After looking over mindcandyman's sketchbook for the fourth or fifth time, I finally decided to start a sketchbook. Hopefully I'll develop as he did ;).
I'm a little dissapointed with this one. I orginally thought to have the point of view from the stairs looking up into a distorted world (much like Escher). Didn't turn out too well

I'm pretty proud of this piece, although there are a few mistakes that I could probably fix (the purple in the upper left, lack of highlights and shadows) but I think it turned out okay.

I was trying to get in the habbit of tapping from my creative engines, but they need oil! A little rusty on the concepts, and this was a bad try at getting into the whole concept thing.

This was originally supposed to be a self portrait (well it is, minus all the accessories). Fun to do, but it looks like krap.

Since I don't have a scanner, I have been drawing more in painter. This was my first try at a REAL page from a sketchbook. I should really get a scanner

(Wasn't sure how many I could post in one single post, so here's more!)
This is probably my favorite piece, although the mistakes on the texture of the rock, and the water just looks really bad. I still like this one though.

I did this for a class I took over the summer, It turned out okay. The hair looks pretty "sketchy" though. And going over it with some blenders just makes it look worse so I just left it that way.

Just trying to do some more self-portraits. I have a lot to work on :(.

The apple looks a lot better in real life (tasted better too!)

I did this over a year ago, but it still looks okay. Well, in my krappy artistic view.

I did this as a study in a painter. I am really trying to learn the brushes, and which ones go well together. I heard from a few people that mixing acrylics and pallette knives bring out a cool effect, so I tried it.

This is some promising stuff you've got in here. I don't know what kind of time range these sketches cover but they definitely show an expansion of skill. You mentioned "math class" in one of them, are you still in h.s.? If so, what do you plan to do in terms of college/art school?

Thanks a lot for replying bgermain :). It means a lot for me to have you really look over everything. Yes, I am still in high school. I am fifteen years old, and a sophmore. I'm not actually quite sure what I want to do in life, but I have always loved building things, so architecture and engineering have been high on my list of things to think about.
The first post shows what I did at the beggining of the summer, going towards what I have been doing recently. In the past few days, I have been really focusing on hands, and it shows :). My development in hands has been extraordinary, comparing the hands I have done only two weeks ago to what I have done the past few days. I still have a lot to work on though! And I do mean a lot. Especially the coloring in Painter. The ones I did here are terrible. Hopefully I fix that too :).
Thanks a lot bgermain, you made my day better! :)

Oh also, here's something I threw together today. I'm having a really hard time drawing, so I thought to get through I just had to sit down and go with it. Terrible day.
http://www.redwolf.com/kyle/sketchbook/quickgirls.jpg
I've also been trying to get some concepts out, but I can't really seem to get anything to come out. I usually just end up drawing a bunch of geometric figures that make no sense or just krap. So that's another problem. Maybe tommorow :).

You've got a good grasp of the female form. By that I mean you don't make the same mistakes that most people tend to make (cartoony "bimbo" type proportions). You just need to develop familiarity with the skeletal structure beneath a posture; i.e., how exactly does the skeleton look beneath a particular pose.
I downloaded your last sketch and did a real quick example. I don't ordinarily monkey with other people's work but I figured it's just a sketch and it's easier than writing a dozen paragraphs to describe what I mean. Please don't take offense.
One thing to remember is that (in a standing position) the breast follows the shoulder. If the left shoulder is lower, then so is the left breast. Also, in a relaxed position the elbow drops down as far as the bottom of the rib cage (give or take an inch).
You're a lot farther along than I was at 15 so I really can't crit too harshly. ;)

Man thanks a bunch! You don't know how much that helped me. I'm looking over it now, and just noticed how sloppy I was. I did that in about a minute, but that's no excuse :). Thankyou so much for that constructive criticism :-D *Right click, save!*.
Thanks again. :D

Oh and feel free to crit as hard as you can :D I'm mature! I can take it.

Okay! I found out what was wrong and all, sort of. So here's some images that have been lying around.
Just a really quick sketch of gambit for a friend. Since I can't draw guys, I really have to focus on making the face look like his.

Whew! much better than the other self portrait on here. I kind of like this one, besides the eye on the left..aggh! I can never get that straight, the other eye always turns out better, the one closer to the nose.

I like your stuff.
But you should try to go for better line quality IMO.
Lry longer and more confident lines ... not nervous, short and shaky.
Also while you are working or when you finish a drawing look for errors and try to fix them.
If necessary redraw the whole thing.
Try to get line quality and proportions right first
(do more quick sketches without shading)
They will take less time and you can concentrate on what you are doing.
http://www.bgstudios.com/WEBSITE/sketches/mos667a.gifI think this is a pretty good example of what your sketches could look like.
Maybe it doesn't help you ... but I know that is something I did wrong.
My head was always some steps ahead ... so I never saw errors in time.

Thanks a lot for replying!
Yeah, I really should look over my quick things, to look for errors and all. Those sketches of the misc. girls that you guys keep mentioning were done so fast, just so I could see how far I am along on understanding the female form and all. I basically did them just so I would have had something to put up that day. I really should stop doing so many nervous strokes, it just seems to happen when I use pens.
My digital work doesn't seem to be like chicken scratch, I think I am going to try and do more on the computer. It seems as if it is easier, easier to manipulate and use more tools.
Thanks again for replying!
I'll post up some misc. girls again :) This time not with nervous lines ad all.

Don't abandon the sketchy stuff; it's an important part of creating any work. Just make sure you don't stop there. This is one of mine that started with the same "scribbles" you have in your sketchbook.
http://www.bgstudios.com/WEBSITE/images/Wlfcovr1.jpg
You just have to take it to the next step (which is cleanup) and keep going. Also, avoid trying to find the "perfect line" right from the start. Even cartoonists don't work that way.
Signature is right, though, the confidence is somewhat lacking. It will eventually show up with continuous practice. You've got great stuff, Mos, keep going!!

Thanks so much Bgermain, and sig! You don't know how much you better you guys make me feel by just looking at this thread and taking the time to reply. You guys really make conceptart.org what it is. Thanks! :D
I'm trying to draw some more stuff up, but been busy partying! :)
Well, I'll go do some stuff and then post it!

These two didn't turn out quite how I wanted them to, kind of bad actually. I don't have enough pictures on my hard drive to draw from, and my mind is well... *cricket chirp*.

I did that during my summer in my painting with the computer class. I really like it, even thuogh the walls could be fixed, the texture on the rocks could also be fixed, and the water makes no sense at all. I like it.

I think the girl in the basement is excellent! Great texture, great lighting, great comp altogether. The only thing you might do different is increase the range of value (lighter lights, darker darks) and sharpen the contrast and detail on the girl to really make her stand out.
I think it's your best piece in here. Good work! :D
