Color Studies Class in session
Reminder: This thread is only for the subscribed student, algebra, Gloominati, yoitisi and paperX. Please if you're doing the assignment on your own, don't post the results in here. You're free to harass me through the means of PM's, I'll reply if I got the time :)
The goal of this class is basically getting better at seeing color shapes. Not only picking up the right color but also sticking them in the right place at the right size.
I've made 3 posts in here already:
-The first one is where the assignments and important announcements will come.
-Second post is where I will post links to various resources like things you need for an assignment, links to interesting artists, write ups etc.
-Third post is the "Wall". The place where the best works will be put up.
Assignment #2:
What do we all love? YES, EXPLOSIONS!!! So that's we are going to do..
As a conceptartist, chances are you're gonna have to paint an explosion or two. So it's usefull for your future, it's fun, it's educational.
We are all going to be studying the same image. I posted it in the ref Not a 30 minute study, but an elaborate one where you try to match not only the colors but also the shapes and most importantly, EDGES! The way you work those edges will define the succes of the end result!
I'm expecting:
A big sized study of the reference image provided, time is up to you, but it has to look spectacular :D
Deadline: 2 weeks from now!
First assignment:
First of all I want to see how you do when doing a color study on your own. This will give me an overview of how far everyone is. I know that most of you already have plently of drawing hours behind you, we'll see how things go.
What you have to do is something similar like I posted in the resources thread. I will put up a folder with a couple of ref images you can choose from. I like to pick the ref myself for now so I can make sure you're working from good ref. It will make it easier for me to give crits.
Also try to write down any problems or thoughts you were having while working.
I'm expecting:
Minimum 3 color studies, but that's really a minimumminimum!
Size is up to you, not too small, not too big
Deadline: Whenever you're ready :) Maximum a week from now!
Good luck! :)

Heya I'll start this evening already I think :) Those references are great material.
One question, how long should we take for each one? Usually I do 30 min/45 min sessions, and I guess that should be enough. If not, let us know.

whatever timeframe you want really, I don't really time them myself. Of course the focus of the assignment and this class is not on detail, so if you got the big shapes and colors down you should move on to the next one.

Great man, glad you've already started on them.
Stephen Mason, they are around 800x500, but I paint them at 50% zoom. I'll probably post my process later.

good one algebra! really nice colours, one thing though, the background gradient looks too "pure" atm...i suggest throwing some purple-ish hues in there :)
here's one i did, i looked too deep into the forms/details and neglected to break down the colours :^^;: by the time i realised it was already too late...i guess you could call this one a bit of a failure...:(

UPDATE: second piece done! sorry about not really meeting the deadline jens :( been busy finishing LMS and reinstalling the OS....I'll try to do a few more by tomorrow... I like this one a lot more than my first attempt :)

Allright, here's my first. Me ego took a hell of a beating in the process, as I really struggled getting the colors right in this one. I always tend to make the light side too yellow with this type of rock and lighting, while it should be more pink I think (?). Also, the shadow side of the rock seems to be very light as well to me somehow. Anyway, I got sort of lost and it took me way too long :P
For the next one I'll try one that looks less difficult...
Edit: added the last two. I'm much happier with the 2nd than with the rest. In the last one I lost a bit of saturation on the rocks somehow, but I spend a little more time on getting the clouds right as someone commented on them in the 2nd one in my SB...hmm just saw that the trees in the foreground on the last one look like they're doing the hundred mile per hour, hadn't spotted that on my other monitor. Guess I should fiddle a bit with my brush settings there.

Awesome! Three out of four already on the first day, that's great. I'm also working on mine. I feel like I can only comment on these in a fair way when I have done them myself :)
What I am going to do with your pictures is analyze your paintings. Compare them to the original colors and try to pinpoint where things go wrong. I already got some usefull things to say. I think i'll do this by taking your pictures, putting the original besides it in photoshop, and then making notes and marks over your drawing.

Got three done. Three might be all I can do at the moment, I have final exams this week. The snow covered mountain one I had to do twice because my photoshop crashed, but I got more practice trying the flats, then multiply layer for blocking in shadows method, so it's all good.

Found some time to do a second one. I hope I have time to do more than three, I hate sticking to the bare minimum. Just another two weeks without sleep and things will become much easier for a while :D

I was wondering where the updates where.. haha, didn't see you updated your first posts, good :)
I'm going to set the end date of assignment 1 on Tue January 22nd, in the evening. We got 3 out of 4 people finished. Still I encourage you to do some more before tuesday, even if it's just one!
Next assignment will be fun fun fun :D (also sorta more of the same of course haha)

And the last one, I found some time this morning before getting back to my other projects :)
Tried not to lose myself in the details too much this time, but it turned out to be quite a complicated photo to speedpaint. Lots of different colors and surfaces and directions and everything...took me about 45 min/1 hour. The thumbnail works for me, but anything bigger starts looking off and wrong to me :(

Hmm I just found out how to attach and embed images properly using the paperclip thing :)

Not sure if I am allowed to ask questions in this thread; but here goes...
algebra (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/member.php?u=31278): The last image, the one with the snow covered mountains, did you use the liquefy tool to create that watery effect? + how long did it take you to create that scene the second time?
Thanks.
algebra
January 26th, 2008, 05:37 PM
Rist: No, it's a glass filter that I smudged as it got closer to the horizon to simulate the loss of detail in the waves. It's the only time I've ever used that filter for anything other than a joke, haha. The second time I did it it took about 20 minutes.

allright guys, excellent work, i'm glad you all reached the minimum! Sorry I've been lagging behind with everything. I'll post up new assignments as soon as possible!!
I'll post the crits somewhere next week, I've been cought up with school stuff.
As I said, glad you all did some of these, some non-mentees did really good as well. Extra points for yoitisu and gloominati for doing more than required!

BOOM! Great topic, you gave me something to look forward too :D
I'm currently in sort of the same position, couple of projects coming to an end that eat all my free time away :( Will try to get something done this thursday hopefully. As the focus is the explosion here, may we play around a bit with the surroundings?

Sure, if you want to add a car, vehicle or something else, go ahead.. you don't have to put in the camera/microphone stand.

Finally started on my explosion :)
30 minutes or so in it at the moment, I tried to get a solid base first. I think I'll jump to some different brushes now and start getting some details and clear edges and stuff in there.

By the way Jens, when will you be putting up the critiques on assignment 1?
