I hope everyone has been having a great holiday!

Looking forward to meeting everyone at Seattle!:

With color commentary here are some of the more successful pieces I've worked on this past year. The order is newest to oldest. .....I did switch my major from computer animation to illustration in August.......

Enjoy!
:ac: :ar: :ai: :at: :as:
:ap: :al: :ae: :aa: :as: :ae: !!!

269481

A black and white of my pops I did a couple of days ago.

269482

I did this for a gallery show called "Tata Gala." The theme was boobs, but boobs with a purpose. We raised $3,000 for breast cancer research.

269483

oil portrait with a horn 18x24

269484

This is probably the most time I've ever spent on a piece. It's 3x5 feet in oil (including the text). Now I have a question I hope you guys can answer. How do guys that create huge paintings get good .jpegs? I worked with a photographer in a photo studio but we still couldn't get the glare off of either character's torso (especially on the young guy, his arm looks really off).... I'm familiar with places called scan shops. Are there places that can scan huge images like this?

For high resolution details check out these links:
old dude: http://webspace.ringling.edu/~fvallejo/ACCESS/CG320/john_detail_head_blog.jpg
young cat: http://webspace.ringling.edu/~fvallejo/ACCESS/CG320/eric_detail_huge_blogger.jpg

269487

ink and pencil, fun experiment

269488

oi,l not sure on size

269489

oil on small piece of wood from Michael's, sorry about the "polaroid," I'm not able to get a hold of this piece to scan it properly

269490

oil 18x24...I dig the colors that happened here and on the following image. I hope to experiment with colors more!

269492

oil 18x24

269494

oil and digital....Illustrates the exchange of words between Nas and Bill O'Reilly

269495

ink and digital...I really enjoy this flat kind of digital work compared to rendering. I have quite a few pieces in progress in this style.

269497

acrylic, ink, digital....This is the last of the images I did for the animation program. He was actually the main character for my proposed thesis (now dead)....fun while it lasted I guess...haha

269498

ink and digital, mostly experiment for light that I did for the "Stylized Animal Challenge here at CA.

269500

character design for an old proposed animation

269501

another that kind of looks like a rotten Chicken McNugget

269502

another

269503

stills...all work by me.....to view animation check out http://webspace.ringling.edu/~fvallejo/ACCESS/CG320/LS_FINAL_resubmit_fvallejo.mov

269504

more stills.....view animation at: http://webspace.ringling.edu/~ fvallejo/ACCESS/CG320/fvallejo_inOUT.mov (http://webspace.ringling.edu/~fvallejo/ACCESS/CG320/fvallejo_inOUT.mov) and http://webspace.ringling.edu/~fvallejo/ACCESS/CG320/ppreal_fvallejo_resubmit.mov

269505

Now the rest of these images are from the sketchbook but I think they can stand alone as finished images. Mostly ink and digital. A little watercolor too!

269506

269507

269508

269509

269510

==============================

So after all this I still am not sure I have a style....haha. Although I would really enjoy painting more.

Wonderful works. The variety Ive seen from you is amazing.

How come you change from animation for illustration?

I'm in illustration this year and I plan to move on to animation. But I wouldn't like to be forced to do 3d animation or the technical parts. Just learn about the 2d animation drawing.

.cheers

wowza, nice to finally see something FRESH on the FF section, absolutely gorgeous. since you're asking for crits i'd say the painting of the black guy with the saggy pants is a bit flat particularly the arms, i'd say his disfigured but thats just the saggy pants' illusion :P

great works, peace

I love seeing work like this on ca.org. Its so refreshing to see someone take so much joy in line and form and color in the service of expression beyond what we see simply with our eyes. The large ladies with the trucker hats are great, but the whole thing is great.

MorteM: Thanks! Well I switched because I truly enjoyed making the 3d imagery look interesting and dynamic, but since my program is so extensive we learn every aspect of the animation pipeline and we do everything from model, rig, light, UV, animate....etc. So I would spend 300+ hours on a 10 sec animation and only 4 hours of that we be spent on that visual aspects and tweaking. I would have liked to have spent a longer time in post as well. I was barely drawing and that was the original reason I went to art school. So I knew I belonged in Illustration. Best thing I have ever done. Where are you studying?

