new stuff on the last page! :D

Hello, happy people of conceptart.org :)
I'm, umm, new here. My name's Hannes, 19 years old, male, from Germany. I've been lurking around this place for quite some time and finally found the courage to join :)

While i always did a bit of sketching in and for school, the common stuff like doodling on your books, and a bit of manga-style crap, it wasn't until July of 2007 that I started taking art seriously. Around that time, someone showed me the world of Digital Painting, and i was off the hook, beholding the vast mass of inspiration.

So i spent the last five months learning to paint, and working with light and color.
Well, I found out that all of this is completely useless without basics, and I saw that anatomy is what I have to learn. So today i put my tablet aside, said to myself "Dude, you need to get better, start over", took my pencils and started studying some serious stuff.
That's why i came here, I'm sure that conceptart is the place to go to when you want to evolve as an artist. I really want to improve my skills and will be thankful for every hint and critique i can get. I'd also love to participate in some activities.

I won't post anything that's older than 24 hours. (Edit: Or maybe I will D: )

So here's the stuff I did today. I started with 60 poses from posemaniacs, 60 seconds each. I have a lot of trouble seeing the important forms and the essence of the pose, but i will keep practising that.
The next thing is some Bammes studies, i apologize for the crappyness of my lines and the bad scan, but please bear with me, as I'm freaking motivated right now.
Last are a life drawing of my cat and some non-reffed faces, also with a lot of issues regarding anatomy but ah well, I'll practise, I promise.

I hope I'll be able to update daily with at least as much stuff as today, I'm highly inspired by all the great artists here, I hope I did the attachment stuff right, and thanks in advance.
Cheers :yayca:

Elloe. Good job with the first post.

60 second poses are great for warming up. In fact I recommend that's all you should use em for.

Once you're fairly lose move up to 5 minute ones. Then 10. then 30 or howeveer you feel comforetable.

You seem to have a pretty good understanding of depth and know how to manipulate perspective. Your faces look rather geometric and unnatural so I would recommend that you spend a day practicing just them. In fact spend a lot of time practicing one thing at a time. It is the one crucial thing that has worked for me. The more you do one aspect the better you get

Other than that I recommend looking @ some anatomy books and seeing how the body can be formed down into geometric shapes. it helps understanding more.

Remember...success lies in the power of will. Never give up...and learn to enjoy frustration. Cause once you kick it's ass it will feel so good haha.

Hope to see more ~ peace

ped454, thank you so much! So much advice. Okay, I'll practice more faces. You're right, they look weird. I need to seriously study Loomis, I'm afraid.
And i got an anatomy book, but i still didn't find out how to break the body down into usable chunks. I hope that will come with time.

Zeitwolf, hello again ;) Thanks for stopping by.

hmanafi, thanks. Value studies. I seriously hadn't thought of that before. But I did some today, thanks to you :)

So, today I did some more poses, then moved on to studying Bammes again, bones of the arm, blargh. Then some eyes, some after Bammes, some with ref, some from head.
Some random faces...
The last two are from life, i did them after reading hmanafi's post and thought "OMG value studies", first is a drapery study (yay! :D ), just a towel hanging over a chair, second is a fairly crappy self portrait which took about 50 minutes.

My scanner should actually be delivering better results :-/
And does anyone know how to put those attachments directly into the post?

algenpfleger
December 29th, 2007, 06:57 AM
Woot, i found out how to scan properly :D
Some poses and value studies, some from life.

Hmm, i feel like i really should do anatomy and faces instead :-/

Carbono
December 29th, 2007, 07:37 AM
Nice poses man, i really need to start doing this. Loving the shading of the pencil on the last picture, very nice.

If you feel like doing anatomy, will not try to mix it with the poses? Draw the pose and then try to define the muscles with the help of anatomy books.

Keep it up man!

December 29th, 2007, 06:34 PM
Carbono, thank you! Great idea, combining poses with muscles. I'll give it a try tomorrow! :D

Flakari Leader, glad to hear. But how could i not be motivated, beholding these great forums with all those awesome artists? :yayca:

Flaskpost, thanks! I hope I'll be able to keep it up :)

So here's, with my newly found scanning ability, more stuff from this afternoon, making the second update today :D

Some Bammes studies, then some random faces, some of them with ref. Then some more poses - 149 in 3 days :D
Last for today are two value studies, some toy horse from my little sister, and a roll of adhesive tape which creative some interesting caustics, i failed to render them though, gotta try again soon :-/

And I still need to find out how to put attachments directly into the post :D

algenpfleger
December 30th, 2007, 06:47 PM
Didnt get around to do much today... some 60 second poses, some 5 minute ones, then anatomy studies after Bammes, and finally some faces.

algenpfleger
December 31st, 2007, 06:10 PM
Didn't get much done today either, for obvious reasons. And yay! It's 2008. Which means my I-won't-do-digital-for-a-while is over now.
Note how the second random faces page looks better as i drew it while listening to other music and hanging out in the living room.

theblueroom
December 31st, 2007, 06:28 PM
man i like your art much. i love the expressions of the faces.

