Ok ... so ... new year, new sketchbook - I think that it's good time to start fresh, go back to basics and stuff :rocker:
I didn't get much feedback in the old sketchbook near the end so maybe new one will get more attention and I will hopefully get more crits and suggestions - to help me grow :)

Hey. You're back :}. Cool mutants.
I sometimes feel (from seeing also your earlier drawings) like you would like to push the design more but you're worried about making too much mess. Maybe use tracing paper during some stage so you can try out different things before you start rendering.
In the digital pic there is something too look at the top, bottom right part has something interesting but in the middle the picture feels a bit empty and not defined beacuse of the darkness. I had similar problem in one concept and I managed to solve it by introducing secondary light source and subtle reflected light that hits the deepest shadow. Generally if it's hard to define some form, introduce some more light. You can always later adjust levels to make the darker shadow tones more sublte :).
The textures look really nice. You're going in right direction with level of detail.
Pozdrawiam. I wszystkiego najlepszego w Nowym Roku!

Very nice dude ! I'm always impressed by the organic feel or your creatures.

Farvus - thanks :) I'm trying to get back to the forums like in the old days.
Thanks for valuable pointers :)
You're totaly right about details in my pencil sketches - I think that it's more a mather of how I approach them. I tread them as practice, to not let my skills rust, rather then designs and I make them simpler. You're right sometimes I don't want to overload them with details, because I overlook the main forms then and they come out all weird and messy. But still, it doesn't mean that I won't try to find a golden mean :)
As to the other piece - you're right, it's mainly because it started as a head and arms sketch with main focus on the head. I added the rest of the body later :) But I became aware of the issue you mentioned near the end and added a little bounce light, but I think that secondary light will be a better idea.
DanielC - thanks a lot, it's a great compliment coming from you :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today's update ... a little PS "sketch". I was experimenting with making a sketcbook-like composition of sketches in photoshop. Just like I do in my traditional sketchbook. It's still an early WIP - I only worked on the two top characters a bit more.

Creature design is great, rendering is nice, love the contrast you've got going in the first design. Only critique is they're all quite similar looking creatures, but they all look good is what counts! Keep it up, hopefully a new sketchbook will be just the right thing for you!

Hey Thirdeye, Just folowed u from Koppas SB:)
AS it was said before, your character designs are hubba hubba! They would make wicked 3d renders *hint * hint* Tech wise Ive got no comments or critics.. I believe you are past that. its just creating designs for you from now:)

great designs man, id love to see you get some colored pieces in here, maybe even some human characters.
I think alot of your grayscale pieces could be helped with some edge lighting to help define the texture and form of your monsters

Connie Cane - thank you :)
ACRO - thanks, it's actually not just aliens, don't judge themes of my drawings on just 3 of them :) I've put these just for the start - I'm actually focusing now on human characters because I'm still bad at them :)
IanE - thanks :)
marioucci - thanks, that's a huge compliment :) but I wouldn't entirely agree - I'm more crytical to my skills and I'm aware of the flaws and lacks I have and need to work on :)
koppa - thank you :D
Quick_Sketch - thanks, you will definitely see human characters and color pieces as well, be patient - I'm just starting :) And thanks for the pointer, I actually heard this advice about my sketches a couple of times :)
Farin - hehe, thanks - I'm glad I can make your dreams just a little scarrier >:D
Nothin' special today - just a sketch I've been struggling with for a while now, it started out as a CHOW entry (theme was "Herald") I already tried doing it in many ways - trying different lighting, composition etc. started with color but I flattened it to B/W after a while - to focus on values, lighting and the mood :)
I know it's not much but crits are most welcome :)

Hey. I dig your new updates.
Pozdrawiam.
PS. A... jeszcze co do oświetlenia tak generalnie. Polecam pomaganie sobie drewnianym manekinem. Do póz się zupełnie nie nadaje ale można go ustawić na biurku pod lampką i masz jakiś prosty reference jeśli chodzi o światło i cień.

