Welcome to the Drawfest Group of New Zealand
To those of you who don't know what Drawfest is-
Drawfest is a gathering of artists, cartoonists and designers.
The main activity of the event is simply just to draw and to meet new people with similar interests or skills.
There are, of course, other activities involved (such as, eating and watching films, participating in events and commissioning/selling work.)
It is often comprised of armature artists and beginning freelancers, but is slowly growing to encompass more people with more variation. We are also interested in guest artists coming and presenting their work and experience and would greatly appreciate it.
It is a non-profit event with artists in mind.
Drawfests are usually held once every two or three months.
Notice will be put up for the date, time and place for the next Drawfest soon.
Feel free to ask any questions about this event or check out its page on deviantart (http://drawfest.deviantart.com/).

The next Drawfest is on Saturday, 12th of January 2008.
It will be held at Graphic Novel Cafe (99 Shortland St) on the corner of Shortland St and Princes St in the central business district of Auckland city.
We usually go from midday to around 8pm. But I'll try and get there early to make sure no-one misses out. If you're new and haven't attended a Drawfest please feel welcome, even if you just stop by to have a look, and don't shy away if you think that you need to be good to come. New members are always welcome.
Bring what ever it is you need to draw, eat, drink, ect.. Don't forget to bring previous work to show others and any prints you may want to sell.
Also, if you think this is the wrong place to be posting information about the event please let me know so I (or the moderators) can remove it. As I am less accustomed to conceptart.

Hooray for more NZ art events!
I'm so there.
On the other hand, deviantart reference... CnG... Hmmm... Smells a little funky to me.

While the event is still rather small and consisting of mostly armatures/fan artists and such. I'm doing my best to open it up to more than just the dev-art community.
Like you said, "Smells a little funky", it's something that currently may be true depending on your opinions in regards to art (and in some cases maturity). But the only way it's going to get any less "funky" is if you concept art people show-up and bring that more professional touch this website is known for. It's that professionalism which I definitely want to be present at these events!
If your still dubious, then just view the photos at the dev-art reference and check some of the other artists galleries who have been to previous events.
I really hope you come.

Oh, don't get me wrong, if there's an art event, I'm as good as there.
I've also informed some other art friends.
Bringing the CA touch is exactly what we plan to do there. ;)
You may want to post it on this NZ art forum, CGNZ (http://www.cgnz.co.nz).

Something tells me that I'm going to have to find bigger venues for this from now on. :)

hey dude, like hunter said, if theres an art meeting, ill definitely be there.
I cant really bring "professionalism" in terms of skill level, but i'll put my art geek hat on for this :P
BTW you added an extra ")" in the url link which makes the link dead, if you get rid of it, it would save a bit of annoyance :P
PS: i noticed you registered for CGNZ but haven't posted about this yet...if you're not sure where to post, we usually post art meeting information under the Art Discussion sub-forum.
PPS: you might not get much response cuz i think loads of people are on holiday still

Thanks for the heads up on all of those things. I'm not too worried about getting more people to turn up as of yet. We usually get between 5-25 deviant-artists showing up and last time was relativity packed. I've put info here (and will put it on CGNZ soon) because I expected everyone to be away. After the response I got this week from the deviantart crew though, I may have been quite wrong.
The event usually quietens down after 4-5pm so if you don't want to fight for a seat and get crushed into a room then I'd suggest waiting off till evening.

Don won the competition. Where did he hear about Drawfest? Was it here, or from someone here? Oh and Dan came a close 2nd, so if Don doesn't claim his prize you can have it. ^^

We're having a Drawfest at my new flat in Hamilton on Monday 28th this month. I don't expect many people to drive down for it, but we're also doing a workshop of sorts at Hamilton Zoo the next day. $12 entry
The next Auckland Drawfest is planed for around easter break as that's when kids and uni students have a break.
Oh, I came second? Cool.
Who's Don?
Don was the Irish cartoonist, who had the funny 1 frame comics.

So far this group has been growing at a steady rate and has had little need for a serious venue or big events for the attendees to participate in.
But it is growing and more quickly by each event, so I have begun to consider preparing and holding a much larger, mid year art event. I have been offered to join, in hiring out a venue (Mercure Hotel, Queen St) in tandem with another event, where we would each use the venue for 1 day. The other event happening on the other day would be 'Doujin Overload' (an anime/manga fan and comic event).
Nothing is set in stone yet, but it could be very soon if enough support from artists is provided. So if anyone here has suggestions, or just wishes to let me know what they think, then please do.
Things we've been considering for an event like this:
- Stalls with newest Wacom, Adobe, Autodesk, Mac products. Ect...
- Talks from popular New Zealand artists & designers about the creative industry
- Gallery stalls
- Competitions for prepared art & speed art
- Workshops
EDIT: Sorry, that's the Mercure hotel not Mercury

Just an update concerned with the Event on the 26th. Weta workshop has some artists interested in attending and giving a seminar and perhaps a workshop at the event.
The event is mostly run by the guys who have run Doujin Overload in the past and is still pretty much under the same name with Drawfest providing more events aimed at artists.
