Hey folks.
:lens:
Welcome to The Photography Workshop 005 MANIPULATION [collage]: "my totem me"
:lens:
RULES:
- Take, create, manipulate and put together photos according to the given assignment.
- Everyone is invited to participate!
- Everyone (even those who don't post photos!) is invited to comment on and critique on all photographs. Posting in the workshop means you appreciate constructive criticism. Be respectful.
- Paintovers/Manipulations to demonstrate a point are okay only if you ask the photographer first.
- Post WIPs! This is not a gallery thread and not a competition. Show us what you are working on and share your thoughts. It will be interesting to see everyone's progress.
- After three weeks there's a break of roughly one week in which the next topic is chosen and the opening of the next installment prepared.
- This is not a lecturer/teacher based workshop. Community interaction and good communication are vital for the success of the whole thing. Talk, ask, share! Have fun!
- Any topic suggestions or debates should be taken HERE (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=98481).
- Any kind of manipulation after pressing the shutter should be documented.
Assignment 005: MANIPULATION [collage]: "my totem me"
Based on a suggestion by alucard this will be the first of a series of workshops dedicated to photomanipulation techniques.
Comparably easy to achieve, "collage" will kick this series off with a technique which needs only the most basic image manipulation skills. No painting or drawing craftmanship is needed.
Your task(s):
- create a photographic image according to your interpretation of the title of this workshop ("my totem me"). This sounds like a self-portrait, but feel free to stretch the meaning.
- to create this image, put together any number of source images in a meaningful way.
- entries have to be serious attempts at making a collage work.
- collages can take any level of complexity: from combining two or three elements for a minimalist beauty up to fusing a whole image database into a mosaic of dazzling awesomeness.
- POST WIPS! Everyone's here to help and your WIP is extremely helpful to all of us!
TECHNICALITIES:
- source images are important. Get as many as you can to fire your imagination.
- Don't infringe any copyrights! Use only images you are allowed to build upon.
- Images for any topic or subject can be found in abundance on flickr.com... do an advanced search and look for creative commons licensed imagery.
- Basically, what you need is a bit of knowledge about layers in your IMP app as well as adjusting tonalities, masking, performing selections to create some kind of harmony between them. Links to follow.
INSPIRING OR HELPFUL LINKS:
- layers in photoshop (http://www.elated.com/articles/introduction-to-layers/)
- layers in the GIMP (http://www.tankedup-imaging.com/gimp/layers.html)
- complex collages example (http://brainforest.cgsociety.org/gallery/)
- minimalist collage example (http://ryen.gfxartist.com/artworks/141831)
- another minimalist example (http://tommyguns.gfxartist.com/artworks/158209)
- a flickr group showing collages (http://flickr.com/groups/collagecrazy/)
- advanced search page on flickr... (http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/) last category is creative commons licensed pics.
Check "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed photos" and " Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon" together with the keyword tag for your specific content search on the top of the page...
SIDENOTE:
While manipulation is a topic which often leads to debates between purists and anythinggoes-ers this workshop deals with the HOW and not the WHY.