I think your values improved. Those head sketches in top left corner look like next level. Rendering is also getting more eye candy.
Maybe just focus on shapes and designs before you proceed to shading. You already know how to make stuff look very 3d. Also watch out for the distance between bottom of the nose and the lips. For certain angles it's sometimes too big.
Keep posting :).

Hey. Really nice updates. I dig those more detailed guns.
In silhouette they look pretty good but I think the details give impression that thet're constructed from boxes. Little bit of looking at reference would help. Most importantly when looking at real life guns you will see that they have much more horizontal details in proportion to vertical ones. I would also cut or round some corners so that the overall shape is less blocky. To get more complicated surface you can play with different thickness and softness of shadows.
As for the characters and creatures. The last one looks cool. Creepy silhouette and that's a big plus for computer game design :). I would try to solve the leg structure though beacause it looks a bit unclear.
Keep posting, man. It's always great to see what you've been up to.

Hey. I really like your last character concept. It's definately improvement. More attention to detail, interesting costume proportions, different materials. It's also good you're using background values to push the contrast in the focal point. It's pretty simple trick but works perfectly for this type of designs.
I would add something to his one arm to break symmetry. Maybe he could hold pilot's helmet. Mayby try to push the folds o little bit further. I know there is certain limitation for that when modelling character for games but folds can add lots of interest to the character.
I'll try to visit your Sketchup thread from time to time. I love this program :)
Cheers.

Hey Farvus thanks a lot for visiting and the input. I will try to break the symetry a bit and I already though about him holding a helmet, or a flight plan pad. Don't know yet. Also I need to make his head a bit bigger I think.
Here are two pieces I've been woking on lately, first one is a Asaro's plane head study, recently I feel like I lack in all fields so I tried to focus on keeping both proportions and colors correct. Definitely I have to make lots and lots of these studies. Second one is a piece for a battle on polish forum, this is a space station mechanic, kind of Star Wars like alien species. I seriously need imput on him.
I also updated my sketchup thread... http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=146478

I must say ... lack of replies is a bit discouraging.
Haha. Welcome to CA. One day you got like five replies and other you got zero. I got used to that.(although I still like this forum more than max3d)
That head study is great. I might try it out too. Check out what I found through google images when I was searching for "asaro head" -http://www.pngholidays.com.au/upload/images/Asaro%20mudman.jpg :P
The space station mechanic WIP catches attention. It looks a bit like somebody stabbed him in the face :). I would work more on muscles of the far right arm. It looks a bit weird in biceps area. I also got the feeling something is wrong with that far leg. For some reason it looks much shorter than closer one. Maybe play with the foot position. In that angle I sometimes get problems with legs too.
As for the overall design. Maybe some interesting texture on top of his head. Maybe some more some more unique shape of that tool he's holding.
The head sketch looks a lot like oil paint. Colors are improving.
Keep going.

January 28th, 2009, 01:51 PM
i can definitely relate to the lack of replies problem. it seems frustrating at first, but once you internalize it and realize that it is in no way a comment on your art or your progress, its easy to let go of. at that point, its even easier to wield it as a battering ram and push even harder. take a look at algenpfleger (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=114449&page=84) sketchbook. that guy works harder than 95% of the forum combined- his early/mid posts contain hundreds of studies per post, once every day or so. the point is, if you ever find yourself painting something specifically to post it on the forum (i used to do it all the time) then you're going at it the wrong way. that's kind of like eating a meal specifically to take a shit. you need the nutrients, not the output ;p
whew. sorry about that. you probably already knew everything i just said. anyway, you have some really awesome stuff in here. my only suggestion is to keep your initial sketches a bit looser, something i've been trying to do as well. some of your figures look a bit stiff, which a bit of warm-up gesturing fixes right up.
keep it up!

