"One of the things that distinguishes Andrew Jones from other artists is that he does a lot of his artwork before a crowd in a live setting. There are no revisions, no second takes. In this video, covering three separate works, Andrew talks about the moment-to-moment state of awareness that helps faciliate this type of approach. He also discusses a few of his favorite tools in Corel Painter X and how he uses them.
This is a must-have for anyone interested in some of the philosophical underpinnings of one of today's leading visionary artists."

I just watched it. It's pretty damn kick ass! Meeting Android was pretty much the highlight of my trip to Seattle. You guys on the web have no idea how nice and how much of a great guy Android actually is and he's super talented.
One suggestion for next time is to include a bit more on the process of creation meaning more instruction.

This is a response directed directly to Andrew. First and foremost excellent video. You touched on this in your first video and now I must ask. What do you feel about the fact that you just opened Pandora's box. Not just to make way for copy cats ( yes there will be some) but the fact that your technique and idea of performance and abstraction is now floating in the mind and hands of hundreds. How do you feel that others are running with your baby and possibly profiting off of your seed. I am not trying to sound negative I just would really like your opinion on that.
btw I bet for another 14 bucks you can just release some of your patterns for painter.
ok for those that want a review of this video all i can say is buy it and make your own damn review!!!!

Absolutely awesome production, I think it clears a lot of things up for me for understanding how you work (with me being a total n00b at digital painting). Your art is full of inspiration, and the shapes you use in it always have this nice flow and contrast eachother.
And the drunker and higher people are, the easier they are to impress.. hmm I have to remember that one:P.
Also, Andrew, if you read this.. you mentioned skingraft designs in this video and i really like their stuff, any chance you have more of these fashion designers and know where to buy their stuff?
Thanks a lot for the video.

thats also my critic point.. the voice recording is sometimes hard to understand especially when the music is in the background.... would be nice if that would be a bit cleaner

Andrew is a really quiet talker through the whole video and a lot of times gets drowned out by the music, which is a real shame, because Android is so much fun to listen to, and the music was also really good.
The techiniques that I've learned from the demos and workshops aside, I think I gain even more from hearing everyone's personal philosophy behind what they are doing and how/why they create. I feel that gaining that kind of insight is invaluable to my personal growth as an artist and human.
Thanks to all parties involved.

January 14th, 2008, 03:37 AM
And I just watched it finnished as well.
Though the sound was a bit less then perfect, I found that most of the time it was quite clear. A short while into the second piece (skingraft) it got difficult to hear because the music was at a high pace and Android was coming out a bit weaker soundwise then otherwise, but beyond this it worked nicely.
For someone who doesn't have Painter X (I got IX,5) hw do I do without the patternbrush? Does it work in the same way (roughly) as the "define brushset" function of Photoshop?
edit: Unless it works exactly the same as the Patterns Brush in IX,5 ;)
Also, I'm looking forward to hearing alot more on Andrews thought on pattern sifting and random patterns in conjunction with painting using (more or less) flat brushes. The Breana painting examplifies perfectly how good he is at this, but it felt like he(you) just touched the subject briefly with the stuff about "I could say I'm painting Breana, but I'm NOT... it's really just a lot of shapes on there".
Also, I'm wondering about the layers in the Breana image that came with the download- You mentioned that you did colourcorrections and stuff with some layers, I would love to hear more about this as the layers come out as normal-set layers. There is no info coming out of the layers themselfes other then that if I hide them from top to bottom they show different steps of the painting session.
I doubt you painted each and every layer individually (of the ones in the file supplied) but rather that they are different steps in time.
There are quite some people out there that mentions colourcorrection using layers, but it would be interesting to hear YOUR thoughts on this.
Personally I suck at that as it just seem like it's overdone everytime I try it out...
Overall, I think this one beats the shapetheory download in quality and the only real issue with it is the need to improve the sound a bit for the next installment.
Looking forward to AndrewFineArt2, Colour theory and whatever else you guys have in stall for the future...
...man, I feel like I need to focus big time...just found out I'm older then Andrew... I was having a hard time fathoming the expertise allready, thinking he was one or two years older then me. Turns out it's the other way around... ;)

Just finished the video, and WOW! Very inspiring. My only problem was with the sound, it was hard to hear sometimes and the background music at some points over powered Andrew, but not greatly. Hearing Andrew speak was such a great treat along with watching the magic at work. I was so hoping there could have been a small clip of the "performance", maybe next video? Or does that bring in certain legalities? On another note, that was some awesome music to match the awesome work, who did the music? Again, thanks Andrew for the awesome work, beautiful images, and great pick-up line (haha). Love and light -
So when will we get the "Manely-Man approach to Color" video. If we don't get it soon, I'm afraid...

