Heya all, and happy new year!! :yayca:
Here are my latest 2007 works:
Still mixing 3D and 2D technics,
Still looking for my own style, and having fun
I know i must be one of the only around to use 3D packages to create illustrations, and i must be the one and only to think that this medium has lots of potential as a tool for creativity, anyway... comments are more than welcomed :)

Hey Pascal! your pictures don't show :( too bad because I love your stuff.
And no you're not the only one who uses 3d here... quite a few people here use some 3d in their process, but in different degrees.

@rawr: hey thanks! hard to find your path if you know what i mean... its been a while that im trying to find a way to achieve the powerfull picts i have in mind
@Darkcult: thanks! i mainly use 3dsmax for modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering (vray) and i add details with zbrush and mudbox. then i touch up my picts with photoshop.
@rummity, thx! these are full digital sculpts.
M@: thanks:) i really try to push my palettes this days, evoluting feels good ;)

Hey pascal nice to see you post some stuff over here at a CA. I am still a fan of your 3d renderings. You seem to get alot of flak with the direction you are going with your renderings. I encourage exploration, truly inspirational images. I hope to see some more images from you.

the only detraction i see from this medium is the "plastic" appearance of the models, it seems to fit with the first, fifth, and sixth images as the texture seems appropriate to the character, but in the others it makes them appear to be action figures or some such, this has always been my primary dislike of CG... ...but in general, they're beautiful, who'd have thought i could fall in love with a candy cane demon from the future? :)

thanks for all your positive feedbacks guys, i really think that im close to find my own tracks, and your reactions mke me think im in the right direction :)
@ Living Rope: merci JS, j'admire depuis longtemps ton travail, j'adore la touche classique qui se degage de tes couvs. You're right about Druillet btw ;) im totally into a revisit of the 70's Metal hurlant ( original heavymetal) cover art: Druillet, Moebius, Corben, Caza, Bisley, Liberatore... thoses guys really created somenthing powerfull..
@robertB: im using a kind of "dirtmap" generated by Vray renderer, and slight occlusion maps too. i will try some cavity maps in next illustrations, they are good at enhancing tiny details ( Zbrush)
@bobo the Seal : thx :) But i feel i can still push it waay more! visually and themic
@Viag: thx mate, see you monday ;)

Im using 3dsmax9 for base modelling, Zbrush/mudbox for extra details and textures then back to 3dsmax for lighting and rendering ( Vray renderer ) and photoshop to nail down details, colors and finalise the pict

hey Pascal, great to see the new work. there some other quality to your illustrations that give them hooks in my psyche. it's not just 3d element but how you give character to these forms with the smallest of gesture and addition of personal affectation that.. I don't know , creates a story, a life for them, and some are just kick ass cool!

Neh! you're not alone. hahaha. you see. The CA freaks even enjoy your stuff! how cool is that? (These guy smells oil painting but still, they're cool).
m@ is right. Your crazy saturated palette is definitly making sense. I dig your last images too.
Take care bro'

Pascal,
Glad to see your stuff in here man. I've definitely checked out your stuff before, and you may even be an internet bookmark in my "favorite artists" section of my favorites list at home. I really enjoy this work! Very well done, man, very nice. I look forward to spending the next few years trying to get caught up to where you are now..!
I always feel obligated to offer critical feedback, because sometimes internet forums devolve into sparsely-populated threads where people occasionally come by and say "awesome work man!" This is really nice for ego boosts, but isn't really all that helpful. So if I may offer my own humble opinions, perhaps you'll find them somewhat helpful, or at least give you some ideas?
I guess my main criticism is that there doesn't seem to be much in the way of a story in your pictures. That is to say, you're showcasing extremely cool looking creatures/people, doing pretty cool things, as almost a kind of portraiture. I have found, however, that images which seem to almost a narrative, are much more engaging. Having a character - badass, muscled, techno'ed out - doing something which seems to be absorbing all their interest (fixing their gun, squinting into the sun, looking up at someone with alarm, even taking a split second in the middle of a fight to suddenly recognize their adversaries' weakness) results in a deeper piece. When the composition is strong, the character is awesome, and what they're doing is INTERESTING... it's the perfect storm. I feel like you have the two first parts down pat... your artwork is awesome... your composition is strong... your choice of colors are apt, etc... but rarely are the characters doing something that really draws me in.
So yeah, this is just my opinion, and maybe others agree, maybe not. And maybe I'm just trying too hard to find something to critique?
pascalb

