Your sketchbook is totally amazing! I really enjoyed browsing through your progress... it is inspiring to watch your developement!

And thanks for your character design tutorial in the tips and tricks section. I wonder if you use layer modes like hard light? Or would you advice to paint only with the brush-tool (coloring the bw sketch, adding highlight etc.)

Great color variation in the last beast! about the rendering, it´s always a pleasure to see your work.. If i can crit something, i think the blur is out of place here, the big guy would benefit if you maintain the legs as they suposed to be, it would be more natural giving the big size. I think he´s already enough dynamic :)
super nice work, keep us updated!

Cool monster Jasper. Thanks for sharing the process too :)

that creature looks really cool, nice colors too, but theres something with the human that just feels out of place.

He's too upright maybe? Just imagine something this terrifying stomping towards you fullspeed. I'd crouch.

rumpenstiltzkin Thanks man, I see what you're saying! I saved him for last, so maybe that's why.

Ludic Ah ok, thanks man! Maybe a bit too overboard with texture!

John T Thank you! You have some great work yourself!

Pkmike Yeah sounds good, a few people have mentioned it so I think you're right. Thanks!

NickyBeats Hahaha thanks man! Rocks are great once you get the hang of it!

p sage Hmm ok. I put the blur on the particles of dust and rock and stuff around the foot, to maybe show impact, didn't want it on the foot itself. Maybe some creeped over to the foot layer lol. Thanks!

AlexTooth Thanks Alex!

gurzy Thanks a lot man, I will!

PHATandy Hey thanks man! Get to it! Haha

Baudolino Wow thanks! Which of the two tutorials do you mean? The only layer modes I usually use are overlay and color, and those are just to put down the basic colors over grayscale. After that, it's brush tool on all normal layers.

Ricardo Robles Hey thanks! Probably a good call, motion blur is so tempting sometimes haha.

thirdeye Thanks man, no problem!

JulyZerg Yeah I was debating having him running away, as logic would dictate, but I just wanted to keep it simple to have a scale reference for the monster.

I guess it's about time I put some personal work up. Finally finished this piece. Spent a lot of time on it, trying to make it awesome. Gonna be the first in a series. It's the first boss, Queen Gohma, from the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

I think your first composition with the one-eyed monster (humpf) was much more striking than the one you chose as final. Awesome beast by the way, great painting. The improvement from the very first page (2008) is quite impressive. It is hard to believe the same person is responsible for both the stuff on first and last pages. Keep it up ! ;)

I flipped through the last few pages... you've got some plain awesome pieces. Bravo ! Also, thank you !

Edit : well, that tribute (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?162564&p=902357&viewfull=1#post902357) is well-deserved and beautifully executed, don't you think ?

Hey everyone, been a while since posting last. Not sure if I mentioned this, but I left art school about a month ago. I'm focusing now on really improving and getting better freelance work. I'm almost finished with that next Ocarina of Time boss, King Dodongo, and I can't wait to post it once it's finished. Until then, here is some recent character design work I've been doing for a client. Hope you dig it!

In response to Ludic and ChaosTheory, and anyone else curious:
I left art school because I felt like I wasn't getting enough out of it to justify the ridiculous amount of money I was putting into it. That's probably the shortest answer I've given on the topic, but it pretty much sums everything up haha. I needed to change things and try something different. If Jai and I can get this livestream going I'll more than happy to discuss it a bit more.

Anyway, here's my newest personal piece. Spent more time than I wanted to on it, so hopefully the next few will come out quicker. It's the second boss in the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. King Dodongo!

Really phenomenal sketchbook. I've been enjoying seeing your WIPs (and the final products as well--that goes without saying). The way you render textures is really excellent--I was surprised when you said a few pages back that you don't use photo textures, only overlapping brushes. Any chance you could elaborate on that? I'd love to be able to bring more texture into my own work (and the sharpness in your rendering is great, too!)

As far as critiques go (I feel almost wrong critiquing someone so much more skilled than myself, but that's what these forums are for, yeah?), I'd say that King Dodongo up there needs some kind of foreground element--the rocks and lava cracks are marvelous, but adding something closer in the foreground would help to push the depth and establish a sense of scale for the creature. Other than that it's great.

Anyway, sorry for the super-long post. Loving the sketchbook and looking forward to more. :)

Thanks a ton for the tutorial, man. You really make it look easy.

It's true that Color Burn and Color Dodge are somewhat underused--I've never really found a use for them in my own work, but you've convinced me to start experimenting with them more.

On a side note, do you download most of your texture brushes or make your own from scratch with the dual brush and/or texture settings?

Hey everyone. I'm just gonna get to specific replies for now-

Meps Thanks man, but don't be fooled, that piece probably took at least 25 hours. I don't actually use 'texture' brushes. When I say that, I mean I don't use brushes with the texture box checked. I don't really like them, since there's seams in most of the textures if they're not high res enough, and the brushtrokes are not consistent. I much prefer to use the dual brush function, as those brushes are always predictable. As far as downloading, I've got the brush sets from most of the typical guys -Hannes, Min Yum, M@, Jaime Jones, Whit Brachna- and then I've got a set of my own brushes. I switch back and forth all the time depending on what I want to do. Mostly now I'm just using a set of a few brushes of my own.

