Check the last page's bottom for new stuff! :)
('cause the stuff on the first page here is old crap. seriously.)

Hi everyone! I'm Kristina, 19 years old, from Germany, and I have to practice more. Bobby Chiu said the greatest motivation for a painter is to envision what you will have after painting and practicing, and he is so right!

I can't do any finished stuff right now, but I feel so inspired by people and their art everywhere. Solution: lots of speedpaints :D

I painted those in December, using Photoshop and my wacom tablet. I set myself an 1 hour time limit for each of those.

I'm struck by how the thumbnail of the last work looks different than the larger pic. In fact, the thumb has a completely different and interesting emotion.

Spocksleftball - perhaps that's because of the real close cropping? I don't know xD

Making drawings after old master paintings... I so wish I had a life drawing class now, but for now, copying will have to suffice.

Very impressive studies! Especially those life drawings, I like how few lines you use to establish the form. Keep that up, it'll certainly get you forward :)

As for the digital paintings, they're looking very pro, it's obvious you're getting confident in that area. No crits here really, just keep doing this and you'll improve. Very nice sb!

Cool stuff Kristina! I really like your pencil and charcoal studies. All of your stuff is very similar, having a soft and almost ethereal feel (which is cool), but I thought maybe it would be cool to see what you could do with a different style. Maybe something more rough and sketchy. I noticed in some of your work that you tend to have some sketchy lines that you put over top of everything at the end, which gives it an interesting contrast, so maybe you could push that even more. I think it could end up leading to something really cool. Anyway, just a thought. Tschüss!

wo liegt denn Meerbusch? ;)

Well first of all really nice speed paintings, i think you don´t do wrong to study other artista, especially the old masters.
Nevertheless common study of anatomy and composition/lighting is definitely a must.
From my own experience doing speedpaintings is a great thing, to get the essential on digital paper as quick as possible.
Nevertheless doing finished work is something you should do, because there u learn different things and difficulties which you don´t learn from speedpaintings.
And also u have some "real" work done, which is quite satisfying... for a few days...

So keep going!

They can be found in my Deviantart gallery (http://maidith.deviantart.com/gallery) or at my portfolio website (http://www.mondhase.com). Hey Maidith, beautiful sketchbook! I agree with the others - all of your paintings have such a calm, dreamy mood to them. One thing I would watch out for though is that the female characters in your speedpaints all have similar looking faces. Doing face studies from photos could help mix it up a bit. :)

I also really like your master studies. In fact, I think I'm gonna try some of those myself now. :P

Weiter so :mod:

btw. war deine vorherige Domain mondhase.de? Kann es sein das du mal ein Tutorial über die Verwendung von layern bei PS gemacht hast?

Hi Saskia, great to see you here too! :D Thanks so much for the input, I am quite aware of the fact that I have to improve my anatomy and that I need do do more life drawing.
There's nothing I'd love to do more at the moment. I really, really want to draw the nude figure from life to learn how it "works", and because I have to improve my figure drawing. Since life drawing classes are friggin expensive (speaking from experience) I'll save that money for art school instead.
Not just any art school but that kind of art school where they do lots of life drawing. That kind of art school is the one I want to attend. There aren't any such art academies with a classical-academic approach here in Germany, but they exist everywhere else, and I will do my best to get into one of them in order to draw and paint LOTS from life. I truly want to do that. Those art schools are mostly private institutes of US american artists, and are very, very expensive, but as mentioned, I'm saving my money already and there are art scholarships and scholarships for the disabled. Right now, I have my computer and tablet and will practice digital painting and technique as much as I can. Probably I won't have the time to do that later. :(

Yup, my website was and is mondhase.de and now also mondhase.com :) I don't remember having done a tutorial about using layers in PS, but I have a painting technique tutorial here: http://www.mangarevolution.com/tutorial_display.php?tutorial_id=305

Aber egal.
btw.

