Hello everyone!
My name is Martin Helmikstøl, and I'm from Norway. I'm 14 years old, and is quite new in painting, though I have drawn a bit before. But I don't have any real experience in it. I hope i eventually will gain some here, and of what i've heard, you are good helping people with exactly that. Hope history repeat itselves!

My biggest problem is probably that I expect far to much of myself. When i am going to draw something, and I have something to be inspired of, I compare myself with that thing (which most of the time is extremely good), and then I often just give up, because I don't manage to draw as good as that particular painting I'm inspired of. So the first thing I must improve, is that I can't compare myself to the big artists, or beautiful drawings and paintings.

In my art, you will probably see that I am very much inspired by John Ronald Reuel Tolkiens great books, The Lord of the Rings, THe Hobbit, Silmarillion etc. I'm going to try to draw some scenes from both the movie (LotR), and the other books.

My favourite artist has to be Alan Lee. What he has done in bringing Middle-Earth to life, both before, in, and after the Lord of the Rings movies is just amazing. He paints the scenes of Middle-Earth just as I imagine it to be.

Anyways, I'm going to wait some time posting my works, so I can have something to get criticism on. I hope you will help me improving my skills when I start to post it. I am just as grateful for negative comments as positive. Everything that help me improve my skills is very much appreciated.

Thats all for now.

Well, I lied. I told you that I wasn't going to post anything yet. But after I wrote in the opening post I started to draw straight away, and then I don't see a problem in posting them already now.

I'm really sorry for the suckish quality on them, but I had to take a picture with my camera instead of scanning them in, because the scanner isn't connected to the computer, because we haven't got the required cable.

Anyways. Let's get over to the interesting part: The drawings!

Here is my attempt to bring Tom Bombadil from LotR to life. I loved making this, because I think that Tom Bombadil is a very interesting and fun creature. Probably the most jolly, og probably even silly creature in all og Middle Earth. But at the same time, he is one of the wisest and most long-living creatures in Tolkiens world. I decided to draw a closeup, and not full body. I tried to make him look like a old, cosy and 'soft' man, just like I picture him to be:

And a bear. You probably don't even see what it is, because of the bad quality. All the depth disappeared when I photographed it and sent it to my computer. Hope you have something to say about it anyways:

And here is an older brushpainting made by me in Photoshop, from The Mines of Moria:

Hi there, Martin! First of all; Welcome to conceptart.org. I'm sure that you are going to have a great time here.

And now for the drawings. I would strongly suggest you to draw more from reference. This is going to help you A LOT. As you draw something, your mind stores the information, thus making it a lot easier to draw something similar in the future. For instance, I can reproduce quite a few of my drawings, even though they are months old.

As for the first doodle, the eyes aren't symmetrical. Of course, a human face isn't entirely symmetrical, but to a certain degree it is. The eyes have different sizes and they are not on the same hight. this would be correct if the head was tilted.

The second one is actually pretty nice =) You should work on the shading though.

And another tip: If the image quality is poor, just upload a smaller version. I also prefer to convert it into greyscale

Best
Henning
