To start things of properly, a short introduction. My name is Guido Kuip, I'm 24 years old and currently I'm doing my Masters at Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. Since three years I am a student assistant in the art classes here, which basically means I help out students by giving critique, tips and general help in the drawing classes alongside the teacher. Since I got a lot of positive feedback on my ID drawings in my sketchbook here on CA, I thought it'd be nice to start a mentoring thread here to pass on some knowledge :yayca:
As you can see, it got a little out of hand as there were more people applying than I anticipated, hence this sub-forum instead of a simple thread in the main area. I'm sorry for the temporary inconvenience, but in the end it'll be much better this way I think.
My mentees are:
Legato
D-Holme
Hamtaro69
Pomegrenate
Unsharpened
Enrigo
Arttorney
Ixupi
Asmodie
Lez
Jorge Gecov
form2function
I decided to take on 12 people, as simple observation of other mentor threads learns that there are drop-outs in every class so it's better to start with a lot of people . I hope this will not happen here of course, but if you feel like you don't have the time or motivation to keep doing the exercizes I set, please let me know! Maybe we can figure something out.
So, I realise most of you already introduced themselves in the initial thread, but this thread provides space to do so again in a more organized fashion. Feel free to blatter about yourself as much as you like, share adresses or advertise your own site or sketchbook.
One other thing, as some of you mentioned in the PM when applying: I'm not forcing you to take part in IDW as my mentee. I basically started this thread out of other motivations, chiefly because I've seen a lot of people on this site struggling with the subject of technical drawings. I can only encourage you to try the occasional IDW, as it is a good training of course.

My name is Charles. By day I am a 52 year old patent attorney. I feel that art is a calling that I can't ignore. I have primarily been a landscape and expressionist painter but I believe that all the tools are necessary to an artist or else limitation occurs. I come on here to practice pieces that have other elements in them besides mere environment. Characters and creatures are also areas where I could definitely stand to improve, but I must pick one thing at a time. Thus I find myself learning industrial design in this subforum.
I am fond of painting industrial structures such as buildings during construction, or refineries. Those have been fairly successful with a certain subset of "fans." I sold a marker drawing of a small refinery, for example. Not everybody is looking for haywagons and horsies.
I have done a couple of IDWs back in the day. My industrial design problem largely amounts to detail ideation, I would say. I set out to design a utilitarian object that will perform the function described in the brief, and I omit to add any of the flair that the word "design" also implies.
I've done some traditional media patent drawings, but they take me too long to be a profitable use of my time so I usually contract them out.

my name is michael kingery, by day i am a... 20 year old student, by night i am a slightly older 20 year old box mover for target \o/
my goal is to break into a career of concept art as soon as humanly possible, and skip out on all the fun life has to offer wondering around wanting to know what to do with myself.
i've been doing digital art for 4-5 years now off and on, but traditional art free for almost 4 months now, which isn't too bad, lets see where my marker skills have run off too!
thanks yoitisi for lassoing this all together, and than going the extra step and making it into a sub forum!

My name is Thien Warder and I just turned 19 last month. Right now, I'm applying to illustration course at Sheridan.
I always feel overwhelmed when seeing design/technical drawings. I want to learn and understand the process so I can approach it a bit more comfortably.
That's pretty much about me

You get hooked on it and then the time expenditure at least feels kind of good because you accomplished a lot. You'll probably have to post your lesson examples in your sketchbook (and your turned in assignments for Jens) because it's all you have handy on any given day. Thanks for all the time I know this is costing you.

Well hello again,
I'm Lez, also known as king of bullshitters, don't ask me why... Honesty, I don't know :).
Anyway, I'm 21 years old and studying in a small town in sweden. There's not that much to do here so I spend my time drawing when I'm not studying.
Hope everyone will get something out of it... funniest thing, I already have :)

Hi there,
Just want say thanks to yoitisi again:P, all these thread and the assignment must take you quite a long time, especially since we've got this wonderful island.
Introduction: I am a 27 year-old student, and currently studying master in design. ID drawing is the thing I haven't tried before, hopefully I will improve my drawing in general from this excellent place.

Hey Yoitisi! I've noticed you stopping by my sketchbook and want to thank you for the comments and crits.. Just to let you know, I plan on following these exercises whether you're looking for new mentee's or not. I REALLY want to get a handle on these skills, and am eager to learn from skilled people (like you :)). Again thanks for all your time, I know it's tough to squeeze...

After a very long break from this mentor thread, I am currently thinking of starting it up again after a few people asked if I would.
I always intended to put it up in a tutorial kind of way so people could basically do it in their own time without having any assistance, but I never got around to updating it since no students in here means little motivation for me :P
So...I'm not totally sure about this yet, but since I do have an awful amount of free time at the moment I thought I'd put this up and see how many people react. PM me if you're interested, or post it in here if you want!

I'd be interested in being a mentee. (what/how does pm-ing mean/work btw?)

In the upper left of Yoitisi's post, if you are logged in and click on his name a pull down menu will appear that will give you the option to "Send Private Message to Yoitisi" and that private message is what everybody means by "PM."
I highly recommend this class. I would do it, but I am overwhelmed with work right now and can't be sure to live up to the protege end of the responsibilities.

Pixie Trick: Yep what Arttorney said. You can also find it under 'User CP', which you can find somewhere on the upper left corner under the CA banners, next to the 'search' button and such. Or, you could post in here ;)
Arttorney: Hey I'd be glad to have you back, even if you're low on time. I kind of intend to set it up a bit more open this time, so people can just walk in a do an exercise or two if they want. I'm just checking how much interest there is at the moment :)

I'd be willing to try. We only really got about halfway through the curriculum last time and some people have indicated I should half-assing so many drawings and do some serious studies.
People are noting persistent perspective issues in my drawings too, but I think a lot of that could be solved if I would stop having horizon lines that don't actually pass through the paper. I think it's making people seasick.

I want to be part of this Yoitisi, I am a 39 old romanian with a strong will to advance in drawing skills not because I want to switch to an art career, but mostly because if I can draw been an autodidact then for sure I can draw better with some mentoring...
I play with oil paintings few times on college (there are some photo in my blog) but because I follow science I drop all my dreams to rise my drawing skills till this last year... If we can bring some nice art in the world why don't we?
Sorry, I am not so good in write my toughts in english but I understand all you write...
For some examples of my work in this blog I have some 15-20 years old paintings and also my last year drawings...

Arttorney: Hehe seasickness huh? At least they feel something when looking at your work then, right? :P
laurghita: Added to the list so far :)
Sorry for the delay everyone, I was planning on restarting this somewhere over the weekend, but the last preparations for Dallas have been keeping my busy. I'm afraid I'll have to wait until after the workshop, but I have a week off after that so I should have plenty of time to get this show running then. I'll send out a PM to everyone who has reacted so far to let them know it's starting, but feel free to send me a PM if you're interested and haven't done so yet :)