Gadbury
January 1st, 2008, 05:44 PM
Some of those quick studies are really great, and like someone else already said, nice facial expressions on those quick ones too. I agree, music can make a big impact on the work, it does with me anyway, its almost become an essential thing to have good music while I draw !

algenpfleger
January 1st, 2008, 06:50 PM
theblueroom, thanks! I gotta say that one of my goals for this year is to really learn a wide variety of expressions, so i can give life to my pictures.
Mr. Gadbury, thank you :) And yes, music is an input just as important as inspiration through other people's awesome art :D

So today was the first day of 2008, and also the end of my Non-digital-period, which i decided on to be able to focus on studying anatomy.

Here's what i did today, some random girl, a few enviros (last two with ref), highly inspired by bumskee, a 20 minute apple study and a bit of Bammes. No poses today D:

Jakers
January 1st, 2008, 07:55 PM
Tons of effort here, just wanted to drop some more encouragement. The face of the last girl looks great. Don't get tooo caught up in those textured brushes, keep up on those value studies :) maybe try some black and whites from reference if you want a change of pace? All around your doing the right stuff.

I agree with the comment that sticking with one thing at a time will faster show improvement, though I myself don't end up doing that!

algenpfleger
January 2nd, 2008, 06:01 PM
Jakers, thank you! Encouragement is something everybody needs, and I must admit that all the stuides can get exhausting. But I'll keep going!

So here's today's stuff, bammes studies, a value study from a newspaper photograph, some poses and a quick 40 minute doodle.

Oh! I envy the progress you got:blahblah:!!
Those two environment with strong light from sky are my favorite among your sketch:D, though I can see your digital portrait is getting better. Maybe soon I'll fall in love with them.:P. Your work has gave me some idea of improving myself,

so

Keep updating, man!!

Zeitwolf
January 6th, 2008, 06:56 AM
Are you getting cleaner? Or is it just the scans :D
The hand studies are great. I really like them. Good that you're heeding my advice with the eyebrows, the bottommost face looks a lot more feminine, now. Now work on the right proportions of the face on the skull (it's all a bit small in this painting. The width of lips is in general nearly the leght of the nose and thus the eyes are too small too). And get some reference of the pinna, you know you can't help it.

algenpfleger
January 6th, 2008, 03:55 PM
UnSharpened, thanks! 'll try to do more of this stuff :)
Zeitwolf, thank you. No, it's just the scans :D I see you have a point there with the skull and face proportions, thanks, I'll remember it :)

More Stuff!

January 7th, 2008, 05:37 PM
Today's stuff! Didn't have much time because of university starting again an everything, but here's what i did. Some anatomy, and then I moved on to poses, but this time only 30 seconds, which is freaking hard.
Nothing digital today, but I'm gonna work on my WIP a bit more.

Zeitwolf, iceman478, thank you :D

So today nothing digital, just some hand studies after Bammes and then a whole bunch of drapery studies from life. On the last two pages I used some document liner which has an awesome feel to it, I'll use that thing more often.

Carbono, thank you!

Here's stuff. First are some characters, then some arms. Those ugly faces are from life, drawn on the bus. Can't draw a straight line with our bumpy roads.
The girl with the torch is the current status of a WIP of mine... don't know how to push it further, and think i lost interest. Any kind of critique would be appreciated.
Those poses are 30 seconds and they suck :-/

Trashy
January 12th, 2008, 12:43 PM
Hey algenpfleger,

Thanks for coming by my sb. I think you got alot of great things happening here. Really good studies and those arm studies are great also. Hmm...I need to do some of those.

About the wip your working, it looks pretty good so far. You got a great sense of color and nice strokes. I think it just needs little tiny touches to finish it up really. You could possibly add sparks to the torch to give it a slight effect. I dunno...I can't really critique it too much. The legs could use alittle more smoothing. If you want to get heavy critiques you might want to put it in the critique forum.

In anycase I'll be keeping a lookout. Great work!

Maidith
January 12th, 2008, 01:10 PM

Sedig
January 13th, 2008, 04:43 PM
Your dedication is great. You will make lots of progress. Drawing so much can almost be work, but it pays off.

I only have one critique, which may be the fault of the scanner: some of your pencil work seems to need good healthy black. In some places, you employ your darks very well, but in others your renders are slightly weakened due to the lack of a nice dark. Maybe try to think particularly hard about darks in a few drawings. If you like the result, keep it up. If not, don't.

If the lack of darks is due to the scanner, feel free to ignore.

Farin
January 13th, 2008, 04:52 PM

Xaya
January 13th, 2008, 05:18 PM
Alpenpfleger??? Netter Username... ;)

Well, first of all, you are on the right track! Study anatomy is essential if you wanna improve in figurative drawing and painting.
It is also great that you do imaginary stuff here and there, in your stage i would recommend to work with reference, especially with paintings, colored stuff.
The thing is that you just have to know how to create realistic skin, distance,
textures, color relation etc. In between imaginary stuff should be done to use your knowledge from reference stuff and other studies (anatomy) and see what you really learned from them.

So keep it up!