Hello there!
At first glance there is no doubt that you have a pure talent drawing with pencil! Look, every artist got his strong sides and weak sides, you MUST continue developing your strong sides! Maybe you should want to see some of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. concept art, just for inspiration! Take care man I wish you luck and I will be watching you! - g

Hey Thirdeye, to be honest i don't feel eligible enough to crit your sketchbook but...
there is one thing that makes me wonder about your works, and that is... that there is hard to hang on any errors. And i think that's because most of your works are a bit to cautious, especially these drawing with such a careful shadows. I think that your paintings are better than pencil sketches because they containing bigger stock of risk. In my opinion if you put more risk in your future works they will be even better. The work i like mostly is these green swamp snakelike creature from your website.
Keep up the god work mate :)

I loved browsing through your new sketchbook. You've improved immensely.
Your pencils I always like, its shaded so soft and creamy, and although you can see each individual line, the effect is not hard at all. That takes skill. What pencil do you use? Standard 2b or is it mechanical? You've gotten so much better with your digital painting too. I want to learn how to paint like that.
My favourite is the sketch of the monster headshots. Your lines look different digitally but I like it. What brush did you use? It wasn't the standard hard round was it? I always have trouble finding the right brush.
Anyway, hope to see more. Upload soon ya?

Lone Wolf - thank you :)
shambok - thank you, I wish I had more to show, or more often but sadly I don't so not that much drooling for you ;)
Rodneydollah - thanks :)
Johann de Venecia - thank you a lot for those kind words, your comment gave me a lot of energy to get my shit together and do some drawing after a while. As for your questions, I use 0.5 mm HB or 2H mechanical pencil for most of my work, sometimes I sketch the initial composition or anatomy with thicker 2mm HB mechanical pencil.
Brushes...I can't really give you any advice as I also have trouble choosing right brush and achieving desired effects with textured brushes so I usually stick to standard hard round brush with size set to pen pressure and opacity from 30-60%. I also use some of Bumskee's brushes and have huge collection of brushes gathered around the internet, like Kemp's and Whit's from Massive Black brushes.
UPDATE:
If I can call it that way :P I've been going through sort of a dry spell...not being able to draw etc. But by the end of January I've started following Dave Rapoza's Crimson Daggers streams and doing studies... I still don't have too much time for drawing so I'm not able to do one a day but I'm doing my best to at leas draw every day.
These are two I liked from the past month...

Cool stuff man, really like that face study. Youve picked the tones and colours really nicely. The only thing would to be to tighten some of the edges of the far side of the face, would balance the looseness out, but it looks like a work in progress anyways.

Jasper - thank you a lot :) I'll definitely hone the one I'm satisfied with, add more higlights and stuff, thank you for the crit thou :) much appreciated :)
angelo cordon - thank you, yes I always try to go that way, block in shapes with bigger and decrease size as I go along to the details, but my process gets messy and sometimes the rule doesn't apply...and yes it's mostly hard round. I still can't use textured brushes that efficient :)
PHATandy - thank you, you're right something is not entirely right there, thou I'm not sure if I want to go back and correct that, still not sure how I should approach those studies, make less super finished ones or more less finished, but I will definitely keep what you said in mind in my next study, thanks :)

Chyba pierwszy raz widz u ciebie jakiś widoczek. Jest całkiem, całkiem. Wyostrzyłbym trochę oświetloną część domu i sylwetkę żeby lepiej działało jak focal point.
Mutant nietoperz fajny. Próbowałbym troche to zróżnicować. Poza tym to bliższe przedramie ma jedną krawędź jak od linijki. Nie wiem czy to było celowo ale wygląda troche nienaturalnie. Kości też mają lekką krzywiznę.
Ostatni koleś czadowy :).

Your initial block-ins for lighting are pretty good, but it seems you noodle your way out of good lighting when you render.
Something that helps me is opening a new window for the image I'm working on and keeping it small [25% of working size, usually]. I throw it on my 2nd monitor so I can make sure everything reads well all zoomed out and all the large forms are reading/lighting makes sense. Before I had 2 monitors, I'd just switch back and forth between the two windows. You could also just make the little 'navigator' window real big too I guess...
I like how your color work stays within a constrained palette, and feels real solid like trad work. I love the monsters too!

Texahol - thank you for your kind words, means a lot coming from you :) and thanks for the tip...I'm actually using that already - the small navigator window, I should probably zoom out to 25% too, at least from time to time, but I sometimes forget about this when I "lose myself" in the process :)

UPDATE:
I've been working on more studies and imaginative stuff, but don't have anything worth showing yet...for now I'm posting a concept of a near-future soldier uniform that I did last year for a startup company called Rolling Armadillo Entertainment, it has been a great pleasure to work with them.