I have to say I honestly didn't really have any problems with the sound. Might be because I was using earphones so I wouldn't wake anyone up while watching it around 3 am I s'pose.
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this video - even though these images were already in Andrew's last thread, it was great seeing how they were built up, so to speak. Seeing the whole process of how these paintings came about really opens your eyes to all the details and little intricacies you missed when first looking at the finished piece. And to top it all off we get a look inside of Andrews thought-process which, again, adds so much to the whole experience. It was immensely interesting to watch, listen to, and learn from this video - truly inspirational stuff. Can't wait for the next ones.
Massive thanks to Massive Black, and to Andrew and Aaron in particular. Cheers, lads.

Cepro- thank you for your support
Zachro --- great ,I'm glad you found inspiration
kraal What a great question- I'm glad that this video has provoked so much thought, i can feel your enthusiasm.
, first off Pandora's Box was meant to be opened, it would have been a pretty boring myth if she kept it closed, what would be the lesson there;).
Being an Artist is my calling, its not a job, its doesn't have to be competitive, at the end of the day if the actions i choose in my life can empower and motivate other artists around me than i have lived a day with purpose and i can sleep well. I strive to relinquish any attachment to my methods, its like clinging to smoke, i live in pursuit of the fire. Its my belief that by sharing information my fire burns stronger. That will lead to discoveries and push me even harder to innovate. Over the years i have observed this pattern as a "flow" i am in in , and these downloads are a new and powerful addition to it and I am excited to see that will come from it.
I may be including the painter patterns and brushes in future downloads, at the moment i want to encourage people to create their own first.
snoochy :)))
Flameseeker- Thank you for your interest I'm glad this video shed some clarity on the realm of digital manifesting. , as far as the fashion realms is concerned i have a few sites i would love to share with this community

archipelago thank you for purchasing the video. We are learning as we go and i appreciate your patience, for the next vid we will pay closer attention to the sound quality. we are now finding a balance between music and voicover.
Jaku your very welcome Jaku, im going to put your compliment in my hear instead of my head.
Texahol Thanks for your in site, it was a decision to share a balance between technical instruction, philosophy and then letting the image speak for itself. i do feel its unimportant to communicate the basics of whats happening in Corel X and i think that the philosophy is something that will trancend the specific application and be beneficial for other realms of art.
Wetterschneider thanks , im a mac guy , good to know
squidmonk3j audio will be fixed in future videos
Ashrumm i am also discovering that the Process of the digital medium is as valuable , or even more valuable than the finished piece
Colrouphobic Thank you so much, i do highly recommend that you use painter X, its is significantly better program than 9.5 , 9,5 does have the "pattern chalk tool" and it works very much the same, it will perform better in X.
im glad you like some of my "shape theory" there plenty more where that came from
as far as the psd, i is more of a step by step than an actual working file. i use layers but i flatten constantly because i am always creating new layers over and over, i may go through i few hundred layers in one painting, so i usually flatten once it reaches about 15 .
as far as color correction ,its more of a feeling thing, i play around with the values until it "feels" good
Earendil hehe, yep the "hell yes! , Fuck No!" philosophy laid out in the vid can be applied to all facets of life and love.;)
kraal viva Clip Art!!!
Mr. Visions So happy that you enjoyed it, i often have people like you in mind when i make a recording like this. the music was my friend Boreta, he rocked the space needle in Seattle.
keep it tuned here for future vide with video footage of the performances
Jorre Wampers your very welcome, thanks to everyone for the positive feedback,
Arron , Jonah , Jason and i are learning as we do this , so all of your feedback and comments are extremely valuable as we plot out future courses out. We realize that it doesn't take a whole lot of Internet wizardry to make files and movies magically appear on your hard drive, and i really want to thank everyone who makes the choice to support us by purchasing these vids.
the more support we receive the more information we will be able to share with you in the future.
i already have two more full downloads recorded and we will be editing them and getting them up when they are finished.
and remember the greatest way that you can express your gratitude is by taking the information and making more art with it. !!