Xaya

algenpfleger
January 14th, 2008, 06:22 PM
Sedig: Thanks, i hope so :D And you're right about the darks, saw this stuff on another monitor today and it kinda looked... wierd. I think I just got to calibrate mine so i can adjust the scans properly.

Farin: Thanks dude! I'm from Chemnitz, Saxony. In the deep east...

Xaya: Almost ;) It's al<G>enpfleger, with g :D Thanks for the advice, I'll use more reference!

Wow im impressed with how good some of your digital is, to me it feels like its ahead of your pencils.

What I don't see in the drawings is more solid rendering..even though they are fast. I do like the overall style of how you do it, and its getting MUCH better as seen in post # 50...but it seems you dont have as much focus when it comes to describing the forms.

If your going to try the cross-hatch style of quick shading, might I suggest that you further alternate and think about your angles a bit more (going 90 degress and making a checkboard pattern is kind of flat to me), it can be pretty powerful and descriptive if you stroke in the direction the form flows...might need to make your lines closer together so its more consistent.

Otherwise your new eye studies are pretty dead on, and your great at the non referenced faces at this stage!

January 27th, 2008, 04:24 PM
RandAlThor, thanks dude!
Jakers, thank you for coming back! About the digis, well I lack foundations in basically everything, but the the second half of the last year I worked almost only digital, so maybe that's the reason. Thanks for the advice regarding the pencil stuff! It's true, I LOVE the way cross hatching looks, I wanna learn that too, so your tips are most valuable, thanks! :)

Great sketchbook here, very inspirational.
Your digitals and your pencils are also improving nicely.
And the amount of work you're doing is jaw-dropping.
I hope you will draw more full renderings with pencil and not just anatomy studies.
I think you're on the good way to become a great artist. Keep up the good work!

Btw: Could you recommend some good anatomy books? (Is that Bammes book you often mention available in electronic format?) I already have that Loomis book Figure drawing for all it worth, but it focuses on the overall shape of the body and not on the body parts. So I could really use some recommendations.

January 28th, 2008, 09:21 AM
your digital pieces have got a lot of potential!!! i've been trying to learn how to paint digitally for the past few months and its not easy. if you keep at this pace you'll improve greatly. ...and was that the LAUGHING MAN i saw in one of your sketches? A Ghost in the Shell fan!

algenpfleger

Novbert, thank you so much! Interesting thoughts about the pencil renderings, I agree, I have to do more work in that direction. And thanks, a good artist is exactly what I want to become :D
The most awesome anatomy book I know is The Human Figure by John H. Vanderpoel. Bammes' stuff is also extremely good, but very, umm, technical, not related to drawing... ah, I'll write you a PM :D

eskanto, thanks! Haha fuck yeah Ghost in the Shell = WIN!!

Really liking those arm studies on page 2 man! You seem to use hatching alot in your sketches, I think it would be beneficial if you started to use the lines to follow the forms of what youre shading. Its amazing to see the difference of lines that follow the forms and ones that dont. Im actually working on a charcoal piece in class and theres a part of a form that is almost completely pitch black, but but making the strokes follow the form its easily seperated from the flat background strokes.
Line exercises?
Id say do lots of contour drawings. Dont lift your pencil up at all; one long fluid line. work with pressure and line variation aswell and in no time you will have really strong lines : D

Great looseness in the last enviornment...I like how it is held togethere by the atmosphere and nice color choices. It really shows how important the base sctrucutre you work from is. I think it got foggy a little fast, maybe preference though.

I see those movie studies as being very benificial for lighting and color, and that you've kept the time frame for each short to support that. great.

Impressive improvement-- try using less lines in those fast gesture studies. Sometimes gestures can be as minimal as 2 or 3 long lines. Also, I don't think any bitmap programs like Photoshop and OC will save JPEGS with layers. It flattens everything. Keep it up!

Been experimenting with a little freeware tool called Artweaver today. Seems cool, like a Photoshop-Painter-Hybrid (I don't have either). The brush system is nice, but new to me, as I've only been using SAI and openCanvas, which don't work spacing-based.
So here's some quick thumbnails, trying to get some brush settings I like:
299883
299884
299885
299886
299891
299892

Two openCanvas girls:
299893
299894

This one was slightly reffed, learned a lot about brushes and values:
299896

And some 60 second poses.
299898
299899
299900
299901

I wish i would have done more today :-/
But I'll tackle this week's EOW, as it was an environmentoring assignment :D

Wow, so many replies!

ItalianHorsey, thank you, yeah, figures are what i need to improve right now the most besides enviros, and it's fun! Will do some more detailed ones soon.
Nistarn, thanks mate :)
smid, thank you, grils are alway fun to draw, aren't they? :)
yinteck, thanks!
Flutic, thank you very much, I'm always so happy to hear I improve :)

Well the hot phase of my exam period is starting, so I don't really have much time, but here's a chick i managed to throw in when studying assembler programming with my buddies at university, first time drawing with a ballpoint pen too, feels cool, kinda like pencil...
300701
Also did some Vanderpoel studies today, trying to get my hatching follow the forms, was amazed by how hard it was, it forces you to think a lot about the actual forms, really great, will do that always from now on....
300700

I actually felt like shit today, having headache and whatnot, but it's better now after drawing and listening to Yoko Kanno and reading the replies to my sketchbook :)

Loolarge, thanks a bunch man :)

Had my exam in machine oriented programming today, it was hell. They asked stuff we weren't taught yet, as it's a third semester's subject, and I am first semester, and 90 minutes were much to little time, and everybody think they failed :D But I at least solved 4 out of 6 tasks and could draw on the way home, so it was alright.

