you´re presenting here. Especially the first Figure has a nice southamerican-indian feeling to it. And I really like your approach to weapons, giving emphazise to a "real" feeling to them. You would make my day if you say that you abandon the wearing of weapons on the back :D.

Nice ideas and really good technique!

Okay... I needed to break out of my static designs... so I went for something a little more dynamic. None of the designs are final, it's just me pushing my bounderies and what not. Any suggestions, any at all... background, what I could do for the flow or action... shoot 'em my way. Thanks ;p

fricken awesome stuff. major bummer about the guy stealing your work...
you could almost do a whole society with the designs your doin

Phuzion
October 2nd, 2003, 03:36 AM
that's actually sort of what I'm workin on. The society thing, though most of the focus is on the girl, Amita. But I have most of the culture and whatnot bouncin' around in my dome.

Yeah, the dude's a jackass. Takin' my stuff. It's a school project for cryin' out loud! How pathetic is that? Anywho... I'm glad you like this stuff. It's loads of fun, but the moral support really helps me keep it coming.

This picture was very obviously, and very directly influenced and inspired by Franz Steiner's Xena picture:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11821

I've never really used the airbrush tool, so this was a fun experiment. I decided to work a little more with straight tone and contrast, so I'm painting with black and white, and this was a perfect way to go about it. Thanks Franz!! You're the man!

http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj10.jpg

Okay, worked on the sternum and stuff... I think it's better. It's starting to work now... ;p

October 2nd, 2003, 09:52 AM
ohh wonderful!
the toning is great, very nicely done
but the hair doesnt really seem to be hers? maybe use lauryn hills as reference? :D

post more! :D

Phuzion
October 2nd, 2003, 11:30 AM
If she was supposed to be black, then I would use Hill, but she's more Indian descent. Can you tell that her hair is pulled back into a messy ponytail/top knot? I think I need to clarify that more... one more thing to work on ay? Thanks for bringing it to my attention ;p That's what I need. Peace

Hey, nice. But it looks like her shoulderblades are missing, and the muscle on her back that connects with the neck, the trapetzius, is i bit to small and invisible.
Fixing that should give the chest some depth I think. :)

this was just a 30 minute brain storm on a creature's head... yeah... that's about it.

Beautifull work youve done there Phuz. And by the way. I think that your painting of that girl is even better than my "Xena" pic which influenced you.:) :)

all breathtaking stuff! you're excellent at what you do.

October 9th, 2003, 01:33 AM
Franz: heheh I dunno Franz... you're pic captures a lot of unspoken stuff that's going on. You really captured a sense of space behind her, and the sense of a story. I love it. But thanks anyway dude.

Snowfly: heh heh... thanks for the applause! that's a new one. Is that you in the picture? I was just looking at that avatar before you posted. Suuuuuper cute ;p And you're a Saggitarius. I bet you own the room when you enter. Peace hon.
btw, your site's down :( oh well... just have to check your work out later.

Okay, here's another update. I've got a ton more stuff, but I really didn't feel like scanning it all in. I guess I should get myself a digital camera, ay? All in good time.

This was me playing around with the idea of making her a little more teched out, but I decided against it, though I did manage to get some good pants out of the tangent run.
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj11.jpg

Creature possibilities. I wanted to make them more humanoid cause she's going to be a sort of hybrid of them and a human, though she's more human than creature; she'll have some of their traits. Heh heh, he looks kinda like my avatar ;D
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj12.jpg

Just playing around with a "shirt" possibility...
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj13.jpg

Same thing here....
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj14.jpg

This is just a concept for landscape. I like the whole look of snow in the desert. Highland deserts are always cool with their mesas and plateaus.
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj15.jpg

I guess this would be in the dead of winter...
http://www.savagesunarts.com/Galleries/Project/prj16.jpg

Yeah, that's it for now. I'll post more soon... hopefully ;p

Here I'm finally taking off with the creatures... had to push my creative brain into creature overdrive to get to a good ecclectic space. The drawing took about an hour, the coloring took about 45 minutes... Photoshop.... yeah, more soon, hopefully.

Cool looking, like I had told you. But at least for Poisons sake, add the sketches you did of this guy. Man, those things rock. I love em. Plus I want them in my Phuzion folder too.;)

Also, if you change the name of your thread, to a more creature based thing. You'll probabaly get more views.;)

so, did you all know that a Myrmidon was a highranking soldier close to Achilles, that did whatever he was told without question? I don't know how I feel about being ranked Achilles' bitch. Anywho... thought I'd throw that out there. :hmm:

November 10th, 2003, 10:13 AM
Hey Phuzion. What sorta references do you use?

Phuzion
November 10th, 2003, 11:33 AM
pvrhye: Hhhmmm... it varies widely. For the girl, I didn't directly reference anything, but there are a couple Indian models that I've drawn so much in the past, that I pretty much know how to get a likeness without looking at their photos. For the landscapes I just looked at tons and tons of pics of highland deserts, cause I love the look of deserts with snow. As for the creature, I referenced loads of animal skulls and pics of reptiles and various horned animals ;p The final result for him was a mix of Wolf Eel, Snapping Turtle, Warthog, Big Horned Sheep, Black Horned Buck, and some Goat.... with some little Jaguar traits thrown in for good measure.... yeah. :D