The Audioproblems a lot of you guys mentioned can be "repaired" by using a better / newer Quicktime Codec. Try to update ... I first watched the Video on my Lap and it got some old QT Version installed. I just thought ... oh my gosh, whats up with that crappy noisy Sound and the ever changing volume - but it is doin' fine on my working Computer.
I have to critique the Music ( which is great stuff ) at parts where Andrew is talking ... he talks and talks and talks and I didnt understand a word cause of the music been so "loud". U guys have to fade down earlier, not just 2 min. after he began :)

Android/drew-
I find your personal take on artwork inspiring. I think the majority of that inspiration is that your art stands apart in pretty much every way, from those equally talented folks.
Both hearing your philosophies in the past, and experiencing your helpful, righteous persona, and willingness to spread the same vibe, last week has firmly cemented you a position on, The Good Ones list. A personal list of mine of people who inspire or motivate me.
Here is an homage/exercise to your style with things i watched from your demos and I am trying to spin in my own direction as well.

edit: Unless it works exactly the same as the Patterns Brush in IX,5 ;)
You can emulate the way the pattern brush works to an extent in photoshop. Just define a brush tip and work with the spacing so that you end up with a repetition to the pattern you like. To an extent it's a bit more malleable then corel's pattern brushes. I still find CPX to be a bit glitchy in it's brush manipulation/customizing area. The defining difference tends to be that the pattern brush in corel will let you paint with the pattern more fluidly. Try creating a pattern based brush in PS and then draw a continuous inwardly or outwardly arching circle with it. The tip will just flip at a point right around the point it starts going in the opposite direction that you started. Hope that helps.

ManaBurn thanks for the information, Photoshop has a really robust painting engine and you can get some amazing variations with spacing angle jitter etc,
but there is nothing in photoshop that mimics the distortion and "glitchness" of painters pattern chalk brush.
the pattern brush in painter takes into account, the angle and tilt of the wacom pen, and distorts the pattern accordingly, this is a fundamentally different application that what photoshop is capable of . ;)

This was recorded at Insomania in DEC 06, and Painter X was not even announced yet. When Mr. Jones started painter to do his demo all of us painter IX owners in the audience gasped.

Hate to be the one to say this but the old saying goes RTM. the manual or help menu explains all about the patterns pallette, and how to change the patterns or better yet GET ANDREW"S FIRST DOWNLOAD and he does it on there. all the technical aspects of what he is doing in the live paint series is explained in the 'thumbnail' download

Nah, that explains ho you get Paper patterns to work out, I have yet to find a way to put in patterns in the same fascion into my IX.5
The difference is that the original set is roses. They are coloured, hence I don't get the black-white. In the library there are multitude of other images I can use, but they all have an "edge" which makes the patterns come out as a flat brush with patterns on them.
Clearly Andrew is getting "shaped-edge-patterns" when he paints (meaning if he draws a line the pattern will be the edges, not "straight edged brush with patterns on it" like I get)
Lookd through the manual and it states how to add new things to the library, or even how to build a new library, but they all come out with straight edges...
Maybe it's something that happends in Painter X...
Thank you anyway. I find myself quite often just quitting Painter in frustration, I need to learn it to evlve my paintingskills, but when things that are so straight forward and easy to find in Photoshop demands that three blessed virgins dance under a full moon in may for it to work you start wondering ;)

as much as i'd like to say that,i can't. each and everyone of these left me with my mouth open, and more often than not,i had rather a "holy shit" experience than a "hell yes" one.
but in the end,not written words can contain the genius that is behind this masterpiece of art experience.
i wish that someday humanity will be able to transmit thoughts,so i may be able to somehow show my true appreciation. as stupid as it sounds.

Thank you again for this video! I left feedback for you guys too.
I really did enjoy the video and it opened up more possibilities on utilizing Painter, on parts I at one time found useless.
May I make a suggestion and that might be a happy medium for everyone complaining about the audio? I don't know how much more time/effort it would be for Massive Black, but why not add subtitles or closed captioning to future releases?
There are those that are hearing impaired and it could probably be a benefit to those that are to watch your videos too.
That would probably cut down on the complaining about not being able to hear or "bad audio" mixes.
Thank you again for your video releases, they're truly beautiful and really help apply concepts or features of Painter in very unique ways I wouldn't have understood if not for your demo.

