I was originally doing a master copy of this, but after I was abouthalfway through I realized that my printout of the original was way too dark, so I kind of just winged it and finished this peice up..

i like the shding, althought you could run strwaks of white over the beard and then coarsely rub it it will give a better look to the hair, but other wise it look great.

the hair was the most difficult part... first the printout I was working from was really really dark, so that made it harder to see what Frederic was doing..

good study. The main problem I think is, is that its really heavy handed. The thing with leighton, alma-tadema, bouggereau, gerome etc. Is that all there work is really soft, and half tone heavy. I think the best way to approach someone like that is to really slowly creep up on your values and do them in stages. Staying as light as your hand will let you. Keep it up though. Not enough people study from masters.
