A big step for my future

I joined up with CA because my professor pointed me to you guys and after looking through a few other sketchbooks here, I've finally mustered up the guts to post.

I'm going to an incredibly expensive private liberal arts college because I had no idea what to do with myself. I wasn't supposed to get into art, you know? But after 2 years, I gave in to my wishes and decided to be a studio art major. I'd really love to be involved in either animation or cartooning or something along those lines in the future but I'm worried whether or not what I get from this degree will be useful at all. If anyone's got experiences in taking classes in NYC, I could really use a few recommendations. I'm not really looking forward to doing another full undergrad program anywhere but if it's my best shot...

Wow, are you talking like Pratt or a school like that in NYC? (I forgot the other ones) Go find your school in this section Art Schools and Education (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15) You'll find peer-related and most likely biased opinions on it, but you may find some guidance as to which degree you'd be interested in.

I'd look for animation or illustration. The stuff you've posted is good. The second one is cute. I remember playing RO.

How many schools have you been to for college, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm really not keen on doing the full four years at an art school but, yeah, Pratt or SVA or Parsons. I've only been to one college (the one I'm in now).

I'm so impaired without a scanner or my tablet with me for the break, makes me uber sad.

Hi :)

When drawing people, always have a photo reference around. When drawing from reference always look very closely to it as well. You can't really draw cartoon people or any other type of stylized image without knowing basic human anatomy and proportions.

Keep up the work though! :D

yeah, along the same lines as MnM, try doing some studies from life. Hands, feets, faces, and full body gestures. If you can draw a person believably, you can generally pull off anything else. Giving yourself that knowledge of how to draw a realistic human will help in all of the drawings you do out of your head. It would be great to see something like that up here.. go chill at a cafe or a park or subway (people sit for a bit longer when they're travelling) and draw what you see, do blind contours to develop the connection between your hands and eyes...

I'm trying to do more studies. Right now I'm focusing a lot on gesture drawings from life. I have a bunch of them but I get home late and i'm often too tired to scan. I also feel really creepy when sketching when out in the city. I miss when we had a model in class...

keep up the work. that's fantastic that you've chosen to follow your dream to become an artist. i went to school for media arts and animation and pretty much did 99% 3d work. now i'm at a job where all i do is 3d modeling and animation. so i to am beginning to follow my dream to become an illustrator. i'm learning it takes more than 110% dedication and more than likely i'll be going back to school for a degree in illustration. this website has been nothing short of inspirational and continuously challenging. goodluck!

I got into SVA MFA Computer Art program and will be starting in the fall.