Here's sketches on the bus. I am amazed how easy this follow-the-forms hatching is, how much it improves the workflow, and how much better it looks.
301516

And vanderpoel studies.
301517

And poses, 60 seconds. reached 500, yaaay. And I learned something important when doing these today, I start to look for specific aspects of the pose, how the energy flows in the figure. Hard to describe, i shall do more of these. I also feel I begin to understand things about lineweight and emphasis I didn't understand before. Aaah makes me wanna practice so much more.

GiantRibot, thanks :) Glad to inspire. The poses are from posemaniacs.com, amazing site :O
Lotet, thanks, I will :)

flamable, thank you. You're right about the scribbling, I have to make my lines a lot cleaner.

So here's some messy sketches done on the bus...
302281

Maidith, haha, of course, yours are better, but mine have an advantage in numbers :D
Flutic, yeah it helps, get going! :D And thanks man!

So today! I got up at early, went jogging, then did some warmups like drawing lines and training eye and muscles and coordination and stuff, didn't scan that, would take too long.
Then I did some 30 second sketches:
302938
302939
302941
302942

And some 60 second sketches:
302944
302945
302946
302947

And some digi thumbs. Didn't work quite like I wanted, so I fell into a deeeep pit of frustration.
302948
302950

Which made me doodle with ballpoint pen and brushpen. The first sheet is one with the aforementioned warmup exercises which i learned in the mentoring section, the doodles are refless, and the brushpen is fun, yeah it is :D
302952
302955
I'm happy with the second page, I think the ballpoint girl in the top left came out good :)

And i received Bridgman's book on hands today. Awesome. Here's the first studies. I. Want. To. Learn. How. To. Draw. Hands!

Yay! Drawing is fun! Tomorrow I'll be at University again, studying for exams, which means I won't be able to practice as much as today D:

Mischeviouslittleelf, thank you, and yes, i think pushing each other is a good thing :) I'll head over to your sketchbook °O°/

So today, I overslept, then did a lot of lines, circles, and ellipses, and then some Bridgman studies.
303717
303721

Then I went to my University, studying with friends, but still doodled in the bus.
303724

Then i did some vanderpoel studies... again, not good, but I learned a lot :D
303722

And some 30 second poses before going to bed :) These suck, I somehow don't seem to have the right approach right. Everyone else seems to be doing them with lines, while i kinda try to get them down with forms... but shouldn't that actually be the right way? Maybe I just lack experience.

so today, i had to study for my exams. next one is on tuesday and things are getting kinda stressful. after that however, ill have all time in the world.

but i still did a digi doodle in between boolean algebra and all those nasty things... tried a new, more "traditional" approach to skintones here, more blocking and less blending, instead developing a richer color scheme... i think it came out rather nice. without ref, as always.

Good sketches , and studies , but i think you should try to draw from real life a little bit , to get and idea of the natural human body , because in a study from a book, is how the artist saw the model , you need to draw what your eyes see.

So really, I have to ask, how many hours a day do you typically spend sketching? and sleeping and whatever else? haha :D I don't know how you get so much art produced in a single night. Loving it all though. Also, I assume you already do this but in case it is a new tip flip your canvas often to notice the mistakes. It always helps me when I am doing 3/4 views. I think it would have helped your final drawing though the rest are pretty good I think.

LOL

Love that you're producing so much so quickly..it's something that I keep trying to improve on. Time spent drawing that is.

Anyway, I have a suggestion for you that might result in more variety with your faces. Find a subway/bus/streetcar/whatever that you can sit on and study the people that get on.

There is usually a wide demographic of people that get on and if you study them in a sculptural frame of mind, you'll get an idea of the different bone structures. That, in turn, carries over into your ref-less sketches!

Woa... I found algenpfleger :)

And hey you show more here than on Pixelbrush :)
I like your work and I see you have the same book about hands like me (Bridgman) *g*

I hope my way to CA will help me sketching more....or better showing my sketches :)

Replies, fuck yeah! :D

XSsithi, err, I dunno... a couple of hours? Well I got holidays right now, so i can kinda invest a good amount of time :) And thanks for the crits. Yeah I know, flipping helps, must have missed it. need to practice more, obviously :D

Reject-D, thank you!

Frozenbears, what the fuck does that mean xD Thanks, I guess :D

Ian Mack, thanks. Well I'm kinda motivated at the moment. And public sketching seems like a great idea. Damn, I rarely get outside these days, semester holidays you know. But i will do this as soon and often as possible!

mentler, thank you man. This means so much to me.

Ethion, cheers :D Yeah, I don't show all the studies and pencil things on pixelbrush. Too lazy to upload them twice :D

sjuskadur, thanks! Yeah, you're totally right about the rendering. I totally lack experience, I will definitely do practice this.