Hey guys,
I just listened to the first 5-6 minutes (where the audio is supposed to be the worst) and I honestly understood every word just fine. Maybe I just have really good headphones? :)
I'm happy to make changes to the sound, but I can't figure out where to make them. If someone is having trouble understanding certain parts, please PM me and let me know so I can fix things.
Cheers

Actually, from 2.15 of the video, the clearest soundquality of Androids voice is located. And I'm reffering to the quality of sound, not how loud or clear he speaks, but the geneal quality of the sound (you can hear it in how crisp the "backgroundnoise" sounds).
The parts where I am having most difficulty in hearing is located at: ~13minutes- 20minutes (at ~20 minutes the voice comes over more clearly), ~35minutes (start of second painting) when the music starts - 39mins (end of music makes voice come more clear again),
The entire last painting is descent quality for me.
Appart from that spot in the beginning, and just after 20minutes (maybe 2-3 minutes) it sounds like he got muffled somewhat, like you used a microphonecover (one of those sock-thingies) or somesuch.
This can make it very difficult to hear for some people, especially if music with alot of base gets put on at the same time.
Since I don't know anything about the actual recording session, I don't know what makes the sound more crisp at those spots, but hopefully it helps somewhat.
I had one spot in the entire video where I can't hear what Android said, and thats at 12.50.
My wife told me that he sais :You see me using alot of lasso-tool", and the main reason she can hear it and not me is that she is a native english speaker, I am not.
Maybe this could also be a reason why some people have difficulties hearing what he sais when it gets a bit too intense with th music?
DON'T remove the music, it works perfectly with the videos and are inspiring parts of it, but maybe tone it down a bit more when the instructor speaks? Try to "crisp" up the sound from the mic a bit and I think it would be completely solved.
Hope this helps.
Also, I have the latest builds for Quicktime, some people mentioned that it might help to get the newest ones and that older builds might give crappier sound...
Anyway.. good job, looking forward to the next one!

the audio is fine, at some points the music kind of overwhelms it but it's totally understandable.
Ohh and did i mention that the video was AWESOME!!! :D:D:D:D:D

I just purchased this tonight and really enjoyed it. Very inspiring work.
I do have to echo the complaints about sound so far though. It could just be the mic, but the voice sounds a bit muffled most of the time. I didn't have this problem with the other videos I've seen from you guys.
Around 14-15 minutes, the voice is way too low in relation to the music. Just something to watch out for in the future.
Someone mentioned it might have something to do with quicktime, so what did you guys use to encode the video? I was playing it in VLC and not quicktime though, so maybe that's part of the issue. I'll have to try it again later in a more recent version of Quicktime and see if it helps.
Regardless, I still really enjoyed this one, so keep up the great work you guys.

I find myself quite often just quitting Painter in frustration, I need to learn it to evlve my paintingskills, but when things that are so straight forward and easy to find in Photoshop demands that three blessed virgins dance under a full moon in may for it to work you start wondering ;)
ok i reloaded painter 9.5 and created this image quite simply by capturing the top image as a pattern and then using the pattern chalk as mentioned by the andrew videos

one thing to remember photoshop and painter are 2 different programs once i stopped trying to compair the two i was able to excel in both

Just purchased and watched this video. I found it interesting to hear Android's shape theories. Graphic Design is much like being a DJ, combining shapes and colors to create rhythm parallel to blending beats and sounds. The last painting of Breana really blew me away. Beautiful colors, and what an amazing technique of painting the face. I'm still amazed.
On a technical note, does Painter 9.0 support the pattern chalk with out a square edge? I'm having the same problem as coulorphobic.

I found when I put on headphones, the bad sound quality that i got with my speakers was pretty much un-noticeable.
Thanks so much for sharing your insights in this video. Especially what you said about portraits, really made me think. Im actually thinking more in shapes and trying to incorporate them in my new work that im doing :)

Hey Andrew I hope you have a chance to read this. I have purchased both of your videos and they have really inspired me and influenced my approach to starting new paintings.
The music you play in the background complements your work well who composed it? Secondly i know you have to speed things up to get through a session in a timely fashion but i think it may be real helpful if you actually slow things down occasionally when you get real fast like in the beginning of the adam and eve painting. And i love listening to your theories on art and shapes and what not, very interesting. keep it up.

This video was awesome! What I really enjoyed was watching the painting come to life. It is one thing to see a final piece, but it is another experience to watch another artist compose their piece to completion. Very cool! I was very inspired and motivated after watching this. Andrew has a great philosophy on life. Thank you for sharing your work. I am going to go download the Boss Monster video right now!

Amazing work, It was a real eye opener for me to see how these processes work and how shapes fit together to create a common goal :) Very inspiring too! as I'm working on some college portfolio's, I think seeing this is going to change my direction a little in how I work on things, thank you! :)

Android: At this point I now have all of the videos that you personally have on this site. I have watched so very many tutorials and have found inspiration in nearly all of them. After watching any of yours (and especially after watching all of them) I get the impression that I _will_ be a better artist; that it's okay to bring chaos to a piece or a piece from chaos; and to bring peace to the photoshop/painter war I've had going on in my head for a long time. I cannot imagine a single individual ever being a greater professional, spiritual, and artistic inspiration. Thank you.