Xaya, thank you :) I'm actually glad you mention William Turner, since he's my favorite artist of all time, and I aimed this piece to look somewhat inspired by him.
The funny thing is that when this painting was shown at a group exhibition in Düsseldorf, someone mentioned that it certainly had to be inspired by the work of my highschool art teacher Jürgen Jansen (http://www.galerie-robert-drees.de/index.php/drees_en/kuenstler/juergen_jansen), which couldn't be further from the truth. His paintings are abstract too, but then, totally different.

Death of Giuliano
Tools: Photoshop 7, Wacom Intuos tablet
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/3828/deathofgiulianoju6.jpg

Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, April 26, 1478:
Lorenzo de' Medici, governor of Florence, and his younger brother Giuliano were attending High Mass, unaware of the fact that a conspiracy had been set up with the aim to kill them. Two assassini disguised as monks eventually appeared during Mass, killing Giuliano de' Medici. Lorenzo got wounded but he could escape with the help of his friends.

I know the dagger/sword looks kinda bent, but: I wanted it to be a knife or dagger (or just a very small sword). And I wanted to show the rushed movement by which it is pulled out of the victim (yeah, very gory, I know...) It's supposed to be a short weapon, the lines following it indicating the speed. I messed a little here.

hey Kristina,
you got some really inspiring color sketches in here.can't critique anything on colors or shading style as it's looking excellent. just keep studying your anatomy as some of the figures seem to have skewed headforms or slightly distorted hands. and some of you figures could use more diversity in their faces. they look too similar, but I can already see improvement.
love "1925" and the last two sketches from life. you should do more of those.

Kristina, I've seen your work on GFXartist, I really like the way you capture your colors, all of which have a dreamy feel to it. Glad to see you working on your anatomy. As for the distortion, a solid line foundation in your paintings could help a lot, and also perhaps less attention to detail and more to form. Keep up the good effort!

Maidith
February 17th, 2008, 04:01 AM
Farsh, thank you :) You're right, painting works best only if one has strong drawing skills. I'm working on those, making lots of drawings from life.
(The link to your sketchbook in your sig does not work, by the way)

Recently I bought this book (http://www.amazon.de/Artists-Complete-Guide-Figure-Drawing/dp/0823003035/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1202482618&sr=8-1) and it is really good stuff. The author (who is an awesome painter) shows the progress of a figure drawing from life and advises to start the drawing by "enveloping" the figure in a simple shape consisting of lines and corners. He says "You'll save time if you learn to do so"; me thinks "o really"?, and tries it. It works quite well. I'll get accustomed to it either way :D It can only be good to try something.

Title: Death of Salome

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k169/herzknochen/Death_of_Salome_by_Maidith.jpg

Story:
Salome - in the Bible - was the daughter of Herodias who asked her to dance in front of the king so she could demand the head of St John the Baptist as a reward - which she did. The severed head of St John was presented to her on a silver plate.
And this is how Salome herself died. According to the legend, she was dancing on ice when the ice broke and she fell into the cold water. Her mother Herodias tried to save her, but all her efforts were vain. The sharp pieces of ice eventually cut Salome’s neck and thus severed her head from her body. So she died just like the prophete whom she had brought to death.
True or not, I found the legend fascinating and painted my own version of it.

And yes posemanicas liks Butts for some reason :)

As a critique however the image with the girl holding the wineglass just feels weird to me. The face is booth to small but also lacking in features, and lacking an upper part of the head also the eyes are really high up. I'm sure this was intentional but still the effect to me is just like the head was forgotten.

Thanks for hitting up my book :) Love your stuff keep doing what your doing.

I really thing you should study and incorporate some the shapes and deail found in the neck area for your digital work.

Some of your necks feel out of place possibly because they don't have the same realistic quiality your heads do - get that collar bone in to suggest the changes in direction in the chest and where the muscles join - the visible muscles in a twisted or tense neck, and sometimes more femanine curves in that region.

