nice to see new work from you!
have you ever tried some storytelling with your art?
i would love to see some poems/shorter prose being made to pictures
by you.
also it would be great to see some colored washes of some kind over your work..
just some bits of messiness.
just some thoughts =)
keep updating!

January 8th, 2008, 11:13 PM
your rendering is really beautiful, and i like the recent line drawings.
one crit i would have is to maybe experiment drawing with a completely different technique or drawing completely different subject matter. you dont even have to upload it to ca, just experiment on scrap paper.
I love your work right now,and i am really into this kind of subject matter, but as an artist it is easy to fall into a comfort zone. it is important to always step back once in a while and view things in a completely different way. you should try to expose yourself to as many different methods and ideas as possible (i feel like a hypocrite because i myself draw a similar subject matter repeatedly).
DannySketch
February 5th, 2008, 07:38 AM
really nice , your hatching is bold and exciting in a lot of places,
but i agree with myalias it would be interesting to see what you come up with, with another subject matter.
good stuff, cheers

Brendan N - haha, ran low on the blue for now, thanks for dropping in mate! Really enjoying the photograhy and colour in your thread, cheers.
_andreas_ - Thanks a lot for the imput mate. Yeah there are a couple of illustrations about but they are really shit, I'm working on finding an approach and developing the basics. Definatley need more colour and messiness going on, Cheers
myalias - Cheers for the crit mate, really made me think and try new things. I've been experiementing more since your post (still need to do a lot more) and finding some different approaches through it, not really much point uploading it at the moment though. Yeah defienetly, the past couple of months I have went into that comfort zone far too much and this update really isn't much of a vacation from the usual but I am doing more experimentation now than I was before starting this thread so feel like I am learning some new things. New subject matter is something I have to really concentrate on, been studing various objects but need to do a lot more. Big thanks for the input man... now, when you going to give us an update?Cheers Mate!
DannySketch - Cheers man. Working on it at the moment, trying different things, thanks for stopping in and the kick.
tensai - Cheers tensai! your work is mind blowing at the moment, those images using the lightboxes from the show you posted were fucking great, cheers mate.
Been experimenting with things but not much point uploading that stuff, so this is just some sketch stuff, cheers!

paperX - Cheers mate! It was from an old master's drawing (rembrandt... I think) post card I have, I'll see if I can find it online. Want to try some more of that technique with drawing from life, see how it goes. Yeah it's really just thicker but I'm finding it easier to get quick lines down with at the moment. Diego
March 4th, 2008, 05:26 PM
ahhh, the latest updates are really good.
One crit with the sillouttes, they really look like abstract shapes, you could define the eyes more or also use more simmetry. Also more recognizable elements to help the whole.
In the last pic, the first one is really cool and i could see a creature in there, obviosly you can in all of them because you did, but as clearer you do in the beginning it'd be easier to work it up later. Hope it helps dude, i'm playing with silhouttes right now too. Check for the pros' silhouettes and study them too.
krossj
March 7th, 2008, 02:42 PM
Call0ps - Cheers mate! haha thanks for dropping in.
Diego - Thanks for crit Diego! Yeah I'll try and build some up from a more solid foundation of shapes (tried it with some of these recent thumbs) and symmetry is defiantley something I have to try and grasp with these thumbs. Always on the look out for how others mess around with things, do you have any links to pro's thumbs or silhouttes? Cheers man!
Some fast statue, creature, character thumbs and a study and sketch, crits would be great. Cheers for looking

Better keep an eye on this place. Its looking promising.
You seem very comfortable handling faces and heads. You managed to capture them in 3D! Also loving those birds. Really like those mark makings youve done with the ink.
I think some of your creature designs are hard to read and need more visual clarity to them. It seems like youre forgetting about the form sometimes, draw them the same way as you would draw from observation and/or referance because you have some lovely observed drawings going on.
Flaskpost
March 22nd, 2008, 09:42 AM
OOH. More birds! :) IŽd love to see you introduce some few, well-placed colors on those inks. Just a dot in the eye of the bird, or a thin outline or something. Could be cool!

March 22nd, 2008, 11:19 AM
I absolutely love your ink/digital piece with the crow and the man's face following that. The way you render flesh on your creatures in the earlier posts is very smooth/soft, and believable. Your line weight is also very descriptive in your sketches. Awesome work! One suggestion, though. It seems as though most of your work is rendered with the same smooth texture that I mentioned before. Perhaps you could try experimenting with scales/tree bark/callouses? It'd be fun to see what you could do with it.
Overall, this is great stuff. Have some stars :)

ok, had an interview for an art school yesterday and I'm not sure how it went. Sup kross :P, i thought i'd check back again, so cool to see your from scotland or atleast live there :P (am half scottish half sudanese(african))
But i just couldn't ressist checking back on you sb all the creativity just got me hooked :P.
As i've said i love you shading so much and it so amazing that it's in pen, i feel pretty comfoy with using pens and draw with them alot but can never get shading results any where near yours, and pencil shading it's just crazy, shows you have so much knowledge.
I was just wondering if you had any tips for shading, as mines seems to suck if you seen my sb i end up shading too much and killing the picture or not putting enough shade usauly because i have like less than 3 mins to finish a sketch lawl.
Anywayz i was doing some studies, from some of you work if you don't mind it's just really great to see how you work.
Another thing is the way you draw faces, i lovvvvve it!! (well it's not like theres anything i don't love :P)
it really brings the picture out of the page makes it have a very strong 3D shape.
Oh god i'll keep on going for ever if i don't finish this now :} XD

Damn cool sketchbook. Your pencil rendering style is great - but the thing I like most is the intuitiveness in your composition. It is very fluid and intriguing. Keeping my eye on this one.

Hi krossj,
Thx for the tips you gave me, I'm sure to follow them up.
About the drawings, first of all I love your style (so subscribed :) ) but just a little thing I wanted to say. Try to push the contrast a little more on some of your drawings, like the quick doodles on the previous page.
Anyway, it's just a little tip but it will make them really pop :)
About the tumbs, the sillhouettes are really nice but maybe you could take them to a next level by adding some lighter colors to define the form a little more.
I'm sure to check back later!

Warground Zer0 - hey mate, hows it going? it's just ink, used pencil to put in the tree at first, then used an indian ink pen and rendered it out. went on to using a brush with ink, kept the brush dry and started building up the texture, the sb page already had a rough texture to it, so that helped. probably should use charcoal instead, using a brush dry wastes it, heh. thanks for dropping in!

Very inspiring work - great designs, not the usual stuff you see often here at ca. And I especially like your shading when it's a bit messy.