maybe I'm just trying too hard to find something to critique?
Not at all, dont worry! You are right about narrative part, i could give it more thought from time to time ;) eeek i could even try some sequential art with my creatures that would be an interresting challenge
@E338, thx my friend, true tat i didnt expect that much open minded welcoming from those smelly oil painting geeks ( joking i'm joking stop hitting me with your chevalet ;P) that gives me hope :)
ps: yupe having a feedback from J.foster felt like a second chrismas ;)
@ Mandryk: thx mate, doesnt give you the envy to turn back to the darkside? ;)

Hey, been watching your work for a long time.
I'd like to make a request/suggestion. I'd like to see you branch out your illustrations a bit more conceptually. Just try and come up with something a little different from your usual fair.
This came to mind as something I'd like to see your take on: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=133&t=581471

Great works pascal, i really like the pieces, great pallet and action.
but pascal please dont say ur one of the few to use 3d in their works, and the only one who thinks it has potential? thats completely not true. While you works are original they are far from being the only illustrations using 3d models.

Pascal, you should hook up with Kevin Eastman and make him use some of your art as a cover for Heavy Metal magazine. Your work would fit there perfectly. Like a kick in the balls! (okay, that was a bad metaphor. But you know, your work has this feeling of the 80's Heavy Metal magazine, but done like, awesomely!)

Great works, Pascal. I love the Corben feel, great tones overall. But please, don't recreate his horribly disfigured women :)
Do you render these out in greyscale only? The emphasis on midtones is really delicious.
Took a look at your website (congrats on the kid! He's only two weeks older than mine.), I love your Brom inspired pieces, too. They really show off the strengths of your technique.
More, please? :)

Bonjour ! Aahh ! Encore un francais qui dechire hehe !
Awesome color palette ! I like ur cyclop's intepretation.
What about doing a fat female character for a change ? :)
The arms of the lobster guy jumping on throught the spears looks a bit " disloque", they seems to go too much backward but maybe its just me...

I like your work, mixing 2D and 3D has worked really well in your favour. I've seen it done before but the end results weren't as cool as this. I love the devil style face close up and the first image best. The blues and greens in the first one are lovely. Good pallette choices! :)

Pascal! I still go over the notes I took when you presented at that workshop here in Hollywood (you gave an informative and humorous lecture). You were also so cool when I was asking you questions during the break. Thanks so much for that. You probably don't remember me, but you gave some helpful advice along with great tips when we spoke. I'm still inspired and it's fun to see your work around here.

Been a fan of you work for sometime now. Nice to see you posting here on CA. Interesting characters, dramatic composition and very bold use of color. Great use of 2d and 3d for your illustrations. A perfect example of how and why software packages are just another tool in one's creative arsenal.
Wish my 3dsMax skills were as good as yours... You mentioned that you use zbrush and mudbox for detailing. How do you go about choosing which one you're going to use for your image? Do you find it easier to perform different types of detailing with one over the other?
pascalb
January 23rd, 2008, 02:58 PM
Actually i tend to work more and more with Zbrush.. i never stop to discover new ways of using its cool brushes, and im still learning a lot from my teamates at Ubi
Zbrush is faster and more instinctive than mudbox, but it's just my own feeling, both packages are really close to each other .
So basically i create or use simple meshes in 3dsmax, sculpt them in Zbrush and then back again in max for the rendering