The above features are seen here and there, but go through your last page and see if you agree with me with your digitals

You have nice colors and lighting but I dont need to further clarify what most people here are saying :)

that still life is great, its awesome that your not just focusing on just one medium!

In the painting in #106 you have some alignment issues where the eyes nose and mouth arent on the same parallel - though the mouth has a pretty big movement range and is more forgiving for expression :) skewed features is something that always jumps off the page so double checking them in the future would be great.

Room, drawn with a so-called proportion checker (proportional divider). This tool is beyond awesome! Had I measured everything by eye only, it'd haven taken me more time and frustration to make an accurate drawing. However, with the proportion checker it took me only about 15-20 minutes and was very easy.
Watch this to see how it works: http://www.thecardermethod.com/clips.html

Hey!

Nice stuff. The colouring is great, the lines too, but the proportions, as was said earlier, could use some work. I can only imagine how great they would be if you keep studying your anatomy (which you already seem to be doing, good job on that!).

I really like that oil painting of the "little tiger plushie"; it's just really nice to look at, haha. "Swamp" and the studies from this page look great too. I think one thing you need to watch for is the eye placement in faces from your imagination: the eyes often seem too high in these. Good luck!

Really great studies, you're improvement in general is also inspiring. It's coming along the good way. Your study recommendation in another topic was helpful.

Maidith
April 11th, 2008, 09:02 AM
Sebastian - thanks :) it's actually very simple :) You look at the image you want to copy; and try to "envelope" it into a big, simple shape, and draw that shape on paper. Then, you find the outer contour of the figure/image and draw it inside that envelope. The envelope allows to see and check proportions better. And when you have drawn the outer contour, you draw the details "inside" the figure. It takes some practice but in the end it saves time.

Whitevillage, thank you :) I'm glad if it was helpful.

I was really inspired yesterday evening; so even though I had an Abitur exam today, I painted some environments at night. They're done from photos, no colorpicking, about 10 minutes each.

i would think L would look even more emo though =P I totally love DN too...have you watched the movie? and these ppl:
http://behindinfinity.deviantart.com/gallery/#Death-Note

as for the char concepts, i'm not sure how i feel about the lineart being with the soft shading...i would either change the line color to something softer looking (like dark brown maybe) or vary up the line quality. or maybe throw in some harder shadows/lites.

also perhaps the sides of the top lip should overlap the bottom on the outer edges a bit more. it's only really apparent on the girls...i know you're prolly going for a winged look but it looks a little strange.

Hey there, congratulations on your Abi! Now go study something art-related or I'll poke you with sharp stick!

Good dedication with the last studis, although I think a lot of them little peopple have awkward proportions. Just because you copy them from a 2D-Source doesn't mean you don't have to think about where those bosyparts are in space. That happens quite frequently with you drawings actually. look here: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k169/herzknochen/artsystuff/kiddo1.jpg

Moin moin,

thx for stopping by and comment my sb.
great studies and skechtes you got in here! seems to be that you'r quite busy doing all those stuff.
Would like to know if you've integrated the envelope-technique in your lifedrawing process or if it was just a test? For myself I use some kinda modified approach .. dont have the patience and often also no time to use it in the way it is described in the book.

shamandalie - thank you :)

shardana, thanks! I will ^^

Azalin, thank you :) I'm going to attend Angel Academy of Art in Florence, starting autumn this year. If German art schools are good... depends on what you want to learn! If you want to do classical academic painting, forgetaboutit, there's no such thing here. But if you want a little bit of everything (including the artsy fartsy ;) ) german art schools are for you. I live near Düsseldorf Art Academy, it's very very crazy there. not my sort of things, but students do enjoy it :)

Farin, thank you :) I haven't intergrated the envelope technique into my life drawing (yet), I don't even have real life drawing classes yet. Hope that'll change soon!

Today's worth of Bridgman studies, and studies from stock photos. And also some from imagination.