So today, I didn't really get much done. Was helping out my dad and had some rehearsal with a band and yeah.
But I did a few eye studies.
312227
312233
312235
312236

And a self portrait, with a mirror, 1 hour 15 minutes.
312237

And some Bridgman.
312238

And a refless, fake-looking goth chick.
312239

I also made a bet with Maidith that I'd be able to achieve LL (Linda Level) within two years from now. She'll buy me ice cream then, haha. Awesome.

Great sketchbook, and many different drawings!
I like your self portrait! 1 hour and 15 minutes, it's a very nice result for such a short time! I work too slowly! :)
Keep it up!

Great Hand Jobs.

Seriously though man. Excellent stuff. Where do you get the time and energy to produce so much? What is your secret please share! And as r-idz said the freckles are a nice touch that a lot of people don't seem to incorporate a lot, they were one of the first things i noticed when i looked through your sketchbook.

Damn you are working hard in that digital painting domain, im just so jealous... Those latest portrait heads shows a real improvement. I just tried it and i can say i have a lot still to go, but that waht the practise is there for, eh?

Thanks for dropping by, much appreciated :)

I wish I'd seen your sb earlier, this is fantastic stuff! Your portrait studies are amazing and inspiring, I actually snatched several in my inspiration folder, if you don't mind :) I really like the loose and sometimes chaotic feel in your paintings, they all have such atmosphere and personality to them. I'd still like some more finished paintings, because I know you can do it! :)

Do you mind me asking what brushes you use? Are these custom or the regular ones in PS? I'm still figuring that basic stuff out, I'm such a newbie when it comes to PS painting, good old pencils are still my favourite medium.

Anyway, I'm going to give you 5 magic stars for this beauty and I will be watching! :D

So many replies ohmygodohmygod! :D

Clochette, thanks :) Err, about drawing speed, I think Bobby Chiu said it's the ability to put down much information with few strokes. Something I definitely need to improve D:

r-idz, thanks! Aaaayyye I love freckles. I think I overdo it sometimes :D

Reject-D, haha, cheers man :D Yeah, I'll keep an eye on you.

Frozenbears, drop that joke already xDD Thanks man. About the motivation. Hey. it's no secret. I just listened to Bobby Chiu's podcast... and it totally hit me. Makes me believe in myself and work so hard. And once you see it pays off, you work even harder. Check it out people, it's pure love what this man gives the world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJowNFmuul8

Nettle_Mountain, thanks mate! Yeah, I wanna get really good. Like, really, really good. Means I have to practice a lot :D

AsaB, hey thank you :) What, inspiration folder, me? You must be kidding. Thank you. This means so much to me.
Umm, Brushes. Well I don't have Photoshop, don't really have the money, don't have Painter either for the same reason, so what I use is SAI, a japanese tool which is still in development. Actually, I don't feel I'll ever want something else. SAI is so awesome, even though it's still in alpha stadium. It's just beautiful, the brushes are so smooth, it's easy to use and to customize and... well I love it. I think you can get an english translation of the trial version here: Link (http://detstwo.com/pub/saia5-eng/)
And I once did a tutorial on how to use the program: Tutorial (http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/art/SAI-Tutorial-67196095)
Thanks again :)

Hive_minD, thanks man! Don't really have ref links I'm afraid, I just browse the internet, like flickr, deviantart, there's tons of bodyparts there. Gotta be grateful to the emo kids with their myspace pics I guess :D

So today! I did a few more of the aforementioned studies.
312935
312936
312937
312938
312939
312940
312941
312942

And some Bridgman.
312943
312948

Then, digital doodling. Wanted to try out new things today with skintones. So here's one where I wanted to have my mids more low key like Marta Dahlig says, but I failed and it's oversaturated and weird.
312957

Next one... here I tried some "ugly" colors, you see my palette in the corner there. Linda bergkvist seems to be working with such colors, but I can't seem to figure it out yet. Damn, I wanna learn how to paint skin like her.
312958

And a little junk.

I like how you include simple things like freckles in your paintings of women, they really give them a bit more originality and realism. You paint some extremely expressive eyes, I love the studies.

You can completely disregard this, but it may be healthy to try to expand your area of focus from what you do so well, like lips and eyes, and work on other aspects of your portraits, refining them and strengthening your skills there. No matter what you do, your work so far is pretty stellar.

eyes and lips.

so awesome i broke my jealousy bone.

the yellow woman is a bit odd, though. seems as though she's emitting light instead of reflecting it.

i would try a multiply layer(in photoshop) to see how the shadows work best before painting it for real(in not photoshop).

February 27th, 2008, 06:15 PM
Beautiful update! :D Your lip studies are wonderful and juicy, I see such improvements. I agree with Flaskpost, what is your secret? :D (I think I know it though, sleep-deprivation and practice, yes? ;)) But joking aside, this is amazing.

