for better or worse I have picked up my pen...
Ideas, comments and jibberish are all welcomed.

I really hope that some day I can get good enough to work in the entertainment arts industry, right now I'm a long way off so any pointers would be super helpful.

Hey my friend I really see that you're heading in the direction of realism, which I like the most in artists like you! The landscapes are very professional painted! It seems you can play with colors! Hehe wish you luck and keep the body studies I see that you can do more than that you're showing! Maybe sparing more time and do some more details will develope your skills!

There's lots of good ideas here and the quality has definitely gotten better since you started this thread at the beginning of the year. For the still lifes from your room, I'd suggest using different colors. Notice the color of the objects around your still lifes and how they relfect off of one another. I suck at explaining stuff, so just find some painting books/articles and learn as much as you can from them. Good luck with everything and keep at it!

here are a bunch of stuff i have been sketching out, a couple of rough horse sketches for a painting, some studies and some some more random stuff. I was definitely trying to make the sketches cleaner and tighten up my lines and be more deliberate with what i draw, I think it went well, but i have to say the more I draw the more I can see how i need to get better, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

man, that environmental painting at the top of the page is your best one by far. that looks so fucking good. environments seem to be your strong point (something which i'm lacking i'm afraid). your creature designs are awesome! lighting and shading is also very good, very realistic. the only thing that i don't see on here, which would really help you with your creatures, is anatomy studies. do some of those.

This is one i've been playing around with, mostly as an exercise(in tedium!), i found a small photo of a city I liked, and then painted and expanded it, and the top right of the sky is a photo and used that as a start and then painted across to the left. It was definitely fun, yet quite difficult. there are definitely parts i would like to work on, some of its pretty rough, wow it sure takes alot of time to take some thing from almost done to completely done...well at least for me.

nice stuff man. Your landscapes and enviros are awesome, only thing I would crit is that you should not use a picture as a physical part of the painting, but as a reference. That would give you more practise. The other stuff is comming along nicely to, so just keep having at it:)

so here is my first batch of figure drawings, first time i've taken a figure drawing class, so thats really exciting, learning a lot already, some contour, gestures, and some shading. let me know what you think, and if anyone has any comments or suggestions, I want to learn and get better, so suggestions and critics are welcomed. oh yeah and most were to big to scan so I photo'd them, later realizing how crappy the light was, tried to adjust a couple of them in PS but that idea wasnt working out so, just posted the pics and know next time, to scan in parts or photo in much better light.

here is some new stuff, i felt like it was time for some pens, first two from ref, then a robot scribble, and i felt like painting it and threw in an earlier pic as a background. I was actually quite happy with it, well in the regard that it started as a scribble, I figure if i spend more time planning and drawing, then maybe that'll make my paintings better, Im really not very good at painting in things on the fly.

Definitely getting there with the anatomy, I'm seeing some MASSIVE improvement from the first page. I really like them, keep it going, but remember to watch certain areas, like when your subject is sitting or when someone is lifting their neck up. Right now, I'd say you are at the stage of trying to capture angles in the figure and how the body bends. Don't stress it, and don't stress outcome. And remember, Sometimes exaggeration helps ;)

As for that painting, I'm seeing a white strip on her nose, and it's bringing my attention to that on that picture. I think you should tone it down with a red or a warm color. Also, I can't see the caruncula lachrymalis in her eye! I'm seeing so much of the sclera (White opaque) but I don't see that small little pouch in the corner of her eye anywhere. Pull that white back a little and give us some more detail there. But overall, VERY nice painting, and good job :)

The image of those hands just loaded for me, and WOW, those are beautiful, almost look like a 3D sculpture. Beautiful render!

