yo 3bp,
http://www.dchiang.com/dchiang_flash.html (look under robota)
if you have Ikaruga unlock the art gallery .. that's got some bangin' stuff!
http://www.gamecubicle.com/screens-ikaruga_gamecube_art.htm
I'm curiouse as to why Ikaruga had so much art.. but no story.. weird...
If you're not familiar with Ye Olde Mechwarior then you should check it out.. go to the bookstore and flip thru the rolplay game book.. it's got some readouts of the designs...
OHH OHHH!! Steel Batallion! http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/steelbattalion/screenindex.html?page=1
that game's got some of the most origional mechs I've seen in a while.. very gritty and realistic... (the game's fun too!)
I'm off to see if I can quest for more mechs.

make a search for spinefinger's work, he does some sweet mech stuff :)
sammy: ikaruga does have a story (and kickass art).
it's like that: big bad general finds the power of gods, starts a seperatist movement (the chosen) and people start fighting against him.
it is tto late, though, and his force is too powerful to be beaten. so, the last bit of resistance crumbles away.
you, shinra, fighter pilot, crash in the remote village ikaruga (exists in rl!) where some old people have taken refuge. among them is a genius ingenieur who built the first spaceship to switch polarities. it is named ikaruga, too and is given to you to fight the army of butsutekkai.
if you play 2 players, there also is a female butsutekkai assasin who is flying an experimental spaceship. she battles shinra and crashes, too at ikaruga. he saves her and her nobility makes her feel in his dept. she switches sides, gets her ship updated to ikaruga standards and fights besides shinra.
weeeeeeee.

Thanx gekitsu,
I had no idea : ) .. I wish they used the art with some sorta cutscenes inbetween missions.. but I donno if that would break me outa the Ikaruga Zen. HA ... man that game is sweet!.. what's your longest chain? I landed a 67 chain on the first level.. but that's as far as I got..
Speakin' of bad-ass shooters Panzer Dragoon's got some very origional mech designs.. very very origional.
http://moonapples.com/lagi/index.html this site is worth checking out to see their developement of concepts thru series .. which has spanned almoast a decade now..
Panzer Dragoon Orta seamlessly wove the story in with the action... that's how it should be done!

sammy: yeah, it's the absolute best game for shooter lovers :) everything is great: art & design, gameplay, music, replayability, fun...
dakardaur: i guess a large part of sammy's finds is due to a very specific search. he isn't like "i'll search google for 'mech' and see what happens" but he knows some games that have great designs (ikaruga, orta, steel battalion) and can search for these directly.
now that i think about it, the mech designs of the metal gear series are pretty impressive, too. especially the artwork by yoji shinkawa (for metal gear solid and metal gear solid 2) is cool.