Ah, you don't use Photoshop? Sorry, shouldn't jump to conclusions like that! But alright, thanks for the info and tutorial, I'll check it out :)

Yay!

atlantik, thanks man! But leave me my brain just a little longer, the more will you benefit from stealing it later :D And what's with that double post man, I'm trying to concentrate here xD

sketcheth, thank you, and wow, everyone seems to love the freckles, now I feel bad as i don't have any today.
And hey, your critique is highly appreciated, and actually you are right. the thing is, what I'm focusing on right now is skintones, so I guess my stuff's a little boring right now. I shall do more figure studies to spice it up a little, you're totally right.

Flaskpost, wow, have I? :D Thanks! No secret, just practice and Bobby's podcast.
About the brushstrokes, umm, I don't think my strokes are economic, but I try to make them follow the form so maybe that creates a little effect... well maybe not :)

GiantRibot, oh I'm sorry! I had my jealousy bone removed a while ago so I can enjoy art without hurting all the time :D Thanks for the nice words man.
And yeah that yellow girl looks kinda ... not so well. Um, my software does have layers, but I rarely use em, cause if I don't like something I can always paint over it again, feels more natural to me.

AsaB, thanks my dear :D And you're dead on with the secret. I even overslept today because I was up so long yesterday D: And yeah, Photoshop is way too expensive for me, and apart from that, why should I use photo editing software for painting? Just because veryone else does it? :D

atlantik again, thanks, alright, alright, here's your update :D

Today's stuff is ugly! I was sick, had headache, overslept, and on top of that I tried new things with color schemes! But please bear with me, I think I'm about to figure out how to get skintones working the way I want em to.
313697
313700
313705

Some Bridgman.
313706

And some quick and dirty studies. I fell in love with the first photo, I believe it was the first time I saw a photo with good colors. So I kinda went and studied them, but my study looks not like the real one :(

Hey, you've got a point about PS, it's sometimes a bit odd that program directed at photo editing is used much more as a painting tool. That's why I've often thought of giving Painter (and now Sai!) a better look, the entire program is with painting in mind :) (Oh, and I can't quite say that I paid for Photoshop...:()

Your last update is gorgeous. My favourite is the upside-down one with the good colours. Your sense of colour is, btw, getting better with each update! I envy your dedication, but I guess there's not much else to do but kick my butt and practice :)

Ooh, one more question, if I may? Do you have any tutorials or links to digi painting, something that was maybe useful for you when first starting out? I've got so little experience in it (I'm more of a pencil fan), so it can be very frustrating :(

Peter Berkovski

AsaB, haha yeah, and what's more, all the functions you use for painting are found in other programs as well.
And thank you :) Posted a bunch of tutorial links in your sketchbook thread... guess I'll post em in here as well:
Linda Bergkvist's tutorials (http://www.furiae.com/index.php?view=gallery) | ImagineFX workshops (http://imaginefx.com/02287754330326480692/workshops.html) | Itchstudios (http://itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm) | CGtalk thread with lotsa stuff (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=166&t=226083)
Those all helped me a lot.

atlantik, thanks man! Old people, huh? Did one today, maybe more coming up.

mentler, you have no idea how much this means to me. Your nice words really got me up on my feet again when I was about to lose faith in myself. Thank you so much. And I agree about the productivity, I will try to work even harder.

So, today. Some photo studies! Always fun.

I'm really really impressed by your massive production! How many colored sketches you make in one single day? Are you a machine or something? You never sleep or what?
Seriously, regarding your work, quantity rhymes with quality, so I'm pretty jealous! I feel like a turtle, and you are a speedy jack-rabbit! Anyway, it's not a contest, but your ability to produce more and more is awesome, and have a great consequence : you are improving your art every day!
Just a little crit for the next to last portrait : I think it will be more efficient if you work on some strong edges, for the face strong lines like forehead, arch of the eyebrows, jaws or chin, what are really hard curves of the face. She's a woman, I know, not a GI joe, but it seems a little bit too limp. Maybe some stronger contrast on those transition zones between two different surfaces (neck to jaw for example, or forehead to eye cavity) would make it much better? On her nose it's pretty well rendered, but less on other parts of her face.
The last one is in a very good direction!
Keep it up! And I'm waiting for you for that jam! :)

Sweet colour stuff.
#152 is my favorite in recent post here, though the latest one is awesome as well. I think that's because of the problem whick Clochette has pointed out. So just an additional aspect I would like to mention is the second light source. Though it depends on personal decision, naturally light doesn't come in only one direction. By indicating the reflection of second light in dark side, the edge will come out by itself. Hope this will be helpful:P.

Thank you so much for the sweet words, and for the critique. You are totally right about the facial features. I just begin to notice that I need to work on that part much harder. I wanna paint beautiful stuff after all! :D
And yeah we toally need to get down to that session. By the way, what will you play, or will you sing?

Flaskpost, wow good to hear! thank you!

AsaB, no actually it took me twelve years to do all this stuff and now I'm posting it in just a few days to make it seem like i was devoted :'D Just kidding, thanks a bunch!

UnSharpened, thanks dude! And you're right about the critique... arggh I need to work harder. Can't even show my face anymore after todays update D:

these are beautiful dude, the extreme close ups of the eyes and things are my favourite, they look real but the less focused areas applied with larger "strokes" help in providing focus points to the sharper more detailed areas. the effect is really powerful and down right cool i think.

