2008 is here and it's time for a new sketchbook. Please keep in mind this is a SKETCHBOOK - it will be filled with scribbles, doodles, wip, and random experiments of varying success. If you want to see my more polished work, check out my website at www.aaronpanagos.com. As weird as it sounds, my biggest goal in '08 is to have the guts to post some flawed sketches. By pushing past my restrictive perfectionist tendencies I hope to loosen my style up, streamline up my processes, and ultimately be more creative and productive in my work.

I'm going to start with a bunch of stuff from the last month or two (and maybe throw in one or two older). Hopefully in the near future you'll see a shift towards looser and more expressive sketches. Personally, I already see a change between images from late last year and the first images of this year - so that's encouraging.
To start off, a bunch of concept sketches for races in the upcoming Alpha Omega RPG (www.alphaomegathegame.com). These are the AI.

And last but not least, the deformed and twisted Remnant.

Let's break this up with a few settings. It's a vicious cycle, environments started as my weak point and so I get hired for everything else - so my enviro skills stagnate while everything else improves. So whenever I get a few seconds lately I've been trying to sketch an environment or two.
This first batch is a little older

These are from the last week or so. You'll probably be seeing a lot of environment sketches from me over the next couple of weeks since I desperately need to build that section of my portfolio.

The next couple batches are NPC designs for Alpha Omega - just pencil sketches and a couple with digital color thrown on.

These are a couple character designs based on existing ideas - just some doodles for fun.

Two illos for an rpg horror adventure and a rejected comp for a double-page illustration (they went with one of my other comps, but I liked this one better).

I'm grouping these three because they show the evolution of an idea over the past year or so. It started with the greek hero, and I liked some elements of his armor so I carried them over to the Decadian designs. And then I sketched up this clockwork guy a couple days ago and found myself pulling a lot from the older sketches (while introducing some steam-punk and some ill-conceived traditional fantasy elements). I don't feel like the design has fully evolved yet and I think there are some good parts that got dropped - but I'm really liking the overall feel of these guys.
If I ever have time I think I'd like to flesh it out into a full-blown military with cavalry and commanders, maybe some siege weapons or artillery...

Some random creatures that are a lot looser in style than what I've done in the past. They're not perfect, but they're just sketches and they don't need to be... That's a hard idea to get through my head for some reason.

And my last post for the night... my first two sketches of the new year.

Hi there!!
Awsome start to your sketchbook. Your face studies are lovely, and you have a real neatness to your work that I like. That enviro in post #13 at the top is impressive, keep posting! I wanna see some more from you!! :)

Very, very impressive. :) I absolutely love the faces, and your characters in general. Somebody better than me might have tips and tricks to give, but your work triumphs mine, so I can't give you any crits.
Keep up the good work!

Sorry for the long delay between updates. 99% of what I'm doing right now is bound by Non-Disclosure Agreements so I won't be able to post any of that for awhile. :( Hopefully some of the products I'm working on will launch soon and then I can post the sketches. Until then here's a couple of doodles and random stuff.

hey, your rendering skills are decent and are overshadowing your lack of ability to construct a proper head, i think you may just want to revist the circle with an + on it beucase it seems like you skip that stage on almost all of these heads if they aren't a portrait or profile.
i think i dig your post with the looser monsters the most :)
thanks fo sharing
