View Full Version : Video game vehicles (now, even larger download)

Scott Robertson
September 17th, 2003, 07:33 PM
Here are some of the video game vehicles I did last year with direction from the talented Mr. Olds. They are all drawn the old fashioned way and then rendered in Photoshop as fast as I can do them.

Hope you enjoy.

Thanks Guys.

I worked on this project off and on as needed for about a year. Each vehicle design and rendering went very fast. Usually I had one day to do a bunch of design directions, I would show them, get feedback and make revisions and final front 3/4 and rear 3/4 line drawings for about 1/2 day. Final color renderings usually ran about 4 to 6 hours each. The car interior view through the open door was the most time consuming rendering at about 8 to 10 hours or so.

Wow! These are fantastic. I can't wait to take a class with you in my upper term. I'm a first term noob, right now and I'm lovin it.I see you walking around at school, and I always want to say hello but I say, "naw he's probably too busy".

Next time when you see some random young guy walk up to you and say "hi its Iwasink from ca." You'll know who I'm talking about.

Do you happen to have any more you can share?

DragonGX,
Yeah, this is exactly the type of stuff I've been working on for the book. Hope to wrap it up by year end.

Deth Jester,
Thanks. I'm not sure where that title came from? Bit scary if you ask me.

Yeah, say hello. Never to busy to say at least hello back. I have quite few more sketches and several more color pieces I can post, I'll scare them up by week's end.

ok every thread needs a jerk and I'll be it because this has been on my mind for awile,:

Mr. robertson I am dying to buy your "how to draw and render vehicles of your own design book" , how much longer do us aspiring farm boy gots ta wait. We like your skills and want to learn every thing we can from you but being stuck in hillbilly vill we don't have the oportunity to learn from you directly - that and no one likes having cows laugh at them for lack of skill.

Ok, now I'm just being silly, regaurdless I'm a big fan and I will be buying your book as soon as it comes out, I just don't know when that will be- till then I will just study your work like an obsesive cumpulsive hillbilly.

Thanks for your thread.

very nice. i was going to list which was my favorite but there are several i really like. the first rendering of the interceptor interior is amazing. the way you pulled of the difference in materials and that lighting in the orb is really neat. i like several of the designs on the vehicles but i find the airboat battle cruiser one the best. its a good take on that kind of vehicle. i also love the render on the bronze boat just because :)

very inspirational in all! i had a few roomies that took classes with you on your return from the Switzerland campus. i can see why i always heard good things about your in class tutorials.

Feng,
That is a nuclear reactor of some type. I do not want to give away what it does in the story. The arctic vehicle is just the transporter fashioned after the NASA crawler.

LEN,
I'm doing what I can, trust me. It is hard to find the time when I still have find a way to the rent!

Atmospheria,
I wish, then LEN would happy because my book would already be done by now!

Highfive,
Regarding reflections, lighting etc....it comes from long hours of observation and hundreds of students asking me to explain how that stuff works, in turn forcing me to go figure it out. The game has been announced and I was just given the okay to show this work. It comes out very soon I believe. I did most of these last year.

Dear Mr. Roberston,

a thing that makes me always wonder about your images: How long does it take to make one of those sketches by your "perspektive technique"? It looks very work intensive, I have tried it once myself (and .. kinda failed).

(And this also goes out to you other fellows): Do you think you can achieve such a "perspective correctness" just by a perfect feeling for space and perspective, or is this (hard to find the right words) "calculating", "measuring" technique superior?

Thank you anyways for sharing your outstanding work.

Would you recommend any books on perspective drafting, they way you do it? The tutorials on your site are super helpful, but I'm hoping for precise transposition of distances between planes in perspective - and I can't seem to find anything on it anywhere on the net.

Thanks guys,

Glad you liked them. I had fun working on these. They had to be done very fast and that always makes things a bit tougher. You also guessed the game correctly, Spy Hunter. I was just given the ok to show this work, I glad you enjoyed seeing the line drawings, that is probably the most enjoyable part of the process for me. The renderings were done really fast and straight forward. If they did not have the line drawings floating on top of each one they would fall apart. I have a few more left I will post later.

Thanks guys.

the good war,
Yeah with this type of rendering there is no time to paint every background like I would prefer to do so sometimes I just grab a photo and paint over the top of it. Obviously the big red hauler sky and snowmobile are done like that. The big cargo plane and most of the others on the other hand are all painted. You do what you can when you only have half a day to do one of these start to finish. Always need to remember these are not the end product meaning, their purpose is to communicate design, color and materials of each object for the client and the modelers. Beyond that they have no use. There are no rules to creating imagery that communicates your design to others, and it is crucial if you work for yourself that you can do these things fast.

Mr. Robertson - I've kept myself from posting on this magnificent thread but you said something that I must reply to. I was using using your thread as an example of top-notch work that is done quickly and with a sure hand. Then low and behold, I read your reply about getting these done as quickly as possible and that their sole purpose is to communicate an idea.
I think this is a great reminder for all of us that, for concept art mostly, we must be practicing many things but also to get drawings/paintings done *quickly*. I personally think that truly succesful concept art is not only technically deft and imginanative, but that it is done with a sure and fast hand.
Just wanted to thank you for the poignant reminder and I hope everyone else takes it into consideration as much as I have.
I think everyone will benefit to remember that speed is a part of our skillset, and to realize this changes the way we have to learn certain things.
Great drawings - a couple of those renders look, well, rendered hehe, as in a 3d program...
Kudos.

if it is not too much to ask i always have a problem with finding the right saturation level whenever i am creating a scene... i understand explaining the sat. levels for objects would be a lengthy process so i'll just ask; is keeping track of the saturation of objects more intuitive for you or do you set up a relationship of direct porportionality between value and saturation after you have decided the base color?
thanks again
