I just wanted to post this up here to get some feedback/suggestions/hints/tips/whatever about making this a strong piece. Now, mind you, this is my first serious attempt at using photoshop on a piece of work, with a mouse nonetheless. So, tell me what you think, either here, or privately through gryphdn@hotmail.com

Sorry for the scratch/grainy appearance of this. Can't fit the whole thing in the scanner originally, and then, I'm also fixing it up in photoshop.

the lower lip should be larger than the upperlip
not the otherway round

good work

I agree with the above comment. I use alot of refrence in my work as well, it helps in giving me a starting pad to work from. Though that is all it whoul dbe used for. I like your sketch you definately have talent, just spend some more time conceptualizing her, then begin your serious piece. Good luck man!

You're off to a good start. I would say think the character through a little more. One part that stands out is the headband. I didn't realize it was a headband until the 3rd time I looked at it. At first I thought it was her eyebrow, then I thought it was a protrusion in the skin.

Define it more by creating different textures. If it's a glossy headband then add a lot of highlights, etc. Also the inside of her hair, just behind the neck. It's colored the same as her skin, which is a bit awkward. It should maybe be a darker shade of her hair.

But generally speaking, you have the same problem as I and a lot of the others, lack of contrast and values. You should also spend a few hours sketching out her physique, her outfit, her hair, and every aspect of the character in general. Then you will have a better handle on your character.

Just to add: I dont like bluesh shadow on her hair. If you make it warmer, that will pull out her face.
I like wery much painting shoulder sheild and ball in hers hand, but I dont like banding of her body.