Wow you're going to Florence? Sounds pretty elite, haha! Good luck with that, and great anatomical studies, in the last batch, as well! I know you're doing great and I am in no way in a position to make advices but if you're doing anatomy or, any study that is, try to find your own personal way of constructing and displaying the subject. If you are more comfortable with beginning at the feet, do it! :D Just don't let others tellyou how to construct, because in the end, that's your path of thinking and they'd tell you how to think. No need to not try out the pointers that get thrown to you, though.

Anyways, why I am telling you this, I don't know if you erase or not (I don't see construction-lines, so I suppose you do) but on some of your mannequins the proportions are still off, like in that one: http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8849/stock7zg7.jpg
When you start thinking and making your OWN landmarks, you will memorize the figure much faster and the structure will benefit as well.

Anyway, off to an extraordinary art-career for you!

It's been a while since i last visited your sb , thing are coming along pretty nice , but i still see some problems with volumes , they are looking kinda flat. Maybe you should stop doing studies after the masters or after photos for a while , and start going out , in mall's, park's and other crowded places , it will help you a lot , a lot. Most of the people are shy of this , sketching other people , drawing in public , but believe me , nobody cares that you are sketching them :). Good luck ... can't wait to see the progress in a few pages from now.

Faust - elite, haha, thanks a bunch ;) I'm using whatever approach feels most comfortable to me - it's just my eyes that need more training. Looking at a subject and translating it into lines 100% accurately is so darn difficult that at Angel Art School in Florence students spend a whole year learning just that. And I try to do all these wiithout erasing, I used a ballpen.

bakatron - here's some portraits with stronger contrast! :)

Peter Berkovski - thank you! <3

flamable - thanks a lot! :D drawing in public, I'll hopefully get used to that, some day.

Flaskpost - thank you too :)

zou - Thanks :) I don't know Robulus, do you have links about him?
I'll post my Florence stuff here as well =) That means probably only Bargue drawings and life drawing sketches the first year.

Trashy, thank you! :D

Here's the new stuff. Some wee life drawing. I went to a life drawing class with my host sister where they needed some (unpaid) models really bad. So we both modeled there (dressed) and in exchange for that we could draw a lot there as well.

And I almost fainted during modeling. Bad circulation. That was embarassing x]

Hey! It's been a while since I checked your work out. Angel Academy, is it? Congrats! That's an amazing school, I'm looking forward to see your work from it :)

Your colouring has level upped many times since I peeked in last! Wow, your skin colours especially, they've gotten so natural. However, it's mainly the basic anatomy that's still throwing you off ocassionally. But I think you know that yourself and it seems like you're tackling the issue, so all the best of luck to you :)

Very nice sketchbook here. Good studies. You seem to have some problems with drawing heads/faces. Often on your portraits eyes are placed strangely which gives the face an unnatural look. It's not always evident then you draw/paint a face in front view. But then you paint turned heads it becomes much more evident. I suggest you spent some time studying head/face proportions, check out Ron Lemen's head tutorial here on CA http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=84105 to get started.
I'm sure it will help. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for stopping by! Looking at your latest work, your anatomy still seems off on some of the subjects, especially the heads/faces. Your anatomy studies on pen/paper seem fine though. That what strikes me as strange, on the paintings you do without reference, it doesn't seem that you properly 'constructed' the underlying anatomy before you filled in the colors and started rendering. Trace out the outlines of the figures in your paintings to figure out the hickies - they still don't match up with the quality of your linework. As usual, I'm fond of your wonderful use of colors, but keep working on the other aspects of your art! Once you have a solid grasp of anatomy it can only get better.

Drawn after an ukiyo-e painting, using a copic marker (brush nib).
I TOTALLY dig ukiyo-e, and I think it's even great for practicing because it forces you to exactly think about where you place what line and errors won't be forgiven, plus you need to maintain a flowy and elegant line quality. It's not as easy as it looks.

