Hey guys
Been working lately on portraying more action in my concepts.
Of course I am a huge fan of Hellboy and Tony Mignola.
So I kinda used him for reference on this one.
Photoshop........bout 4-5 hours
Really interested if you guys think this style is cool.

definitely cool, I like this style, but perhaps you could mix the two a little, because i really like your traditional black and whites. anyways, very cool laser-head-death-thing you got going.

It works for me :) However, I do believe it's Mike Mignola, not Tony :D
Anyhow, it looks good, although the zipitone-esque shading at the bottom kind of detracts from the overall piece.
Keep it up!

I really enjoy your stuff and this is really great as well. I do like some of your other stuff better, but I wouldn't necessarily go back to the old you may be on to something that's better than both combined. So keep expermenting I know I'll really enjoy seeing what you post.

I agree with those who like your old style better. You have a unique way of rendering your marker drawings that I find very appealing. I am also in favor of artists trying new styles if they are so inclined. You are very talented, I wouldn't abandon your efforts with this new style because you never know where it will lead.
Just toss us a few concepts done in your old style once in a while. They are really something to look forward too.

I MEANT MIKE!!!!
Where the hell did I get Tony?
Anyway, Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like I need to refine this style some more.
I guess the main reason I am banging so hard on this style is in the interest of speed. I am so much faster when I can just work straight in photoshop without scanning in pencil drawings and stuff.
You know the only thing that messes me up drawing on the computer???? I cant spin the page around while I am drawing!!!! It really affects my line quality.
Thanks again guys........
Wish me luck.... I start next week as the new concept guy for Scion Entertainment.
p.s. never heard of projectomanga.com. I will have to check it out

ok ok..........couldnt leave well enough alone this morning
There is supposed to be a huge hurricane hitting my area in a few hours, so I wanted to post what I have so far..............just in case we all end up under water.
started noodling the image a little. I think there is still hope for it.
See you on the other side.

For someone who's only been exposed to your B&W concepts, I think this image rocks. Sounds like I need to point myself to hawkprey.com immediately, see what all the fuss is about. I think I like the smiley-face in the original better than the death's head, tho, the happy kill-machine.
Good luck riding out Isabelle!

Maybe there's a nostalgia I'm missing, but while I like what you have up on your website, I like the work I've seen this summer even better. My $.02, keep pushing in this direction.

i like the black and white picture better, except the fact that its got a skull face D:
the robot in the color pic had a smiley/happy face :D and i thought it looked bad ass :D

I like the line work in both, and i also like the additions to the 2nd. I think the first is a interesting direction you're headed, and I think a combination of your old style, and this new one would be cool to see. I wouldn't quit, but keep pushing it. Your style is normally very clean, with well defined lines, where as, Mike M has done what Frank Miller did, and use the BnW to define the shapes and contours. It is a very difficult thing to do, and I bet your clean lines and the adaptation of more solid black would be real cool, and extremely effective.

Ok like I said I think this is real strong but two issues I'm having are:
THe jumping robots pose seems kinda stiff. Sure he's facing the other one straight on and it makes sense, but how about a little more dynamism in his pose, like shoulders tilted one way, and hips tilted the other kinda thing? I think it would be more fun if his action was way more exagerated. Just a thought.
My other thought is that (and I think you mentioned this) is your line quality, while good, is pretty harsh and thick all the way around. I think *maybe* thinning them out here and there would work for this piece.
But I love it anyway, I can really feel the bottom robot's pose, it's great - Cheers!

This one is cool, i like the smiley face on the color version...but i have to say that i like your original style much better...

Personally I like the color version quite a bit. Only I'd like to see more value change in the mechs grays....some stronger highlights! The zip tone screen for tex is nice...could be slightly smaller scale. I say work with both techniques.

hey man
great critiques. thank you
I do think I need to work on the line quality and pose a little more.
My images are down because my host is located in VA. and the hurricane blasted us.

awesome!
I really like it hawkprey (the first one) but then again, I'm a mignola nut, so it's to be expected. the second just seems noodled. the movement is gone somewhat. harder to read.
do some more :>
