This is kind of a weird problem. I use Painter Classic and every once and a while I start a drawing directly on the canvas instead of on a new layer. I can cut out the drawing with the selection tool but then I cant draw underneath it. Is there any way I can meld the cut out square with the layer I paste it to?

Hi,
Since you mention Painter Classic and Layers, you must have Painter Classic 2 since Painter Classic 1 did not have Layers.
If you've made a selection and want to draw below it, you'll first need to lift that selection to a Layer by clicking inside the selection with the Layer Adjuster tool.
Then you should be able to draw either on a new Layer below that lifted selection or on the Canvas.
I don't have Painter Classic 2 installed on this system in order to check, but you may be able to hold down the Shift key, highlight the two Layers you want to combine, choose Group from the Layer Command icon's drop down list below the Layers list, then choose Collapse from that same menu.
Those functions may not be included in Painter Classic 2, however.

Hi,
In my previous message, I typed Painter Classic 1 in a couple of sentences when I meant to type Painter Classic 2.
I've edited the message to correct that but want to make it clear for anyone reading this thread that....
Painter Classic 2 has Layers. Painter Classic 1 does not have Layers.
