Space for lurkers

Since I got more applications for this class than I can handle, this is the place for everyone who did not make it into my class to post their work. Unlike the threads for my mentees, this is for all the assignments I'll set. You can choose to just do the occasional assignment and post it here, but you'll get more out of it if you follow it through and do every assignment.

I might peek into here occasionally to provide some advice, but I encourage everyone to also comment on each others work as I am already very busy.

Just some of the exercises. I don't have a scanner atm so i'll follow along digitally. I must say using my shoulder as the only source of movement while drawing feels very odd but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

qbertp: Doing it the traditional way makes you learn faster in my experience, and you might want to try doing it a little bit bigger. Also, the movement shouldnt' come from your shoulder alone, but your whole arm has to be in it. It's using only your wrist that you should avoid :)

I'm already devout fan of this place and you sure will see me here more than anywhere else on CA.

I have a fascination with ID and have already been completing the assignments on my spare time. Just with the cube assignment I have been creating things I didn't think I could until now.

Good to know yoitisi. I was contemplating getting a elbow brace to stop the motion;) I'm doing more of the perspective exercises in a larger notebook. Thanks again for the teaching the class and for giving us a spot to goof around in the back.

qbertp: Hehe no an elbow brace would really mess with your drawings I imagine. As long you don't make it too loud in the back there all is peachy, but otherwise I'll walk over with a ruler and put it to use for something it wasn't designed for, I promise :P

Hey i like your work so i think I'll follow along. i was wondering what all you'll be covering and how often you put up assignments? i looked around on the other threads in this area so sorry if i missed that part

Ultimo Hombre: You can find a short list of what I'm planning to do in the Assignment thread in the first post. I have to edit it some more though, so it's nothing final yet. I try to put up a new assignment every week or so, but the start has been a bit hectic as I had a load of deadlines first. The coming weeks will be much more easier though so I hope I can keep the pace up.

I have finished assignments 1 through 5. They all were quite challenging and I had a great time learning.

EDIT: I missed Assignment 4, but did it. Such a fun assignment! I love doing things with a million lines, then it looks perfect! Thank you for teaching this FUN stuff, yoitisi!

Important: In mexico is not very common format A3, so I am going to work in these early exercises with a format letter. W: 21,59 cm H: 27,94 cm

hi all,

i am an graduated industrial designer from Turkey. Unfortunately, our college was engineering based (not a college of fine arts ) and have been teaching industrial design just for 15 years so they skipped the very basics of industrial design sketching somehow and i was lazy those days for improving my sketching skills. i draw so little sketches for my ideas and its details for just for me and they are not for presenting. usually, i solve design problems while modelling it in 3d programs. it is another technique but i am little bored of it. i want to enjoy myself with beautiful marker and pen sketches and presenting basic ideas to others with them.

while surfing on net, i discovered this thread and said this is the restarting point and decided to attend this program. so i added first assignments. i will be happy for comments and further informations.

i want to ask something about sketching techniques. in some tutorial videos, i saw people faking with pen close to the paper before the creating the line and create and invisible path in their mind and then drawing. does it can be useful or is it lack of self-confidence ?

i would like to thank you for the effort you have put on this mentoring thread, i´ve been following all along, but haven´t posted here until now. My scans aren´t that good, don´t know how to clean them up (any tips?) but anyway here they go...
With the first 3 exercises i had no problem, then i experimented a bit with the last cube and got a bit confused proyecting shadows, could you explain to me how to do them right when the cube has been carved or has complex forms?

Azalin: About your question, the rules for drawing the shadow still apply, so you should be able to take any point on your shape and project that on the ground like I showed in the first shadow exercises. Next week we'll see some more complicated shadows, so I hope your question will be answered by then.

First of all, hi everyone! I'm new here.
I got here for industrial designing too. I'm currently a student at Delft University, where I believe Yoitisi himself also attends (attended?), judging by his location and methods;)

This is ideal for me, I must say. I missed some of the design drawing classes this quarter, and this sure is a great way to look up what was discussed!

I say keep it up, and thanks for the effort!

(I'd post some sketches, but I don't have an A3 scanner lying around;) I'll see if I remember to use the ones on the campus tomorrow.)

Hey Yoistisi, I just noticed your mentor quite a few people amazed at your kindness and dedication in helping others learn. So just wanted to stop by and give a fellow designer a hand (especially with all that's happened in he last few weeks.) So in the kind spirit or yoitisi let's get to critiquing.

Mattgamer: not a bad attempt at all for the first one though the convergence for the second one is off, maybe you could try being a bit looser with your strokes and focus on drawing lines converging to an imaginary vanishing point for one side first, drop in your verticals then focus on the other side.

Marmentido:The line work is coming keep drawing those lines. I think you should spend a little more time working on you convergence of parallel lines as well and try not to focus on as much on nailing the four points of the box when drawing the ellipse so much, but instead try to focus on seemless oval/circle in one line.

Sceletor: Same comment as above with respect to focus when doing the ellipses.

Elmagnifico: Not too bad, as you go out to design/ sketch more realistic objects you'll want to slowly move away from having your vanishing points so close to your objects eventually completely imagining them.

As for your other question the ghosting actually helps allot at times, it's not about a lack of confidence I tend to ghost over what I want to do in terms of a line before I commit to it usually. Usually helps in making cleaner sketches.

Azalin: coming along nicely keep practicing. Here is the answer to how you would conctruct the shadow for the one where you have the question mark, more or less. (it's a bit fussy since i quickly sketches it out thumbnail size (2-3")

I just finished the last of the assignments, found them all very useful and learnt a few things that my ID lecturers didnt teach me lol, looking forward to more :)

Here's the boat assignment, screwed up a bit on the vertical lines, think my head was a bit too close to the page xD pretty happy with it anyway though.

I was wondering if anyone out there could take a few minutes and do a few examples of something like how the boat was constructed in yoitisi's tutorial. I saw a chair and a boat but could really use more examples of this type of viscom drawing. I think this forum is pretty dead but i guess it doesnt hurt to ask. I am aware of scotts dvds but Im looking for something a little less advanced.
