I'vd decided to use my Intuos3 mouse, but it seems, well, dead. Nothing happens when I put it on my tablet. I went into tablet preferences, and it wasn't reading the mouse as a device.

I went online to find out if there was something I'm supposed to do to set it up but there doesn't appear to be. It says it's battery-free. Is it defective? If so, does anyone know if Wacom would let me replace it?

It's very unlikely there's anything wrong with the mouse itself. Wacom hardware tends to be flawless (insofar as a Wacom mouse can, in practice, be considered flawless). Have you tried updating your driver software? Are you trying to set it up through the Wacom Tablet Properties or by some other means- through Photoshop, etc.?

I'm just trying to set it up using the wacom tablet properties, but only the pen is showing up as an input device.

My driver keeps crashing, but I did just reinstall the latest version from the web, and everything else seems to be working great.

If you have access to another PC, you should see if it has the same problem there. If you're running Windows Vista, another possibility is that it's Vista being an asshole. Everyone seems to have unique and varied problems with Vista, and it wouldn't surprise me if that's the case (I've had particularly nasty tablet/mouse (not wacom) problems under Vista. The first thing you'd want to do is go into into device manager, under Human Interface Devices, and disable Wacom Virtual HID Driver. It doesn't do anything useful, and disabling it seems to clear up a few other problems, though I don't know if your problem would be affected. Still, it's cathartic to disable things in Vista, like a tiny stabbing at its heart.

Failing any of that, see if they'll exchange it. Another option is asking around if anyone wants to clear up about 16 cubic inches of space in their junk drawer for the price of shipping. These things aren't exactly beloved- we have stacks of them at the office, though they're company property so I can't really offer them away.