It is really fun watching your sketchbook I gotta say. It is almost a for sure thing that every day you come back to look at it there will be new stuff. I really like how you are laying down the colors for skin tones and the background contrast. Have you done any painting of hands or feet? there are a lot of skin tone changes on them and it might help your eye for color if you have to deal with some different planes and highlights/shadows.

What kind of oldies, those which are simply what was cool before we were cool, or those which are really really old? And i know a bassist! Actually I spent most of today with him, that's why I didn't get anything done. But i think he might start to draw! And he'd be totally in for that jam session! I'm excited :D

Frozenbears, thanks mate!

Gerbil Fetus, thank you so much man!

~Faust~, haha i hope so :]

XSsithi, thank you :) And actually I must admit that to this point i haven't done much studies of hands and especially not feet, as i'm still in the process of studying their anatomy. But i will definitely do that, after all I'm aiming for Linda Level here, and her hands and feet are just insanely good.

AsaB, thanks my dear :)

Trashy, hey thanks, and you're dead right about my recurring faces, i will definitely concentrate harder on getting some variations in there. Until now my only variation was freckles or no freckles i guess xD

Oh my God, I feel so bad about just having such a lazy update when it's the first post on the new page, people will think bad of me. But after feeling like shit for two days in a row, I decided I had to do some anti-artblock-therapy and just doodled a bit.

Today was strange. I did two studies:
319289
319290

And two doodles. I don't even want to show these. On the first one I was playing around with one of Melanie Delon's color schemes:
319291
319292

Then I realized that my way of painting doesn't work. I spent the rest of the day looking at other peoples', especially Linda's, art. I need to rethink my whole approach, my choice of colors, my use of layers, my blending, everything. Guess this is gonna take me a while.

Autumnal Dream, danke für die netten Worte Mann! °O°/ Genau sowas gibt mir die Motivation weiterzumachen :)

Quinn Simoes, thank you!

ilmenhin, so nice, thanks!

ohomoho, haha no actually I'm just lying on my bed and eating all sorts of stuff, I trained my cat to draw :'D Man, thanks for the nice words. And yeah, I'll guess I'll write how much time each piece takes, it's the sort of thing that I always want to know when I look at other people's stuff :D

GusTheRobot, thanks a bunch! Well about the ref materials, the aforementioned emo kids which are easily found on the net take tons of pictures of themselves, so you get to see a lot of eyes and lips there, about the nude figures, on deviantArt there's a lot of them, just gotta browse a little and look away from time to time because there's also a lot of weird stuff D:

Fishspawn, thank you! And I know my work is a little boring right now, I'm focussing really hard on improving my colors right now so maybe that's why not much else happens. But you know, once I got the skills I'm looking for I'll have all time in the world to create interesting art, so please bear with me until then :)

Joce, thanks!

So I've been kinda not updating, the reason was that i did only theoretic stuff and spent a lot of time studying other people's artwork. I also practiced mixing and blending of colors which of course is extremely boring to look at so that's why I don't post it.

But here's something that i kinda like, skintone practice with joints and folds. I really need to work on that part, seeing how good Linda is with that stuff.
Those took about 1-2 hours each, the color scheme on the second one is stolen from Linda's IFX tutorial, and I learned a lot about her color choices from just, well, using these :D No references used.

Those arms are crazy and surreal, man! I could almost imagine you doing a whole series of those. I think seeing something like that one somebody's wall would freak me out. :)

Keep on painting! Also, watch the eyes on some of your practices, their size relative to each other feels a little off.

Didi you mix your colour in Painter or Photoshop? The first one I personal think that really got the essence of how skin tones perform with environment.

Keep it up!

dude, your sketchbook is a kick in the butt everytime I see it. Huge output and improvement is showing so quickly. you skintones and faces are getting better and better.
love the last studies, they're kinda creepy but so cool. sorry that I can't give you any helpful advice. I just think you could do some more studies from life don't see too many of them in here. they are helping tons.
I'm off to draw now.

Replies, replies! :D

Sapphire, thanks! And they are not only fun to paint, but also a great way to practice lighting, perspective, anatomy and especially skintones. Gonna do a lot more of these. You're right about the eyes. Need to practice that stuff more.

UnSharpened, cheers mate! Err, neither nor. I use SAI. Don't have the money for PS or Painter. And I wouldn't trade SAI anyway.

Amir the night wolf, thank you :)

monotony, thanks a bunch! Great to hear. Yeah I guess I should draw more from life. But there's no course anywhere around here, so that sucks :( But as soon as holidays are over I'll be sketching on the bus and during lectures again :)

mellowpurple, thanks my dear! Umm yeah, a lot of this stuff doesn't get posted anywhere else. Too lazy to upload it twice :D

~Faust~, haha, if something like talent exists, then I guess i have none. But you're right, I got a plan! Goes like this: Practice, look at other people's art to see how they do it, practice, practice, practice.