Nice update dude! Thanks for dropping by my blog :)
Got a couple of minor crits if you want 'em:
The soldier dude you did for Rolling Armadillo looks really good when it comes to the detailing and such, but there are a couple of other things that sorta stand out to me.
I get the feeling that he's got too long a neck, in the turnaround back view the way his feet are placed makes it look like you've moved the camera up, and tilted it down.. so his upper body reads like we're viewing it straight on, and the legs sorta read like we're viewing him from the top down. Also his arm and hand read smaller in the side view as opposed to the front and back.
Hope I don't come across as too harsh, just wanted to give you something in ways of a crit instead of just an asspat and be on my way ;)
Like I said though, the detailing looks good, and the huge amount of thumbnails and design variations are awesome!
Keep rockin'!

dCepT - thanks for dropping by and useful comment :) you're right the turnaround isn't that perfectly aligned, I called them turnarounds but they're actually more of a "view" thing, because they're not meant to be modeled in 3d but sculpted for a miniature figure I think :) But still - thanks for the tip, lesson learned :)
Texahol - thanks :) I actually liked that, it's the part of the process that makes me most excited, finishing and detailing illustration is the boring part :P ohh..and they didn't pay me by the hour :P but it was worth it anyway ;)

You can still keep things loose in other areas of the painting but it'd be nice to see you draw the eye to more rendered out places. Great stuff! Keep posting and we'll keep sipping it up with a straw!

papervampire - thanks :) glad you like...about the hair - I envy you just a little bit..the chance to look like Javier in that movie - priceless :)
LisandroG - thank you, yes I tend to do that, sometimes it's also jpg compression - they look better as psd and then the subtleties get lost when saving as jpg.
prsnsweeney - thank you :)
Metal Fingers - thanks :) yes I have one - I'll PM you the link when I get home :)
Jasper_ - thank you, yes you're right it could definitely use more contrast and more material differentiation, I'll keep that in mind in the next one :)
Zebz - thanks :) yeah I know, that's one of my biggest issues - I tend to give up on a piece and not finish...but I'm trying to fight that :)
Damn that's a lot of feedback, thank you guys, it's much appreciated :)
Here's a study sheet - from MMA photos...I'm swamped with other stuff so can't post anything else atm...but I will, soon :)

Hey. It's great to see you posting more lately. The MMA photo studies are fantastic. The top left dude with raised arm has good form.
As for the two latest pieces. In the first one I think the blades need more attention. I would try to make more happening with that curve in the closer knife and add some rust or texture to that metal. It's sort of like beastman type of creature from warhammer so it can have more used up bad quality weapon. It's always fun to paint this type of stuff. Also the shine of metal could be more deliberate. Maybe a hint of something in the distance could improve the interest a bit beacause theres a lot of focus on the left side and almost none on the right side. Even some very dim moon could work.
The head hanging on the belt (upper one) needs more clarification I think. That's all I can come up with.
I think the second piece would look better with more happening below that hand. Putting more stuff there won't really distract from your main focalpoint. The placement, sharpnes and highlight of the head will keep it dominant even if you put flying dragons in that forest :).
Hope it helps.

Finished alien concept I've been working on in between jobs. I couldn't decide on his left hand so I made an alternative version. I figured that the guy on the left is a regular alien, and the one on the right could be a pilot, his hand helps him communicate with his space ship - sort of like symbiotic connection. Kind of like in Battlestar Galactica

The designs are getting more interesting and you're varying the materials more than before which is great.
There's no variety in arm gesture though. I did lately some gesture exercises but focused on torso and arms whithout drawing the rest (head would be optional) and I think it removed a bit my habit of repeating certain poses. You could try it out. The learning is much more focused than drawing full figure and you can draw more instead of wasting time on adding unnecessary elements. Also it's better to focused more on flow than proportion or structure in this type of exercise. Loomis stick figure is simple enough and reference can be anything from your own photos to comic books.
Hope to see more of course :).