Wow. I just finished the video. Incredibly inspirational and hypnotic. I now have a mountain of respect for Andrew Jones that stretches from cracked earth to blue sky. Absolutely amazing video, the commentary is fantastic. I loved hearing his philosophies, ideas, thoughts, everything. The little comment near the ending was hilarious. I look forward to meeting you someday Mr. Jones. Thank you.

Hello there . I had just purchased the video from Massive Black Andrew Jones Fine Art #1 . It is so well done. The only insruction I stumbled on is how he explained to save a black and white image shape in the pattern chalk section to make a brush. He expaines to open the image and auto select and than save as a brush. I tried all day and cannot do it at all. Is there anyone out there that has the time to explain the steps to save B/w image shapes as brushes in Corel painter X. It would be of great help. Sincerely TMSC

you are not saving as a brush.... you are saving a pattern in the drop down menu in the pallet window

1
Using the Rectangular Selection tool , select the area of the image you want to use as a pattern.
Remember, selection edges meet when the image is tiled, so select carefully.
2
Choose Window menu > Library Palettes > Patterns.
The Patterns palette appears.
3
Click the palette menu arrow, and choose Capture Pattern.
4
Enable one of the following options:
•
Rectangular Tile places the tile in a rectangular grid for fills. The Bias slider does not apply.
•
Horizontal Shift offsets the tiles in subsequent rows. The Bias slider controls the amount of offset.
•
Vertical Shift offsets the tiles in subsequent columns. The Bias slider controls the amount of offset.
As you try different tile arrangements and Bias settings, the Pattern Preview Window shows the result.
5
Enter a descriptive name for the pattern.
Corel Painter captures the pattern and saves it to the current library.

Im actually a fan of his, but hated the video.... well it was fun to watch but i didn't learn anything and the sound quality of his voice was horrible, not that it matters because id say half the time it was just music. The whole thing is his pattern brushes, but he doesn't say how and why hes selecting the patterns, just magically the right one pops up every time. then he uses the lasso tool and glow brush for everything els. Its just a video showing you a guy who has honed and mastered a style you cant emulate lol
buy it if you like his work and to see how he thinks.... tho the voice recording is sooooooooooo horrible
don't buy if you want a tutorial or a how too use painter video.

Yeah the sound levels were going all over the place at times but I listened with my headphones on and heard everything the man said, you just need to adjust the volume a few times yourself. The music was hot! Overall the video was very inspiring and great to watch.
Everyone of course has a right think to whatever they want but let's put things into perspective here: MassiveBlack's videos are not that expensive to buy and I for one don't expect the perfect Hollywood quality from them. The most important thing is to see masters at work and be inspired and learn from them.
I guess if one expects a perfect explanation of every tool used all the time then this, and some other MB videos, may feel a bit of a letdown. But then you can just move on and feel the creativity pouring out from the videos. It takes some effort to learn Corel Painter but there are various resources for that, and the first one is the manual. It's important to understand what different tools do and it's really up to you as the end user to find them. No one said it's easy to master any creative tool as huge as the Painter is, and you know, it's not meant to be easy. It takes sweat, time and more sweat. And hopefully if you have a good eye and steady hand you may achieve the level Andrew, Jason Chan, Nox and other guys in the videos are on.
And about your criticizing Andrew's techniques used in the video: that was a bit rude, man! Even if the technique in itself is "simple" it takes a lot of talent to build stuff up the way Andrew does. Just look at the results! I for one learnt a lot from this video and probably will use the knowledge in one way or another in my own learning and working. After all the tools we use aren't supposed to define the work we do too much, but be there to be used as tools to bring out our vision and show our skills.
And yeah yeah, I'm not fuckin' preaching the truth here, since what the hell do I know. I just wanted to bring out my view on the video and say that it really is inspiring to see such a great use of the Painter in the hands of the master. Personally I've really enjoyed all the videos I've bought from here since it makes me hope that after all the struggling I'm doing in Painter and Photoshop I might one day create stuff as great as I've seen these guys do.
And I'm waiting for the Vol.2!

really appreciate the feedback. hopefully some of you have noticed the increase in production values over the years as we've invested some of the revenues into better equipment. but, as kodekon said, it's not hollywood production that makes a video good or bad. ;)