It may be too late - but I was thinking that it would be really interesting to see something happening in the reflection on the gun (of the painting in your previous post). Hey localfatheaded, thanks for stopping by my book. Looks to me like you're doing all the right stuff - focus on your life drawing as much as possible. With your figures, i'd say watch your overall value shifts in addition to the subtle variations in each area. Squint your eyes a lot. With digital I'd say use bigger brushes - a lot of your work has a "scribbly" feel from using a little brush to render out stuff. Try blocking it in with the biggest possible brush and work your way down slowly until you use the small brush for only small details. I like your stuff - keep up the hard work!

localfatheaded
November 11th, 2008, 06:17 PM

To your earlier question, just delete the attachment on your first post, and then attach whatever image you want to be the little icon thing.

Nice art aswell. You have improved tenfold, however, I suggest replying to peoples comments as it is courteous to show that you are taking their advice.

jedininjaman: thanks! yeah I definitely agree I need color work

Mischeviouslittleelf: thankyou, yeah I'm definitely starting to do that it has helped me out, I think I have been on the path of never really finishing things, and I realize now that you if you dont finish pieces and push further ahead then you wont really go anywhere.

Fishspawn: wow you dont know helpful those comments have been!

DoubleThink: thanks man!

Fraz thankyou, yes that is definitely very valuable knowledge and I appreciate you sharing it with me.

so this is what I have been working on recently, its not quite done but close, I posted an earlier version awhile back, but I really like were its headed, any comments or suggestions would really be appreciated thanks! wow and I just realized the power of save for web in photoshop, how cool...how lame i just realized it haha

Great action shots in those last couple of images - personally, I'm rooting for the last one to get pushed further! In regards to the colour study - it might help if you did some in depth life-studies of metallic/reflective surfaces (unless his armour isn't supposed to be metallic at all, then just disregard me;)). Great stuff!

been working on this for a while and sucks to try and export it from photoshop and have the colors go lame duck on me, any recommendation about sharing photoshop art with accurate colors beside inviting everyone over to my house to wade through my room and peer at my tiny laptop screen. well this piece was really fun and i definitely tried a bunch of new things and learned a few things too, it was really difficult and rewarding, which i like.

alright the first 2 are warm ups from figure drawing, the 3rd one is a long pose about 6 hours, I totally ran out of time rushed at the end and totally f'd up the face, I should have just left it and just kept at the slow pace I started at, lesson learn, sucks I learned it like this haha. then a bunch of photo studies and the last one is a crappy drawing from my head, that shows me everything I have to work on, like ankles and toes and hands and faces and muscles and everything. keeping up with the posting pretty well, I'm even surprising my self.

That´s really nice going here. The studies are very sound and the colors are promissing. About the last piece, her left leg, the one that points to the right from our view, should be a bit more towards the viewer. That comes from her hip position and connects a bit more with the viewer. Just imho. Also she´s a tough whip wielding grrl. She should hold her head high. Proud, raised chin. Again just imho.

Keep it up. see ya ´round.

love the water on your beach on page one, the dragon hunters are kind of funny. Watch your faces, sometimes you move/flatten the features. its really frustrating, but a face thats even a little bit off will totally ruin a HUGE painstakingly detailed painting in about half a second.

What amazes me...That here I sit in this airport, all of these people are going to be on this plane. All the lives, all the instances, heartbreaks, and elations, that make up each individual person, personality, emotion, every scare and every prize. The shear amount of history that constitutes this conglomerate, it shines so bright in the makeup and personality of each individual person, but yet it disappears into a group, into facelessness. I want to see the moments that make up a persons life, the reasons that they act the way they do, and how living in their skin has made them the person that they are today, whether beautiful or ugly, I want to see.

the drawings of the shacks are great, life drawing's too.

the environment thumbnails - i love the first one in post #161, my only crit for the rest would be to keep an eye on the opacity, hardness of edges in the last few.

Been a while since I've seen your stuff.

I just love all the studies you've been doing.
And btw, I saw that you mentioned that the you sometimes rush your studies, don't worry about it, there's always stuff you'll pick up, even if it's only seeing the larger shapes of it all.

The pencil portraits could probably use a little more contrast.
I wouldn't worry too much about rendering the hair, the face is the most important part.
Unfinished sketches have their charm aswell :-)

And the digital studies are sweet as fuck!
Keep rocking it dude!