Its great to look at your sketchbook, a real pleasure to see your studies and drawings. You draw and practice so much that you turned into an inspiration, looking at your stuff makes me want to draw.

And, while i prefer the ladies, its pretty nice to see someone drawing boys too. Its funny that most people, even ladies, end up always drawing tons of naked females and almost no males. Good to see someone doing something different.

yes, youre proberly right. but so big! it kind of makes me feel very... eh... small. and no not that i arent't ok with my self. your proportions are very good but at that part you could use some more studies :smaller:(not that u will mind).
but realy just try sometimes i think your work is very nice but i think evryone is a bit distracted by his "wee wee" nice name btw. mayby in a bit less exited condition your man will even look more manly. now the just look like some teenagers with a... eh.. big WEE WEE. look at something like David from mischelangelo he is naked and you can see that it is a man but his wee wee doesn't distract you from his thinking look and your fist guess isn't that he's thinking about his girlfriend. is it? actually crasy that i'm talking about a guys penis for so long. "keep it short" is a good tip for both of us.:^^:

ps: like the rest of it very much.
we of the other 50% of the worlds population has a better excuse than you girls. the secrest is lots of Testosterone:bashful: and i think, as carbono said more naked woman are beining drawn, that naked woman keep there style and beaty much more. it also have something mysterieus i think, a beutyful naked woman in the woods:bashful:

Whoa! That new line drawing is a huge improvement, thats what I meant by good construction. Small things to hammer out before you start blocking it out - the foreshortening of the hand on the right does't look right yet. Could be the sleeve. The face is also slightly skewed to the right, but nothing you won't be able to fix. It would be fun though, if you rendered the mole rat like he is now. :P
You might want to use more rich brown/earth tones in your palette though, its looking really gaudy right now. Can't wait to see the painting.

Thank you Farsh :) I try to get things right before I even start painting... here's where this painting is now.

A couple of speedpaints:

(about 45-50min.)

Idea for a painting. Maybe I'll turn this into a finished piece some day.

Why has no one commented yet? Last post... the first portrait is just wow! You have improved so much, missy. (Yeah I went to your DA too.) Keep those works coming :)

hi,

i have bin away some time. you must do what you think is right. like the painting with the naked mole rat and the lady. i think te sene will be much more dramatic with stronger contrasts. de background more darker and te licht more brighter. Just sugesting

Like youre work

make sure in some of your paintings you figure out the proportions first before you paint it in. the girly guy has some major anatomy problems but it's rendered very well which looks kind of strange. i think you could also work on adding more details to your eyes. they don't hold up to how good the skin is.

keep it up :D

whee, thank you guys and girls :) (im in a hurry, sorry! cant miss classes)

Yay, I got internet at school! :)
These are sketches I did at Angel Academy of Art, Florence. It's not much, I know! But it's only my 2nd day ever here, (my 3rd, as of today), and we've been working mainly on the Bargue drawings only. Mine is 50% finished, I wonder if that makes me fast or slow?? Anyway, I'll upload it soon.
Angel Academy of Art is cool. I couldn't think of a better art education (for me). It focuses on technique and craft only, which I'm convinced are the only things in art that can be taught. And Michael John Angel, the founder, is really cool. In general, people here are really nice! And they're from many different countries - Sweden, Switzerland, Argentinia, Finland, France, New Zealand...
And Florence is really beautiful but also scary. With its number of cars and motorcycles, the city center looks like Mumbai at rush hour, but all day (and probably night too). Düsseldorf looks so cozy in comparison...

Life drawing is going to happen next week, yeah, yeah! These are gesture drawings from reproductions. We were instructed to "draw only the pose, not the figure" (that's essentially gesture drawing). I had to simplify shapes a lot.

Second Bargue :)
Had to redo it once, because I messed up badly the first time. Nonetheless, I still was one of the first in our class to finish it.