Fellah. Hey man thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it. I've looked up to you since I've started on CA back in 2005 or something, your avatar pic was one of the first images I saved in my inspiration folder haha.

Everyone else, thanks for all of your comments, and I'm glad you guys liked the tutorial! I'll keep making them! Again let me know if anything is unclear or you want me to cover something else I do in my work. Here's some progress on the next Zelda boss from last nights stream. Still very wip, but I'll get there! Also, a sketch for an ArtOrder challenge!

Also, thanks to everyone whose been hanging out with us the past two days on livestream, we're going to try and continue on a pretty consistent schedule! Follow either Jai's twitter or mine for updates!

Nice gesture in that one man! I would say the wing membranes are a bit distracting though with all the texture. I would maybe recommend replacing that with a softer more transparent membrane that would allow the textures in the character to shine a bit more. I unfortunately never got to finish my entry due to work. :-/

Awesome piece, man! As always, your textures and rendering are phenomenal.

I do agree with MetalFingers that the wings seem a bit distracting--they could probably be a little bit more transparent so that the texture isn't so overpowering compared to the figure (which looks great, by the way). It also might be nice to see just a hint of the warmer tones from the figure worked into the wings.

(I can't wait to see the finished Barrinade painting!)

Reedux - Thanks man, I wish I could have too. It was like 3 days straight of hardcore painting, and I figured livestream would be a little too distracting to get it all finished in time. Also...you've played Dragon Age? hehe I've called Morgana 'Morigan' so many times.

alexson Thanks! Probably won't be doing any bloodsports for a little while, pretty busy with things right now! Wish I could though.

Just gonna post up a few random bits and wips that I haven't posted here yet, and put up a new illustration on the next page. Hi Jasper, I think you're work is truly awe-inspiring and eye opening. I read your first post that you are 17 and not sure if you can get ito art college. Well, I am 16, I may not be as good as you but here is something you should look into. Is your school or any other schools that are looking for young artists? I went into this art program where they give scholarships for anyone who takes their first sample class for free and even help you with stuff for portfolios and telling you which colleges give scholarships and which don't. Stuff like that!!

Maybe, if you haven't tried already, should get into this stuff besides selling yourself to riot ( which imo, should have you on their team)
but open yourself up to opportunities. I heard children's books and book covers are very good for freelancing to make up money for college. And plus maybe it would open yourself up to a different part of art you never knew about. You're art seems very like league of legends and WoWish, which is amazing. I am sure you will achieve your dream, don't let money ever bring you down because you can always obtain it!

edit: hope this was useful

So. Awesome. Good luck with Wizards and EA! I'm sure you'll blow 'em away :D

Also, that last illustration looks great! I like how you used that bright blue light to pick out the focal points. The only criticism I have for it is that you have so many high-value, high-saturation spots in the foreground (the energy, the figure, the flower petals, etc.) that the background is almost completely lost. Even when I try to look at it my eye keeps shifting back to the figure. Granted, that could also just mean you're doing a good job of keeping the viewer's eye on the focal point, so if that's what you were going for, good job. Wow, that was rambly. Just food for thought XD

skMOP Well I did them for a contest to hopefully get some exposure. Unfortunately, none came. lol. I only played the game for a month to do the art.

Marlo Hehe I'm not 17 anymore, turned 21 in December. I'm well past the whole college thing now haha, I recently 'dropped out'. Maybe I'll go back somewhere soon, maybe not. Wanted to work on my portfolio a bit and land some more freelance before I do anything.

Pigeonkill Thanks! Good point though, I hadn't noticed it!

merl1n Thanks man!

jedininjaman Thanks, I agree they may be a bit too sharp. Tried working a different way with selections. Disagree about the colors though. I find the saturated palette to work very well for the style of art that League of Legends uses.

DANKA Thanks man!

Alexandr Pascenko Hehe thanks a lot for stopping by man!

Reedux Ah yes! I'll see if I can post some up soon. I basically got the process from Hannes's tutorials on deviantart though.

midknight523 Thanks!

Fetsch Thanks man I hope so!

Meps Thanks man! I actually think what you mentioned is a good thing. I didn't want the background to take any sort of control of the image. That is basically all I wanted it to be, just a 'background'.

kischi Thanks man!

CommandoFilis Thank you!

Kungfoowiz Thanks a lot man!

Wow, just finally finished up a bunch of work. Now I just have to decide what personal stuff to do. Probably work on some studies and get back to Zelda stuff. Anyway, here is the first EA test that I took. They contacted me a couple weeks ago and asked if I would take a test. After doing this one, they thought my work would be better suited for another team at the same studio, so I was assigned a second one. I just finished the second one late last night, so I'm awaiting the results. This is just the stuff from the first one, done in two days.