Gloominati, yeah there's actually a lot of Germans here, but I prefer talking english because when someone else talks in a language I don't understand I always feel like left out :D
Thanks dude, great to hear! And you're right about that comfort zone, I really need to break out of those patterns I always use. Need to do more studies, so much stuff to practice :O

So today! Did more of those arms. Skinfolds! They're so much fun. 1 hour on this one, no ref.
321418

A photostudy from greyscale ref, so the colors are mine. This was fun, because it made me able to practice anatomy and skintones at the same time! :D About 1 hour.
321421

More arms. Two lightsources in here, kinda difficult :O Like 1 hour 20 minutes, no ref.
321422

And some Bridgman studies. Damn, my pencil skills are like... not so good.
321423
321424

I also did some poses but the file got corrupted ;_;

Farin, thanks, good to hear :)

Err, today wasn't quite my best day ever...
Some blending... do this as warmup exercise... boring to look at, but I thought I'd just upload it :P
322138

Another arm... tying to get that studio kind of lighting, guess I failed pretty hard lol. No ref, about 70 minutes?
322139

Figure study from a greyscale photograph... about 55 minutes, didn't really enjoy it as my palette wasn't working and it looked flat...
322143

Some scribbles...
322144

And an arm I lost interest in after 50 minutes or so... I need to stay concentrated, I waste too much time on the internet.
322149

Some half-assed Bridgman.
322151

Damn, my attitude crumbles. Kick my butt people, I need it badly D:

Id like to see some more men in your work like those old grumpy men who look like they`ve been true all the bad stuff in life . That is because you have a very smooth and gentle style and it looks great on ladys .But i think it would be interesting to see how would you do the men.

And those arms are amazing you realy got the right light and shades and everything.

Thank you for taking the time and looking at my sketchbook.

Digging these new skin studies. I second ohomoho. You have a very soft and bright style - something i'm trying to learn myself - but I'd like to see you switch it up and try something dark and gritty every once in a while. Keep up the hard work - massive improvement!

AsaB
March 11th, 2008, 09:05 AM
Been a while since I dropped a note! Your studies keep on improving, they absolutely do. Those neverending limbs studies of yours are such fun! But they look great as well, the lighting is especialy something I find nicely executed. Definitely improving. Those figure drawing as well, nice work.

But as has been mentioned, it probably wouldn't hurt you to expand your subjects a little :) I'd love to see you do some older men and women, or maybe children? Also fun to see people of different ethnicity and with different skin colour :)

Anyway. Keep on rocking, I'll be back soon to see your latest batch :D

atlantik, not as untired as I'd like to be haha :D Thanks mate.

Flutic, thanks!!

ohomoho, you're right! I shall bring some more variation into my work. Right now I'm sick of skintones anyway lol. Thanks for the heads up man! Or whatever that's called.

EtherRain, thank you so much man! This means a lot to me.

Krigbrann, haha guess you're right then :D Thanks!

Fishspawn, thank you! Yeah, I shall do something more... rough. I also wanna tackle this week's CHOW, so maybe that's a good opportunity.

Asa my dear, thanks :) Alright then, guess my work really needs some variation. Aaaah my stuff bores me at the moment. But i wanna be able to paint good skintones. I just don't know. I need to keep going.

so finally some reply to my dear Algenpfleger!

First of to your question, yes i am german
born in a small village in middle frankonia,
but i study interior design / interior architecture in Hildesheim (bei Hannover).
To your work: I love this arm bend thing serie, great shading and totally freaky. I searched for some finished work but didn´t find anything in the section. Try do to some, you definitely learn things you don´t do with sketches or speed paintings. Work on the skull, because your skin shading is awesome but without a good structure underneath it doesn´t work that way it could.
Yeah and maybe some boys or men here and there... but I don´t have to say that (...)

cheers

Hive_minD man, thank you!! Hey you don't like freckles or what? Kidding, thanks for the nice words man!

Quinn Simoes, thanks!

EtherRain, thanks mate :) But, no, I won't stop these yet, as i don't do them just for the folds. My main focus is still on colors, and those arms are a good way to practice that. And unfortunately I'm still far from mastering skintones :(

28chelseaslater, thank you :D Your stuff is so awesome.

lennon, thanks :)

~Faust~, sorry, didn't mean to make you jealous :P Kidding man, thanks, I totally appreciate that. Mentoring huh? Hmm sounds interesting, but i don't know much, the only thing I could teach would be digital painting and color theory :( But as that's what you're asking for, we might as well do it! Would be good for me as well, getting back over those basics and stuff. So, yeah, why not :)

Xaya, oh thanks! Hildesheim, huh? That's quite far away from where I live, too bad. Thanks for the comments and critique man, highly appreciated. You're right, I rarely do some "finished" stuff... maybe I should. I always think it would be running before I can walk.
And yeah, you're also right about face structure... I need to work harder on that part. So much to learn! Haha and boys, yeah, you're so right xD Thanks for the feedback man, means a lot to me.

Chupacabra, I'm honored!! Thank you Sir!

So today, I decided to rethink my approach to studying anatomy, Cole Eastburn has highly impressed me and yeah, he's awesome, so I decided to do those studies more from mind and memorize the content of the books. No more copying... I hope. Well, actually I had to look in my book very often for these :(
Gotta say, this approach is way more fun.
