Thanks so much for the replies!

Huey Yeng: I don't work from a set palette but I can't help but reach for the same colors on a regular basis. Still, I make it a goal to work with different colors than what I've used before. Looks like my post tonight has a purple theme.

Kvick: Other than figure drawing I'm doing gouache landscape sketches. I've found it really helpful/humiliating. If you're finding a shortage of interesting subjects, that might not be such a bad thing. I figure the interest comes from the artist, not the subject matter :)

lamyunaddict: I think the key is in knowing what you're simplifying. I get caught up in a lot of phony brush kung-fu...but real brush economy is a product of drawing skills and knowledge of form.

Barnik: From glancing at your sketchbook, I think your knowledge of color is just fine. I'd say keep it up with your value studies, and color will almost work itself out. Painting from life might help your color sense too.

The drawings are from life, the knights are for fun, and the dragon rider is for MTG:

Amazing work Jaime.
Your probably one of my favorite working artists at the moment, and its a joy every time you post!
I love how your use of colours and light are so well put together. You picked the perfect colours for the shadowed versions of the colour, so you can clearly tell that what colour all those banners and pieces of cloth really are.

Where did you learn most of your painting techniques? It would appear that it all comes from traditional painting,? since that painterly feeling is so evident in your work.
I know you might be busy, but any advice you can offer me on my work in my sketchbook would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks for posting, huge inspiration boost!

what stands out with the last knight piece to me in particular is the formidable edge control - wow.
Can you tell how long the last one took?

Seems like created by the hand of amateur, but looks excellent, indeed...

Hi Jaime,

Your updates are always worth the wait. Love the knights painting, really beautiful lighting - probably one of my favorites of your work.

Quick question, how long ago was "darkman2corrected" done :)?

Do you have any idea why that megaupload link doesnt work? I was just wondering. Anyway the main reason I stopped by is to check out some more awesome WotC stuff and I wasn't disappointed! One day I hope to be there myself, but for now I'll make do with studying and getting to see your offerings

Yeah, a lot of studying my favorite painters and reading about their process. Also a lot of museum visits!

Can you tell how long the last one took?

Hey Man! That last one was actually something I started last year. I picked at it for maybe 2 hours back then, and then another 4 or 5 hours when I finished it recently.

Are these pictures made professionally?
Seems like created by the hand of amateur, but looks excellent, indeed...

Most of these are just for fun, I try to point it out when I'm posting something I was actually paid to draw :)

Quick question, how long ago was "darkman2corrected" done :)?

I think that was 2001, so 9 years.

Here is some new work. The first 3 are from 3 hour life sessions, the red knight is freelance and the bloody wolf viking is for fun.

Krato
September 28th, 2010, 12:59 PM

OMG Jaime. Just OMG. If I could draw that well I think I'd be set for the rest of my life. *_*

A quick question: (sorry if you answered this earlier) In your charcoal drawings, do you use vine charcoal, and do you like use it flat..ly? The consistency of your shading is almost like paint. Creamy and beautiful.

Yup. You're awesome.

Hey Jaime! I think I've collected hundreds of digital paintings and while I think most of them are nice, there are only a handful of digital artists I'm regular come back to - you are one of them.

Keep up the good work!

Truly amazing work Jaime. I've been lurking on your sketchbook for quite some time.
I also took some long session-life drawings ( altought the longest poses I did were 1:15h). Your graphite sketches are quite an insipiration to me.

I was wondering, when you draw from life do you mark proportions or do you just start drawing lines and shades right away? Your shapes always seem very fluid but very accurate.
