Beautifull colors! The last one is my favourite.
I have a question for you, and I hope you can answer this.
I think all they are digital. What software do you use to paint? and What brush do you use?
What a good way to improve paintings ?
sorry for my poor English.
really i'd love to hear back from you

They're digital. I'm using adobe photoshop for all of them. I use a variety of custom brushes and I tweak them as I go along. Ways to improve painting? Paint from life, draw often, study masters, amputate your social life? As far as I can tell people improve in a lot of different ways, but the common thread is work ethic.

More than anything I like the colors you use. You have a great sense of light and shadow, and how these and the environment affect the color scheme of the piece. I'm curious, what master painters are your favs? I'd be curious to know who's classic work you studied/study. You seem to have a good classical understanding of color.

hey man, I've been looking at your stuff on your website for days now. I love it, and I was wondering how you learned your color, or if it was just intuitive? I noticed that you put pink in the sky like an impressionistic painter, and that's what made me curious, mainly so that I could learn better.

Anywho, love your paintings, and I'm hoping to see tons more!

thanks!

Solid work, a bit too much of a pastel texture for my taste if I may give any crit.

Thanks everyone!

minjarr: What I know about color just comes from a lot of practice and imitation. Painting from life helps, and I don't do nearly enough. I think it helps to break color down in to a few variables. Value and temperature are the really important ones. Thanks for the kind word!

Chupacabra: Yep, I'm at Anet with Daniel, so we are part of the ncsoft family . I think I do use my pastel looking brushes way too much.

kinnas: Hey Man! Yeah, just about everyone has migrated here now, seems like.

Gygaxis:Thanks, how have you been??

Havn't had much time for fun stuff lately, but here a couple quick digital pieces and some life drawings. I've been really struggling with figure drawing, and I need to be doing way more of it. Working on it though.

Also love the figure work. Your weighted lines alone convey the form, and the values really round it out and give the illusion of volume that I struggle with in my own work.

Heh. The one thing semi old farts like myself try to console ourselves with that, although there will always be artists of incredible mastery of light/colour and composition, the core design skills and experience are uniquely our own. (i.e there will always be someone faster, younger, technically brilliant....what does the older, or aging warrior take to heart...)

God help us all when jaime combines all master elements of solid design, colour, lighting, composition and looseness with sensitive experience.
Looking at the current speed, that horizon of godpaint sainthood is probably not too far off, I'd say 2-3 years for the true title of master of arts (character/enviroments)

I look forward to this grand celebrated achievement

Hey, really appreciate the comments and kind words here.

To answer a couple questions:
Dian3: email me at jaime at artpad.org and I'll send you my brushes
kveye: I make my brushes so its pretty easy to get hard edges. Having a hierarchy of edges in a painting will also make your sharp areas look that much sharper. The sharpen tool also helps, but I probably overuse that one.

Been busy with work stuff lately, not much time for painting. I scanned some drawings though (zzzz). Last one is a from a set of Vanderpoel copies that I'm doing, others are from life, 1-20 minute poses.

Lakka: mind the brown

staaron: me too!

Surion: I've always drawn and painted, and I started doing digital work about 7 years ago.

zweiDee: Flattered! Don't know if I'll manage the patience to do something else like those Bouguereau studies again. Learned a lot though, I think everyone should do one or two regardless of how they feel about his work.

bouroune: thanks, had a good time on that samurai sketch

Jonah.O: glad you like

brokencow: Thanks man, I do work hard. I'm glad to hear its paying off. I think the same can be said of you.

Dan Valkar: I'll definitely post them as I'm able.

foxboy: I think the smudging that I do sometimes looks like Painter, throws people off.

zenichi: I work with PS all day at work, and often in the evenings. Still learning new things to do with it. Give it some time and you'll be surprised.

Very solid batch, Jaime. Any reason why you don't detail out the faces?
Just curious..
Cheers,

EDIT:
I am actually more interested in the way you use refs.. How much of it is in the painting, how do you adjust it, etc..
Thanks!

Cicinimo
August 2nd, 2008, 03:55 AM
Thanks all!

Chupa: Yeah, faces are tough for me. Unless I'm doing a portrait, I paint the planes and leave them alone. Otherwise I'll lick at them and make a mess.

As for ref, it varies. I'm trying to learn machines right now. I don't know the vocabulary of mechanical stuff very well, so I can't fake it without reference. The shuttle airplane helicopter thingy was based on a photo of a helicopter.

Most of my figures and landscapes are from imagination. I find reference for clothing and architecture. The castle I posted recently is based on Eilean Donan Castle, I just stretched it a little. That sketch wasn't really about designing an original castle, my energy went in to the landscape. I use ref all the time though.

Heres a study from the corner of an Alma-Tadema painting, all I have tonight.

Chupacabra: Collecting lots of reference and studying it closely. Also studying a lot of landscape painters. Especially the Russians! If you're not familiar, check out Isaak Levitan, Ivan Shishkin, and Arkhip Kuinji.

velinov: Thanks!

localfatheaded: haha, thanks

kidult: For that one I made a set of brushes from photos of trees. I use them like stamps, and I rotate/flip them to hide the repitition. I painted back in to the silhouettes to suggest dimension.

Chuck, mate.: Thanks! That one was a study from a Leyendecker illustration.

Farsh: Appreciate hearing that!

kischi: Study and practice! But make sure you're studying good stuff and practicing the right things.

Churamhija Khan: Thanks