DanielC: Have a great '08. Thanks!

ciots: Thanks! I agree with the crit. Now soooome of that is from the glare of the photo but it definitely could have been modeled more accurately too. The saggy pants illusion is an interesting phenomenon, because when I would put the painting below my line of sight it looked very disfigured. The same can be said when it was above the line of sight. But when it is even things balance out....weeeeeeiird! haha

donkeyslayer: cheers!

MikeCorriero: thank you!

.PZ.: Thanks dude, see you in Seattle, it'll be bananas!!

nonie: Thanks, if I can get over my scars from 2 years in animation dungeons I would like to make the unicycle dude in 3d...we'll see

entdroid: thank you!!

Michael Jaecks: Thanks, I am a big fan of line. I think my life's goal is to find the perfect line. The less lines I make the happier I am.

AlexC: Happy 08! Thanks for the kind comments!

Wasker: thanks, nah man I love crits from all perspectives, have at it!

Barts: cheers!

Kir Nuyts: thanks Kir!

InvertedChalupa: Thanks man!

Wow 5 stars!!!! Thank you sincerely. That coupled with the inspiration overload at Seattle will have me working 24/7 for sure. I'll need it, this year will be out of control with projects.

CHEERS!
take care,

YOU FOOL!!! HOW COULD YOU ABANDON ANIMATION! (although you seem quite a bit more talented in your newly chosen field). Kinda depressing I'll never get to see a thesis from you. I'm working on mine right now... You ringling bastards always show up the rest of us at more conventional universities with your group projects and excellent instruction and overly talented students. We shall see who shows up whom in the next year though now wont we!!

I do really hope that you dont give up on animation yet even if you dont want to continue your schooling of it (it looks like you already know plenty to figure out any other bits you need on your own). Someone with your abilities could create some amazing stories with a visual theme that would be truly inspiring. Maybe after you graduate you can start on a project after work hours at your own pace. THINK ABOUT IT!

Aah. That's the reason why I'm so insecure about animation. I just want to draw :)
I'm currently in a swedish school called Nyckelvik, nothing fancy. I have plans applying for gobelins, but that school seems way out of reach. Some school in europe will probably get a visit from me in the next one or two years ;)

cheers!

kian: thanks!

hm333: cheers!

deltron05: thanks, that's a great compliment to be compared to Schiele!

el coro: thanks, I'll see you at the workshop!!

Matt Dixon: hahaha, it'll be a good battle, best of luck!

zenmaster: thanks, ill be around, I hope we see each others work!

alyssa milano: thanks, I think I did!

shadoman: appreciate it!

aesir: hahaha!! I'd like to work on a 3d piece thats crazy stylized....i have a few plans..haha...stay tuned

nobody knows: thank you!

ameri-nazri: thanks, I really enjoy experimenting!

bhanu: haha, thanks for sticking with me!

MorteM: well....if you just want to draw.....computer animation may not be the best field for you. Schools such as the Art Center in California, USA and Rhode Island School of Art in Rhode Island USA have good traditional animation programs and all you do is draw there. If you do decide to stick it out, then Gobelins would probably be the best choice, since a lot of their work has great art direction, Best of luck in your search/decision!

p.s. dont mean to be negative, but I have went two years through this situation and am trying to be as honest as possible. Be true to yourself and what you enjoy doing. That will always lead to your best work.

m@.: thanks!

Interceptor: thanks, cya!

Farin: cheers! I love art for the diversity as well.

Well this post is live from Revelations. Have already met a lot of great people. Looking forward to the first day tomorrow!!
take care and thanks for the warm response,

awesome! really colorful, beautiful lines, hilarious. The sagging post is classic, summarizes in one image the culture war that I have seen raging in countless letters to editors and school hallways. the ink and digital piece with the insect-heads is good, I like the tree. your work reminds me of Gustav Klimt, Kay Nielsen, Aubrey Beardsley. I'd really have to dig to find something I could critique, you're on a roll, keep rolling.
